When I sent my email a couple of weeks ago about upcoming events, I was terribly remiss to not include the annual gala for one of my favorite local non-profits, Hoboken’s Jubilee Center which is TOMORROW NIGHT! So am taking this opportunity to share, and to include a few more updates:
A NIGHT AT JUBILEE GALA – THURSDAY 10/10
A Dinner and silent auction to benefit the Jubilee Center of Hoboken. The gala will take place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Jubilee Center, 601 Jackson St, Hoboken. It will be a joyous event with comedy, games, a silent auction, buffet-style dinner and desert catered by top local chef, Anthony Pino (owner of Anthony David’s and Bin 14). The Jubilee Center has been a vital part of our city for 20 years; providing continuity, stability, educational support, enrichment opportunities and mentoring to our most underprivileged kids. This work makes such a difference to the their families, enabling parents to work, safe in the knowledge that their children are cared for and encouraged to make their education a priority. VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE 10/15
You have until next Tuesday to register to vote or update your registration. Check HERE to see if you need to update your registration. The Hoboken City Clerk will have late hours until 9pm this Friday, 10/11 and Tuesday 10/15. You can get forms there, online, or email me and I will bring one to you.
I can tell you that local elections are where your vote is the most impactful. During my last election in 2015 I won with 49.9% of the vote in a three way race. We didn’t have runoffs at the time, but had we then I would have been in a run off. But if just two more people voted and voted for me… I would have gotten just over the requisite 50% to avoid a runoff (had we had them). This time your vote may be the difference between me representing you in the future or not.
CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE DEBATES – 10/17 AND 10/24
Speaking of voting for me, although I know that all of you reading this are already either voting for me or telling your friends to vote for me 
, there are two scheduled candidate debates coming up for the 2nd ward:
- 2nd Ward Only Debate on the 17th at 4pm (1hr) – This is being put on by Hudson Media Group. This will be available on FACEBOOK, and ONLINE and ultimately televised on local government stations. You can post questions live during the debate. You can see the 6th ward debate that happened yesterday between 2 of the 3 candidates HERE.
- Group Debates on the 22nd and 24th at 7pm (2hrs) @ DeBaun Auditorium at Stevens – These are hosted by the Quality of Life Coalition and hosted by Bob Bowden and Hudson County View’s John Heinis. These are group debates with odd numbered wards (1,3,5) on the 22nd, and even numbered wards (2,4,6) on the 24th. You can attend these in person, submit questions and I believe they will be streamed online.
UPDATE ON OUR FRIEND JOE
First and foremost, tomorrow (the 10th!) is his birthday so if you see him at the ferry, be sure to wish him Happy Birthday. As you may or may not know, Joe is a die-hard Giants and Yankees fan. And tomorrow night is the big Giants vs Patriots matchup on Thursday night football (#gobills!). Joe has mentioned a few times that he would love to have a Giants football jersey, so after a little investigative work, we got him one with the #26 Saquon Barkley on it. If you are at all interested in contributing a little for the gift, just send me an email. I plan to give it to him tomorrow so he can wear it in the afternoon at the ferry (he won’t be there in the morning due to an appointment).
As important (if not more) is that the medical benefits issue I mentioned to you on 8/22 that I was helping him with has been sorted out – Joe had lost his Medicaid about two years ago basically due to an administrative glitch, but after a few months and meetings with some incredibly helpful people at the County and State level, I am happy to say we have gotten his Medicaid reinstated! And we now have a great resource at the County who is helping to identify other additional services that may be available for him. So hopeful more good news to come for our friend.
HOBOKEN YARDS REDEVELOPMENT PLAN COMMUNITY MEETING – 10/15
A gentle reminder about this meeting that will be at 7pm at the Multi Service Center at 124 Grand Street. The City sent out a community nixle alert after I sent my (long) email on Monday. It lacked any material information and I believe was not forthcoming when in it described the project as having reduced in scale. This is arguably the biggest project Hoboken has seen in decades and there are many questions that need to be asked, not the least of which is why can’t they accommodate NYWW at the project? I hope you can make it. Unfortunately, I do not believe it will be available online but I am confirming.
