ADVOCATES CALL ON LIBS TO "STEP UP"

Equality advocates have praised those federal Liberals who are advocating for their Party to have a free vote on marriage equality instead of a public vote, and have called on other Liberals who support marriage equality to "step up".

Just.equal spokesperson, Ivan Hinton-Teoh, said,

"I applaud those Liberals who say they will push for a free vote on marriage equality when Parliament returns next week and who want to ditch the wasteful, divisive and unnecessary public vote."

"It's time for other Liberals who support marriage equality to step up and advocate for a free vote as well."

"Polls show the Government could lose office if it fails to enact marriage equality before the next election so every marriage equality supporter in Government ranks has a stake in making sure the reform happens asap."

In May a national Galaxy Research poll found 26% of Liberal voters would consider voting for another party that will achieve marriage equality if the Government doesn't allow a free vote on the reform.

That is equivalent to 1.1 million voters.
