Historic Perspective:

100 years ago, a public school education was a just a dream for most Black Texas children… The Julius Rosenwald Fund enabled the Kittrell/Wilson/Houston Family to make a difference in Huntsville and greater Walker County Texas...

WHO WAS JULIUS ROSENWALD?

Julius Rosenwald, (1862-1932)  was a Chicago businessman, philanthropist and part-owner  of Sears, Roebuck and Company whose Jewish family fled persecution in Europe.  Rosenwald  believed all Americans deserve an education.

1912:  He established the Rosenwald Fund for "the well-being of mankind” and collaborated with educator/former slave,  Booker T. Washington and his Tuskegee Institute to build over 5,300 rural school buildings for African American children across the Jim Crow south.

(02/12/1864 - 11/19/1945)

This prolific educator was the cousin of Professor  John Wesley Wilson (founder of Rosenwald Acres), nephew of Virginia Houston Wilson (founder of Friendship Baptist Church) and the son of Sam Houston's educated man-servant, Joshua Houston (Texas’ first Black County Commissioner).

After leaving Howard University (and 5 years in the Navy), Samuel returned to Huntsville TX, founded the Huntsville Times newspaper; and the Samuel W. Houston Industrial Training Institute (also Rosenwald funded)

In his lifetime, he served as the Field Secretary/Director of the Interracial Commission of Texas; was the Commissioner of Interracial Cooperation; and the County Superintendent for persons of color.  Prof. Houston eventually was assigned to be the first principal of the HISD’s (aptly named) Samuel W. Houston High School, housed in the same building as the current Museum and Cultural Center.
