ADVOCATES WELCOME SMITH MARRIAGE BILL PUSH / CALL FOR CONSULTATION ON EXEMPTIONS

Equality advocates have welcomed reports Senator Dean Smith will introduce marriage equality legislation, and have asked for the LGBTI community to be consulted on the details of exemptions in the draft legislation that allow discrimination.

It was revealed today that Senator Smith will introduce legislation when Parliament returns in the hope of securing a free vote on the issue. He has said the bill will contain exemptions for celebrants

Just.equal spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said

"We congratulate Senator Smith for taking the initiative on an issue that Australians overwhelmingly want to see resolved."

"We urge him to consult with the LGBTI community to ensure that any proposed exemptions do not go further than the LGBTI community would accept."

Mr Croome said groups like just.equal will now step up their lobbying to help Senator Smith achieve a free vote.
