Equality Tasmania praises Mitch Brown for coming out & calls for state’s teams to be inclusive

Equality Tasmania has praised retired AFL player, Mitch Brown, for coming out as bisexual and called on Tasmania’s football teams to be safe places for gay and bisexual players.

Group spokesperson, Andrew Badcock, said,

“Mitch Brown's coming out will send a positive message to other gay and bisexual players that they can participate in the game and also be open about who they are."

“But more work needs to be done to ensure football culture is more accepting, as shown by the number of senior AFL players who have been suspended for homophobic slurs in recent months."

Mr Badcock said it was disappointing that Mitch Brown said he retired from football because of anti-gay prejudice.

"Sadly, many Tasmanian queer men retire early from sport, or avoid it altogether, because of prejudice against them."

“Tasmanian football can’t afford to lose the contributions of its gay and bisexual players so we call on the state's football authorities to ensure our teams are places where gay and bisexual players feel welcome and supported."
