Inn the Spotlight - Bross Hotel - Paonia
Bross Hotel Paonia
The Bross Hotel Bed & Breakfast is located in the center of downtown Paonia, close to Delta, Colorado, you’ll find that this 115-year old hotel still offers the best lodging available in the area. All rooms have private baths and each one is furnished with comfortable bedding, antique furniture, and locally themed décor. Individual thermostats offer temperature regulation in the cooler months and in the summer swamp coolers, ceiling fans, and transom windows above the bedroom doors provide cooling. High-speed wifi internet can be accessed throughout the property. Each room at the Bross Hotel is unique, with a comfortable blend of historic charm and modern convenience.
The Bross Hotel Innkeepers Suzanne and Mike
Innkeepers Suzanne Tripp and Mike Yengling as a West Coast native with roots in the Midwest and a Virginian with roots in the Northwest, they somehow seemed destined to settle somewhere in the middle. Suzanne is a historical architect by training with a background in baking and a lifelong love of cooking.  Her keen eye for detail, generosity of spirit, and general love of all things food and hospitality is a natural fit for a B&B.  Just don’t ask her for her most prized recipes! Mike, a University of Colorado graduate and organic farmer in a previous life, shares a background in historic preservation that also lends itself to the turn-of-the-century architecture and storied history of the inn.  He brings a jack-of-all-trades mentality and is always happy to pass on local knowledge, be it a hike, bike ride, scenic attraction, or offbeat culinary find.
Paonia is a small town in the North Fork Valley on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains and is rich in attractions and activities. Known for its orchards, farms and ranches, and vineyards, Paonia is frequently referred to as Colorado’s farm-to-table capital.   Federal lands surrounding Paonia provide boundless opportunities for outdoor activities and endless possibilities for day trips. The inspiring beauty of the valley attracts artists and musicians to make their homes here. In fact, renowned sculptor Lincoln Fox lives locally and created the bronze art piece in the hotel’s entry parlor. If you’re tired of the everyday ho-hum go to work – come home – do nothing fun – this is just the thing! About 10 days prior to your murder mystery event they will send each character a dossier which provides background information on all the players, your own secrets and clues and just enough information to make you dangerous! Costume tips and description of the theme are included to make planning easy. On murder mystery stays we offer early check-in so that you have plenty of time to get settled and prepare for the The Claremont Inn & Winery Stratton COevening of high drama. Perhaps a stop at the wine tasting bar to meet up with some of the other characters will be in order. When the curtain opens and the murder mystery party begins everyone arrives in character and in costume. The fun begins with a social hour in the wine bar with delicious appetizers and lots of hijinks. An incredible dinner is had by all and then the unthinkable happens – yes – a murder! The rest of the evening is spent trying to figure “out who done it?”. With the help of the inspector and investigation by the surefooted Stratton police department a solution is surely to be found. The evening is capped off with dessert coffee and a selection of Claremont Winery port and dessert wines. Laughs abound as everyone rehashes the evening’s performances. Call the inn for more information at 719-348-5125.

Poached Pears in Pumpkin Bread Old Town GuestHouse
Poached Pears in Pumpkin Bread - Old Town GuestHouse
This simple and fun presentation of whole pears baked in quick bread is a real hit!
Six whole Bosc pears (with stems if possible).
One 14-to-15.5 oz box of quick bread mix. Pumpkin, gingerbread, or cinnamon streusel are best.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Directions: To poach pears, place pears in a saucepan and add enough water to just cover. Remove pears, add 1/2 cup granulated sugar to the pan and bring to a boil (or use leftover white wine or champagne instead of water, no sugar needed). Add the pears, reduce heat to medium, and cook at a medium-low boil for 5 minutes or just until pears just start to soften. Gently remove pears from the pan and cool slightly. Trim a bit of the bottom of each pear to create a flat base. Lightly brush some flour over the bottom 2/3 of each pear to help the batter adhere.
While the pears are cooking, line two loaf pans with foil and spray lightly with cooking spray (foil hack: flip the pan over and mold foil over it, then flip pan upright and put the mold inside…it keeps the corners from breaking).
Prepare quick bread mix according to instructions. Pour 1/2 mixture into each of the loaf pans. Gently press three of the pears into each loaf pan allowing the batter to cover the pears, tops exposed.
Bake at 350° for 50 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the bread comes out with slight crumbs clinging. Cool 10 minutes in pans on a wire rack. Remove from pans, cool completely on a wire rack. Peel back foil and slice. Serve plain or with a dusting of confectioners sugar or a drizzle of caramel sauce or whipped cream. Enjoy!
