The Community Sukkah - New Project

Each year there are several families in our community who are not able to build their own Sukkah (for various reasons), and as a result, would benefit from some hospitality on Sukkot.

While the Shul's sukkah is always open and available to anyone who wants to use it, we would like to help facilitate invites for these families to the homes and the Sukkahs of members of our community.

So if you are a family who either would benefit from a meal invite, or you are a family that would like to host another family, please send an email to President@arzeidarom.org and we will make the appropriate matches. Include in the email the number of people you need/can host, any food allergies, or any other relevant information.

Help needed

Interested in helping out at Arzei Darom? We need volunteers for several upcoming projects/events over the next month. If you are interested, you can speak to Yosef Rothstein or Miles Levin.

a) Sukkah builder - We need someone to be in charge of putting up the shul's Sukkah, the Sunday morning after Yom Kippur. Responsibilities include convincing a couple of people to help out, and putting in about an hour and a half of labor. Paulie will take out all the pieces, but some assembly is needed.

b) Simcaht Beit Hashoeva coordinator - We need someone to coordinate our simchat beit hashoeva celebration. Responsibilities include ordering food, setting up and cleaning up the sukkah, coordinating any entertainment/speeches. People will help with the setting up and cleaning up, but we need someone to be in charge.

Dedication Opportunities

My Fellow Member:

A dream of a strong and vibrant community in the South of Cedar, that started to take shape in 2001, took a big step forward in 2008 when we moved into the building. Recently, we've continued to push that dream forward with the installation of the mizrach wall, the aron kodesh, the bimah, the amud, and the Rabbi's shtender.

As we continue to grow as a community and to build our beautiful shul, adding piece by piece, we cannot help but recognize the significant contributions so many have made over the past decade. We must offer our thanks to everyone involved for helping to enhance such a wonderful and welcoming community.

As we inch ever closer, we want to give everyone who is currently a part of our shul an opportunity to participate in the completion of our shul. Understanding that this is both a tzedakah and a commitment to our future, we hope to find opportunities for everyone to participate. In the near-term a permanent donor wall in the lobby listing the dedications is planned. The attached dedication page lists remaining opportunities for dedications.

Please consider being a part of this. Be a part of creating something amazing. Be a part of building a communal home, a Mikdash Katan, for our children, our families and our friends.

If you are interested in contributing to the shul's continuing construction, please contact one of our committee members, Donny Furer, Carlos Sarue, Ben Ryp, or Akiva Distenfeld. You can also join with another family to dedicate an item together. If you want help finding another family to work with, please contact any of our committee members. In addition, arrangements can be made to pay for a dedication over a period of time.

Sincerely,

Yosef Rothstein
President, Arzei Darom

Shul-wide Learning

In honor of Sukkot, we are continuing our shul wide learning program of Tanach. Men, women, and children are encouraged to sign-up to choose a sefer for independent study, using the attached Google Drive. The completion date is for Shabbat Chol HaMoed Sukkot for a siyum in the sukkah during Shalosh Seudat.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g7fvIpNE4xsT7POMUy15z45bQWlWd70ULmJgV2qoB8U/edit?usp=sharing

Our hope is to have every member of the Arzei Darom community participate in this siyum. In order to allow everyone to participate, regardless of their background or skill set, we have broken the portions up in to small manageable sizes. In addition, there are many wonderful online shiurim that cover the text of each of the books of Tanach, which can help you get through a sefer. For example, the OU has a series of shiurim, both on the weekly Torah portions, and on each sefer of Nach. Links to each series is provided below and can be used to get you through a portion of Nach:

https://www.ou.org/torah/parsha-series/shnayim-mikra/#?

https://www.ou.org/torah/nach-series/nach-yomi/#?

Please also consider sponsoring this wonderful event! Contact Miles Levin at mlevin18@gmail.com for details.

Mommy and Me
Mommy and Me typically meets every other Shabbat at 10:30 am in the right side classroom. To get involved (or serve as the occasional back up for Shira) send an email to shirasilverberg@gmail.com. Leading Mommy and Me is very easy and we have lots of enthusiastic 5th and 6th graders to help out and sing the songs.

Please remind your children to be prepared to participate in davening.

The L'chaim Fund

Arzei Darom is grateful for the contributions toward our communal kiddushim's availability of whiskey and other mashke. Together this fund ensures that our members, guests and new South of Cedar neighbors, can share a friendly l'chaim at kiddushim and avoid having short supply from week to week. If you are interested in joining in this effort, please speak to Jay Haberman. Suggested contribution: $100 or donation of 1-2 bottles.

Thank you to the many families who have already contributed: Barber, Blaiberg, Cohen, Distenfeld, Einhorn, Eisenman, Furer, Haberman, Horowitz, Kirschner, Leifer, Levin, Niazov, Polinsky, Ramirez, Rothstein, Rubinstein, and Shore families.

Kiddush Cooperative 2016

We are excited to start the new cycle of the Kiddush Cooperative! The Kiddush Cooperative has enabled our congregation to enjoy hot kiddushes throughout the year. We are looking for new members to join our 2016 cycle. The cost is $200 per family. If at least 24 families join we will be able to have 8 hot kiddushes! Please email Holly Weiss at holly.ohrenweiss1@gmail.com to add your name to the Kiddush Cooperative.

Thank you to the following families who have renewed for this cycle: Adams, Alt, Anonymous, Barber, Barta, Blass, Borodach, Cohen, Distenfeld, Einhorn, Eisenman, Knoll, Lehrer, Levin, Mittan, Rabitz, Rivkin, Rothstein, Rose, Ryp and Silverberg/Haldorsen.

Kiddush Committee News

Families interested in sponsoring a kiddush and/or seudat shlishit should contact Holly so that she can reserve the date on the shul calendar. Please also let Holly know if you would like to participate in an upcoming Crock Pot Challenge which generally takes place around Rosh Chodesh. We've been doing these for a year and are always seeking new families to take the challenge.

Kiddush clean up is on a rotating basis, based on your last name. While we recognize that everyone in your group may not be available each Shabbat, we ask that you pitch in if you are assigned in that month so that the same people are not doing the clean-up each week. We all like kiddushes and we all make plans for lunch after shul so please be respectful of your fellow congregants by helping out during your assigned month if you are in shul. We also ask that you please watch your children during Kiddush to the extent possible, and to place their finished items in the garbage cans provided.

October:Brodsky, Carman, Darack, Furer, Goldgewert

For more information on anything Kiddush related, please contact Holly Weiss at kiddush@arzeidarom.org.
