Just.Equal Australia is concerned incitement-to-violence legislation passing through parliament is too limited to capture most of the public hate directed at LGBTIQA+ people.
Spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said,
“The Government’s proposal to prohibit incitement to violence is necessary but not sufficient to curb public hatred against LGBTIQA people.”
“At a national level the LGBTIQA+ community needs the kind of incitement-to-hatred prohibition which already operates in some states.”
“We also need the kind of ban on humiliating, intimidating and other bullying conduct that currently exists in Tasmania and in the federal Race Discrimination Act.”
“At a time of rising public hate against LGBTIQA+ people we must not settle for narrow and insufficient measures, but demand laws that will make a real difference.”
Mr Croome welcomed amendments proposed by the Greens and cross-bench members aimed at improving the Government’s bill, but said they won’t be enough to curb public expressions of hate against LGBTIQA+ Australians.
