Gubernatorial Speaker Series for CA Continues |
Over the last few months, gubernatorial candidates have been conducting a speaker series to discuss and promote their campaign platforms throughout the Inland Empire. Most recently, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom spoke at Riverside City Hall on June 30th about the projects he would undertake if voted into office. His major talking points included economic mapping, education policies, a reevaluation of our current taxes and automation issues throughout the state. Newsom spoke on carefully mapping the economics of each region in order to strategize ways to positively impact regions according to their unique needs. With his background in the public sector as a business owner, Newsom wants to work toward creating a more hospitable environment that fosters the growth of small business and entrepreneurship. As a big proponent of higher education, Newsom also discussed his ideas of creating a statewide policy that would require all incoming kindergarten students to have a designated college fund. This would change the question of high school graduates from “Will I go to college?” to “Which college will I go to?”. Lastly, Newsom realizes the concerns that automation presents to laborers statewide and wants to assure Californians that he will work to keep the mechanization of processes from ultimately replacing jobs.

The speaker series started on April 28th with Antonio Villaraigosa, the former mayor of Los Angeles. He spoke on primarily on the economic benefits of a rail system spanning from Los Angeles to Sacramento. His other platform points included high school graduation rates in LA during his time as mayor, making education more accessible to students, and upholding the gas tax throughout California.
The series was completed on July 13th with candidate John Chiang, who is currently the California State Treasurer. He spoke at Universal Technical Institute in Rancho Cucamonga and demonstrated a deep sensitivity to the Inland Empire landscape. He was familiar with key legislators, as he has a record of working closely with the community to address challenges in the region and work toward implementing sustainable solutions.

Cardenas Markets Opens Calexico Location!
|
Cardenas Markets opened a new location in Calexico this month, 175 miles away from its headquarters in Ontario. After its merger with Mi Pueblo by New York City-based global firm KKR in November 2016, Cardenas’ growth has been “significantly awesome” according to spokesman Marco Robles.
Cardenas Markets now have 31 stores that range from Ontario, Vallejo, Calexico and into Nevada. The merger with Mi Pueblo back in November was a huge advance for Cardenas, allowing them to purchase more stores and therefore being able to serve more people throughout the state.
“When you merge Mi Pueblo and Cardenas, you have a larger pool of resources, which is ultimately handed over to our customers,” said Robles.
The 52,000 square foot space in Calexico was remodeled to include a tortilleria and specially designed sections including a juice bar, deli, and meat department. Cardenas hopes to expand in San Bernardino in the future to provide quality service throughout the majority of the Inland Empire.

LA Times:
University of La Verne, "Small litte known colleges may be more affordable than you think"
|
|
Our very own University of La Verne was featured in the LA Times in the July 5, 2017 issue. The article, written by Rosanna Xia talks about the success of the small private university when it comes to graduation rates and careers of La Verne alumni. Xia highlighted the unexpected affordability of the school in comparison to other California State Universities and private colleges.
"As enrollment continues to outpace capacity at public universities and the nation grapples with rising student debt and how to ensure equitable access to college, educators point to small, little- known private schools like La Verne, Whittier College and the University of Redlands that have found ways to make their offerings affordable and to support their surrounding communities while keeping pace with the state’s changing demographics.
At La Verne, 96% of its undergraduates receive grants from the school. Nearly half (49%) qualify for Pel Grants, federal financial aid for low-income students. The school spends more than a quarter of its operating budget — about $47 million each year — on student financial support, finding savings elsewhere to do so."
The small class sizes, administrator involvement, and opportunity for grants and scholarships at La Verne makes the university accessible to families of any economic status and keeps the balance of a widespread demograpahic on campus.
