PWN wenst iedereen een fijne kerstperiode!
|
De rondreizende tentoonstelling ‘’Imaginary’’ is inmiddels te zien geweest in Leiden, Nijmegen, Utrecht en Enschede, waarmee we op de helft zijn van de rondreis. Vanaf 13 februari zal ‘’Imaginary’’ te zien zijn op de TU Eindhoven, in het hoofdgebouw ‘’Atlas’’. Daarna vervolgt de rondreis nog naar Groningen, Amsterdam en Maastricht. De tentoonstelling is zeer succesvol, trekt veel schoolklassen en publiek, en er is een parallel lezingenprogramma voor het algemene publiek. Ook in Vlaanderen is er veel belangstelling voor de tentoonstelling, waar de tentoonstelling momenteel nog te zien is in Diepenbeek en vanaf januari in Leuven.
Voor de tentoonstelling is een prachtige catalogus uitgegeven, welke men ook via bureau@platformwiskunde.nl kan bestellen (5 Euro plus verzendkosten).

Math4NL Community Event en scriptieprijzen
|
Op 4 november werd in het fraaie gebouw ‘’De Inktpot’’, met als gastheer ProRail, het Math4NL Community Event 2022 gehouden, met als onderwerp ‘’Digital Twins’’. Hoofdspreker was Dirk Hartmann van Siemens, daarna volgden korte pitches van een viertal bedrijven met aansluitend een discussie. De opkomst was groot, meer dan 60 deelnemers, en de discussies waren levendig. Ook uitten diverse bedrijven interesse in een vertaalsessie met Math4NL.

Ons doel met de artikelen, blogs, animaties en video’s, is om wiskundige en algoritmische aspecten van de theorie van netwerken aan een breder publiek te presenteren, en om te laten zien hoe fascinerend dit moderne wetenschappelijke veld is. Kortom, we zijn erg enthousiast over NetworkPages en we hopen dat u ons de komende tijd vaak zult komen bezoeken!

Kamervragen sectorplannen
|
Nog dit jaar zal minister Dijkgraaf zestig miljoen euro toekennen aan de sectorplannen van de sociale en geesteswetenschappen en de medische, technische en bètawetenschappen. Die laatste twee krijgen echter te weinig en de eerste te veel, vindt Hatte van der Woude van de VVD. Het Kamerlid wil weten hoe men tot de verdeling kwam en welke rol minister Dijkgraaf daarin speelde.

Wiskundestudent Lars Pos wint Robbert Dijkgraaf Essayprijs
|
Met zijn essay ‘Waarom wetenschap?’ won wiskundewonder Lars Pos (18) de Robbert Dijkgraaf Essayprijs. Onder het thema ‘De fascinerende werking van wetenschap’ schreef de bachelorstudent een pleidooi voor het maatschappelijk nut van fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek. ‘Omdat je van tevoren niet weet waar we het in de toekomst kunnen toepassen, moeten we het blijven doen.’

Stairway to Impact award voor Wil Schilders
|
Het NWO-domein Exacte en Natuurwetenschappen wil kennisbenutting stimuleren. Met de Stairway to Impact Award beloont NWO wetenschappers die effectief stappen ondernemen om hun wetenschappelijke resultaten in te zetten voor een maatschappelijk probleem en/of een economische bijdrage. De trap van fundamenteel onderzoek met laag TRL-niveau naar maatschappelijke impact kent vele treden. Het bereiken van de verschillende treden is cruciaal om uiteindelijk tot het einddoel te komen. De Stairway to Impact Award wordt uitgereikt aan innovatieve onderzoekers die hierin grote, onvoorziene of anderszins belangrijke stappen nemen. Deze stappen laten ook al impact zien, al hoeft het einddoel nog niet bereikt te zijn. Dit wordt bijvoorbeeld zichtbaar met een succesvolle startup of door resultaten te implementeren via een maatschappelijke organisatie.

Vacature directeur Math4NL
|
Math4NL is een initiatief van de commissie Innovatie van Platform Wiskunde Nederland en wil door vruchtbare interactie tussen wiskundig onderzoekers en het bedrijfsleven en maatschappelijke organisaties de Nederlandse innovatiekracht stimuleren. Naast het te vormen bestuur heeft men ook een vacature uitgezet voor een meewerkend directeur.

Op 5 november vond de jaardag plaats van de Nederlandse Vereniging van Wiskundeleraren. Altijd een levendige gebeurtenis, startend met de jaarvergadering van de NVvW met de jaarrede van de voorzitter, Ebrina Smallegange, en een presentatie van de penningmeester. Daarna volgden vele workshops, met een variëteit aan thema’s, waarvoor men zich tevoren diende aan te melden.
Er staat ook altijd een groot aantal stands van allerlei organisaties, zodat men in de pauzes kennis kan nemen van de laatste ontwikkelingen m.b.t. leerboeken voor het wiskundeonderwijs, verschillende onderwijsmethodes, de nieuwste boeken van Epsilon, spelletjes en andere uitgaven van de Stichting Kangoeroe en nog veel meer.

Outreach fonds van het Sectorplan
|
In het verlengde van het Sectorplan Beta & Techniek (2019) is er jaarlijks geld beschikbaar voor outreach activiteiten. De bètadecanen van de Nederlandse universiteiten stellen gezamenlijk geld beschikbaar voor landelijke outreach- en voorlichtingsprojecten. Het totaalbedrag van de beschikbare subsidie is €700.000,- euro per jaar. Projecten op het gebied van natuurkunde, scheikunde, wiskunde, informatica of domeinoverstijgend (STEM) kunnen een aanvraag indienen. Het is hierbij belangrijk dat het project aan tenminste één Nederlandse universiteit verbonden is. De aanvraag kan worden gedaan voor één, twee of drie kalenderjaren. De maximale bijdrage aan een project is €40.000,- per jaar. Bij een toekenning voor drie jaar is de maximale bijdrage dus €120.000,-.
In de afgelopen jaren is wiskunde succesvol geweest met aanvragen (oa. voor de EGMO wiskunde-olympiade voor meisjes, voor Pythagoras, voor Mathness, Succesformules in beeld en Imaginary). Een nieuwe call zal in het voorjaar 2023 verschijnen, met een deadline voor indiening rond 1 mei 2023. Indien u ideeën heeft of eens wilt spreken met succesvolle indieners, dan graag contact opnemen met bureau@platformwiskunde.nl.

De laatste OPSF Summer School vóór de Covid19 pandemie was in 2018 in Tunesië, en de eerste post-covid OPSF Summer School werd 8-12 augustus, 2022 gehouden aan de Radboud Universiteit, Nijmegen, Nederland, na twee keer te zijn uitgesteld vanwege de pandemie. Op de zomerschool waren er vijf reeksen lezingen over verschillende onderwerpen:
- Numerieke analyse en orthogonale veeltermen, Daan Huybrechs (KU Leuven, België),
- Matrix gewaardeerde orthogonale veeltermen, Pablo Rom´an (Universidad Nacional de C´ordoba, Argentinië),
- Hypergeometrische functies van verscheidene variabelen en harmonische analyse, Margit Rösler (Universit¨at Paderborn, Duitsland),
- Orthogonale polynomen en kwantuminformatie/rekenen, Rafael Nepomechie (Universiteit van Miami, VS),
- Getaltheorie en speciale functies: modulaire functies, Wadim Zudilin (Radboud Universiteit, Nederland).
De docenten gaven elk 5 uur lezingen en er was een levendige interactie met de deelnemers. Naast deze lezingen waren er oefenlessen en enkele lezingen van deelnemers. De OPSF Summer School werd georganiseerd als onderdeel van het Radboud Summer School programma door Erik Koelink en Walter Van Assche.

SIAM 2023 conferentie over Computational Science and Engineering
|
Van 26 februari tot 3 maart 2023 organiseren de TU Eindhoven en de Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM, VS) de 2023-conferentie over Computational Science and Engineering in het RAI Congrescentrum, Amsterdam. Het is de eerste keer dat deze conferentie buiten de VS wordt georganiseerd. Het wordt een record met 420 minisymposia, meer dan 200 bijdragen en een verwacht aantal deelnemers van meer dan 2200. De inschrijving is nu geopend.
Voorafgaand aan de conferentie wordt een hackathon gehouden met uitdagingen van 6 grote bedrijven, waaronder Siemens en ASML. Woensdagavond 1 maart wordt een openbare avond gehouden met 6 TED-achtige voordrachten over het belang van wiskunde voor de industrie en de samenleving:
- Karen Willcox, "Digital Twins: De gepersonaliseerde toekomst van computers voor complexe systemen".
- Magnus Fontes (algemeen directeur Institut Roche), ''In Control of Life''.
- Kate Evans, ''Wiskunde: de geheime sleutel tot oplossingen voor klimaatverandering''.
- Luke Bennetts, ''Wiskundige uitdagingen in het hart van een van de longen van de aarde''.
- Caoimhe Rooney, "Wiskunde: van smoothies tot de sterren".
- Bert Zwart, "Het slimme netwerk van de toekomst ontwerpen".
Alexander Rinnooy Kan sluit het officiële gedeelte van de bijeenkomst af; daarna kan het publiek zich onder het genot van een drankje mengen onder de deelnemers aan de conferentie voor verdere discussies.

PWN wishes everyone a merry Christmas season!

The touring exhibition ''Imaginary'' has now been shown in Leiden, Nijmegen, Utrecht and Enschede, bringing us to the halfway point of the tour. From 13 February, ''Imaginary'' will be on show at TU Eindhoven, in the main building ''Atlas''. After that, the tour will continue to Groningen, Amsterdam and Maastricht. The exhibition has been very successful, attracting many school classes and audiences, and there is a parallel lecture programme for the general public. There is also a lot of interest in Flanders, where the exhibition is currently still on show in Diepenbeek and from January in Leuven.
A beautiful catalogue has been published for the exhibition, which can also be ordered at bureau@platformwiskunde.nl (5 Euro plus postage).

Math4NL Community Event and thesis awards
|
On 4 November, the Math4NL Community Event 2022 was held in the beautiful building ''The Inkpot'', hosted by ProRail, with the topic ''Digital Twins''. The keynote speaker was Dirk Hartmann of Siemens, followed by short pitches from about four companies, followed by a discussion. The turnout was large, more than 60 participants, and the discussions were lively. Several companies also expressed interest in a translation session with Math4NL.

Our goal with the articles, blogs, animations and videos, is to present mathematical and algorithmic aspects of the theory of networks to a wider audience, and to show how fascinating this modern scientific field is. In short, we are very excited about NetworkPages, and we hope you will visit us often in the near future!

Mathematics student Lars Pos wins Robbert Dijkgraaf Essay Prize
|
With his essay 'Why science?', mathematics prodigy Lars Pos (18) won the Robbert Dijkgraaf Essay Prize. Under the theme 'The fascinating workings of science', the undergraduate wrote a plea for the social utility of basic scientific research. 'Because you don't know in advance where we can apply it in the future, we have to keep doing it.'

Stairway to Impact award for Wil Schilders |
The NWO domain of Exact and Natural Sciences wants to encourage knowledge utilisation. With the Stairway to Impact Award, NWO rewards scientists who take effective steps to use their scientific results for a societal problem and/or an economic contribution. The stairway from basic research with low TRL level to societal impact has many steps. Reaching the different steps is crucial to ultimately reach the final goal. The Stairway to Impact Award is presented to innovative researchers who take major, unforeseen or otherwise important steps in this. These steps also already show impact, although the final goal need not yet be reached. This becomes visible, for example, with a successful startup or by implementing results through a social organisation.

Outreach fund of the Sector Plan
|
As an extension of the Beta & Engineering Sector Plan (2019), money is available annually for outreach activities. The beta deans of Dutch universities jointly make funds available for national outreach and education projects. The total amount of the available grant is €700,000 per year. Projects in the field of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science or cross-domain (STEM) can apply. It is important that the project is linked to at least one Dutch university. The application can be made for one, two or three calendar years. The maximum contribution to a project is €40,000 per year. In the case of an award for three years, the maximum contribution is thus €120,000.
In recent years, mathematics has been successful with applications (including for the EGMO mathematics-olympiad for girls, for Pythagoras, for Mathness, 'Succesformules in beeld' and Imaginary). A new call will appear in spring 2023, with a deadline for submission around 1 May 2023. If you have any ideas or would like to speak to successful submitters, please contact bureau@platformwiskunde.nl.

The last OPSF Summer School before the Covid19 pandemic was in 2018 in Tunisia, and the first post-covid OPSF Summer School was held August 8–12, 2022 at Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands, after being postponed twice because of the pandemic. At the summer school there were five series of lectures on various topics:
- Numerical analysis and orthogonal polynomials, Daan Huybrechs (KU Leuven, Belgium),
- Matrix valued orthogonal polynomials, Pablo Rom´an (Universidad Nacional de C´ordoba, Argentina),
- Hypergeometric functions of several variables and harmonic analysis, Margit Rösler (Universit¨at Paderborn, Germany),
- Orthogonal polynomials and quantum information/computing, Rafael Nepomechie (University of Miami, USA),
- Number theory and special functions: modular functions, Wadim Zudilin (Radboud Universiteit, the Netherlands).
Each of the lecturers gave 5 hours of talks and there was a lively interaction with the participants. Apart from these lectures, there were exercise classes and some lectures by participants. The OPSF Summer School was organised as part of the Radboud Summer School programme by Erik Koelink and Walter Van Assche.

SIAM 2023 conference on Computational Science and Engineering
|
From February 26 till March 3, 2023, TU Eindhoven and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM, USA) are organizing the 2023 conference on Computational Science and Engineering in the RAI Congress Centre, Amsterdam. It is the first time this conference is organized outside the USA. It will be record breaking, with 420 mini-symposia, over 200 contributed papers and an expected number of participants exceeding 2200. Registration is open now.
Prior to the conference, a hackathon will be held with challenges by 6 major companies, including Siemens and ASML. Wednesday evening, March 1, a public evening will be held, with 6 TED-style talks about the importance of mathematics for industry and society:

- Magnus Fontes (general manager Institut Roche), ‘’In Control of Life",

Alexander Rinnooy Kan will end the official part of the meeting; after that, the general public can mingle with conference participants for further discussions while enjoying a drink.
