Dear
On January 23th the Pillar of Shame was erected in front of the Danish Parliament, in support of the democracy movement in Hong Kong.
It was a huge success, and well visited by the public, members of the parliament, as well as, Danish and international press. The erection of the Pillar of Shame and the Chinas Embassy’s attempt to stop it have sparked a debate in the Danish Parliament, and Danish and International Medias – even the New York Times covered the event- See overview of the Media Coverage here
Danish authorities have defended the erection of the Pillar of Shame, despite complaints from Chinese officials.
Officials from the Chinese Embassy in Denmark had attempted to pressure authorities into removing the statue outside the parliament in Copenhagen, warning that it would damage relations between the two countries, according to newspaper Jyllands-Posten – citing a note from the City of Copenhagen which authorized the artwork.
The note said embassy representatives phoned municipal authorities a day before the sculpture was erected saying that it mispresented the political situation in Hong Kong, adding that it would be “wise” to withdraw the sculpture’s permit. (See the note here)
A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy said in a statement the next day that the artwork sought to damage China’s reputation and hinder its development.
“The right to freedom of expression does not mean one can willfully slander and discredit another country,” they said. “The pace of the Chinese nation’s great rejuvenation is unstoppable. The conspiracy of a few people and anti-China organisation in Denmark is doomed to fail.” (See the full statement here)
As a result an open hearing was held on February 4th at the Danish parliament over allegations that Beijing had sought to censor Danish artists and art institutions in Denmark, including Copenhagen film festival, the Royal Theatre and the erection of the Pillar of Shame.
Support from Hong Kong
On facebook alone we have received more than 1000 support messages from people in Hong Kong, and also the US Ambassador to Denmark, Carla Sands, tweeted her support with photos of her in front of the Pillar of Shame. (see her tweet here)

A rose to an imprisoned women
Galschiøt is auctioning away his sculpture of a Rose and give all income to the fight for women’s right in Iran
He has named the sculpture after Yasaman, an Iranian women that fights for the women’s rights to decide for themselves how they want to dress. All the profit from the Rose goes to Amnesty International’s work for women in Iran.
It was the story about the 24 year old Yasaman Aryan that was sentence to 16 years in prison for handing out flowers in Tehran without wearing a Hijab, that made Galschiøt create this sculpture of a Rose and name it after her.

About Jens Galschiøt:
Danish artist Jens Galschiøt has created many socio-critical sculptures and installations through the years. Most often they are placed in public spaces around the world – as needle-sticks and silent reminders of a world that, in his opinion, is out of balance, and where exploitation of the world’s resources, inequality and migration are a constant part of the picture.
