The IEHLC recently presented their 2nd Annual Latino Health Summit on May 19th, 2017. In partnership with San Antonio Regional Hospital, the IEHLC shed light on current epidemics of chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes, cancer and mental health issues. Too many members of our communities fall victim to these, with a lamentable aspect of the fact that many are preventable. The IEHLC believes that through education on prevention and awareness, a change toward a better healthier future, can be achieved!
Approximately 60 executive healthcare and municipalities professionals, as well as a handful of business owners, gathered to hear the inspiring and proactive words of leaders dedicated to promoting widespread education on current healthcare topics. Premier's own Yvette Walker proudly serves as Director of Programs for the IEHLC and was honored to be able to coordinate this years speaker series. Summit speakers included: Dr. Brad Gilbert, CEO of Inland Empire Health Plan, Alexander Fajardo, Executive Director of El Sol, Jaime Alvarez, author of "Cardiac Awareness", Henrietta Williams, Executive Director of The Convergence and David Batista, VP of Strategic Development at San Antonio Regional Hospital.
Upcoming Events:
The 10th Annual IEHLC Awards Gala will be held in October of 2017. Community leaders in the Inland Empire are honored and recogized for their dedication and hard work at this amazing event!

Upland Voters Endorse Measure E, Prohibiting Commercialization of Marijuana |
Upland voters made their voices clear on Tuesday by voting to endorse Measure E by a majority of 73.40% as of election night (accounting for nearly 30% of Upland voters). This measure is a local ordinace that gives the city the authority to prohibit most marijuana-related uses and activity. The ban prohibits the commercial cultivation, dispensing, unlicensed transporting, distribution, manufacturing, processing, labeling and testing of marijuana products. As per state law, Measure E does not apply to patients who own legally issued medical marijuana cards.
Upland's vote on Tuesday night supports their previous defeat of Measure U and Propostion 64 in November of 2016 which would have allowed for three medical marijuana dispenseries in Upland.
"The intent is not to deprive medical marijuana or interfere with personal use, as allowed by the state. It's to deal with the commercialization of marijuana," said Councilman Sid Robinson.

Hundreds Attend Housing Policy Conference
Regional builders as well as county and municpal representatives attended the 2017 Baldy View Chapter Housing Conference. This event focused on the shortage of new housing in our area, the lowest levels of home owenership since the 1940's and ever increasing housing costs. These have led San Bernardino County to have some of the worst residential overcrowding rates in California. Elected leaders and housing policy experts discussed the current annual housing shortage of 100,000 units and the estimated shortage of 65,000 units by 2019 according to the most recent California Housing and Community Development study.
"The status quo is simply unacceptable when we consider that San Bernardino County needs 78,983 more affordable units to meet its shortfall - up by 15,000 from 2015,” said BIA CEO Carlos Rodriguez.“We have a moral obligation to address the growing workforce housing demand in our region and our conference will outline policy solutions for our elected leaders to consider."
This conference sought to explore federal, state and local housing policy priorities and how they affect our region. Speakers included Ben Metcalf, keynote speaker and Director of California Department of Housing and Community Development, Congressman Pete Aguilar and Congresswoman Norma Torres, as well as Randall Lewis of Lewis Mangagement Corps, Lennar Homes, Homes by Towne, Cal Atlantic Homes, Bira Energy, EPRI and Southern Califonia Edison.
Presentations from this year's conference and news about the all things related to housing in the Inland Empire can be found at www.biabuild.com. |
