National Nutrition Month Highlights Programs Feeding the Inland Empire
March is National Nutrition Month and programs like Feeding America are doing their part to promote healthy eating habits and alleviate hunger for residents throughout the Inland Empire.
Feeding America Riverside | San Bernardino (FARSB) began in 1980 as a response to the increasing hunger and food waste throughout the Inland Empire. Currently they are the primary source of food for over 600 charities and non-profit organizations. They deliver over 2.5 million pounds of food monthly to school programs, food pantries, charities, half-way homes and senior programs. FARSB serves a total of nine elementary schools through the Kids Produce Market Program; two in San Bernardino county and seven in Riverside county. The Kids Produce Market is open for all students to receive between 10-15 pounds of fresh produce for free. In total, FARSB provides 90,000 pounds of fresh produce to over 7,400 low-income students each month. All participating schools are over a rate of 90% of students eligible for free and reduced lunch.
FARSB will be hosting a Benefit Concert on March 18th with performances by Norco Music Student Artists and Alumni. The cost of admission is $5 and all proceeds go to FARSB.

A Memo From Lewis-San Antonio Healthy Communities:
"Since March is National Nutrition Month, It’s a perfect time to take a look at what we eat or better yet, what we are not eating. We don’t need drastic changes, but we can all start somewhere. For example, drink more water, skip the drive through, and make more meals at home. If we tried to make small changes over a week, we would impact our health in a positive way! Small changes can help lower your health risks and helps set positive examples for your children. There are plenty of resources to help you work towards a healthier lifestyle.
· Choose My Plate illustrates the five food groups that are building blocks for a healthy diet using your dinner plate.
· Eat Right provides lots of healthy tips, handouts, and recipes!
The Lewis-San Antonio Healthy Communities Institute continues to partner with Upland Unified School District in educating high schoolers and middle schoolers about healthy eating and active lifestyles. This year, over 160 students learned about making good choices as part of staying healthy making them less likely to develop chronic illnesses later in life. Our local students are learning how to lower health risks before they begin, how to stay active, and make a change that makes Upland a healthier place to live."
