Moving forward with gratitude and hope

As we near the end of this year, it is very encouraging to see that conferencing and events has turned the corner. There is a definite momentum in the industry, and we have been able to grow the XL Millennium team once more so as to provide fully for our clients. While there are still Covid hotspots around the globe, business is no longer a waiting game – businesses are going ahead with conferences, events, seminars and launches. We are thrilled to see that our US clients are returning to Africa for events.

Travel remains complicated. Flight cancellations, schedule changes and strikes make travel arrangements stressful. We urge you to plan carefully, and deal with a reputable company that can make alternate arrangements quickly if you encounter problems.

We close this year with gratitude and renewed hope for the next year. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our loyal clients, and we look forward to seeing you once more in the new year. We wish you and your loved ones a blessed holiday season.

Conferences abound

XL Millennium has been exceptionally busy with conferences over the past few months. From small, intimate meetings to face-to-face conferences for hundreds, we’ve planned and managed several face-to-face and hybrid conferences in the past six months.

Following a long period of online conferences, our big clients in insurance and finance have kicked off with conferences, summits and roadshows across the country.

Another of our long-standing clients, for whom we arranged online conferences during Covid, held a face-to-face conference for 150 people in Pretoria during November. The two-day conference included an Excellence Awards Ceremony at the Maslow Hotel, Time Square, Pretoria.

A Science and Technology client hosted a summer school at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. During planning, the uncertainty of Covid meant that three possible options were prepared for – a fully online conference, a physical conference, and a hybrid conference. The three-day event took the hybrid option, with face-to-face delegates and speakers, as well as some international speakers that were streamed into the physical conference.

A large association conference for 650 people was held in Kimberley, where we had to deal with not only loadshedding, but running out of water!

Local and international incentive trips

Both local and international incentive travel is flourishing once more. XL Millennium has managed incentive trips to London and Cancun, Dubai, Prague and Dubrovnik, Istanbul and Zanzibar. Local incentives have included trips to Sani Pass, Bonamanzi Game Reserve, Sun City and to firm ‘local’ favourite Mauritius.

An adrenalin-filled incentive for 100 people to Dubai included zip-lining, a visit to Ski Dubai, an experience of an Arabian tea house and a traditional Arabian meal, seated on carpets on the floor.

An interesting turn of events

Recent events XL Millennium has planned and managed have been interesting!

A glittering dinner for 30 people took place at Gold in Cape Town.

VIP cyclists were hosted by the main sponsor at the Double Century cycle race in Swellendam.

XL Millennium managed the visit of two senior executive clients to dinner with the new King of England.

Keeping up to date

XL Millennium has also been keeping itself up to date with the latest in meetings, incentives, conferences and travel. Staff members have done several site visits to Dubai, Mauritius, New York and Malta. In October, Ansu Colditz attended IMEX America, the largest trade show in the US for the global meetings, events and incentive travel industry. Ansu Colditz and Angela Beukes also attended IBTM, the leading global event for the meetings and events industry, in Barcelona in early December.

SARS travel pass

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has introduced a new travel pass which requires travellers to declare currency and goods they're carrying before boarding a flight. The South African Traveller Management System is being piloted at King Shaka International Airport and is planned to be rolled out nationally in 2023. Anyone leaving or entering South Africa will eventually be required to use this system, although it is voluntary for now.

SARS has released a short video tutorial on how to use the new system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5Igehrp8UI

MyCiTi Airport Service suspended

The City of Cape Town has suspended its MyCiTi Airport Service. Demand for the service has not recovered since the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. The city will redeploy the fleet to higher-demand routes, such as those connecting Atlantis with Table View, Century City and the Cape Town central business district.
