Safeguarding is an essential part in the life and ministry of the Church. It is the responsibility of all of us to ensure our parishes and institutions are safe places, especially for those who are vulnerable. Abuse and harm have no place in our diocese. There is zero tolerance to abuse, harm and any behaviour that falls short of appropriate safeguarding practices as expressed in National Policies.

Pope Francis appoints Bishop Philip Moger as the new Bishop of Plymouth
His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Philip Moger as the new Bishop of Plymouth.
A priest of the Diocese of Leeds for over 40 years, Bishop Moger has, until now, served as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Southwark.
Message from Cardinal Vincent Nichols, President of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales and Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, offered his congratulations:
“I congratulate the Right Reverend Philip Moger on his appointment as the next Bishop of the Diocese of Plymouth. He will bring experience and wisdom to that diocese although his moving is a loss to the Archdiocese of Southwark.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Canon Paul Cummins who has led the diocese over the last two years. I thank him most sincerely for the contributions he has made not only to the Diocese of Plymouth but also to the working of the Bishops’ Conference of England in Wales.”

Evangelii Gaudium Sunday 2024
This year, Evangelii Gaudium Sunday will be celebrated in our parishes on 15 September 2024. It gives us the opportunity to reflect on the great mandate we have been given by the Risen Lord to evangelise the whole world. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,” the Lord commissions, as we hear in Matthew 28:19.
Inspired by our ongoing Synodal process, Scripture, and Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, we have chosen the theme ‘Growing as missionary disciples’. On the day itself, we can encourage the faithful to pray for our parish communities, that they would become intentionally missionary in their life and witness.
A second collection will also be taken on Evangelii Gaudium Sunday to support the work of the Bishops’ Conference Mission Directorate. Please hold this important work in your prayers.

St Francis’ Church in Nailsea celebrate Education Sunday
Education Sunday took place on Sunday 8th September 2024 and was a day on which churches across England and Wales prayed for all those who work in education, and for all those who learn. It has been celebrated for over 100 years.
At St Francis’ Church in Nailsea, members of the school community (pupils, governors, staff and families) joined together with parishioners at the Sunday morning Mass. Together, they gave thanks for the gift of education and reflected on how the Church and Parish can support Catholic education.
As Education Sunday coincided with the start of the academic year, the school children took along items such as their school bags, jumpers and ties to be blessed by the Parish Priest, Fr Frank Wainwright.
