Social cohesion envoy highlights Federal Gov't inaction on LGBTIQA+ human rights

The appointment of a social cohesion envoy has highlighted Federal Government inaction against anti-LGBTIQA+ hatred and discrimination.

Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, today announced that Labor MP, Peter Khalil, will be the envoy for social cohesion, joining newly-announced envoys against anti-Semitism and Islamophobia.

Just.Equal Australia spokesperson, Rodney Croome, said,

“The appointment of a social cohesion envoy highlights the failure of the Federal Government to promote social cohesion for LGBTIQA+ Australians.”

“The Government has failed to protect LGBTIQA+ people from discrimination in faith-based schools and services, failed to appoint an LGBTIQA human rights commissioner and failed to speak out against rising anti-LGBTIQA+ hate.”

"The Prime Minister who is currently appointing envoys for social cohesion and against anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, is the same person who, as Opposition Leader, dropped an LGBTIQA+ equality minister from Labor's platform and has never reinstated it."

“Australia will not be a socially cohesive society as long as government and the law allow anti-LGBTIQA discrimination, exclusion and prejudice to go unchallenged.”

Mr Croome said an LGBTIQA+ Human Rights Commissioner would help advocate directly to the Government and prompt it to enact overdue law reforms.
