Giuda Are Back!
and they’re hosting a two-day Rock ‘n’ Roll Party at The Lexington to celebrate the release of their new single “Rock ‘n’ Roll Music” on Rise Above Records….
GIUDA
GIUDA – ROCK ‘N’ ROLL MUSIC
New single (vinyl/digital) and video out 30th March on the London-based label Rise Above. A two-day launch party for the release will take place in London at the Lexington with gigs on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th April.
Recorded live to ensure the harnessing of the solid power of their on-stage performance, here is the aptly-named new Giuda single: “Rock ‘n’ Roll Music”.
Stronger, tighter, rougher and darker than ever, but still never losing sight of that ultimate killer hook.
Insistent riffs, loud handclaps and sing-a-long refrains are omnipresent but the band sound has evolved yet again, pushing forever harder against the ever-shifting boundaries of Giuda’s World.
A video for “Rock ‘n’ Roll Music” shot on 35mm tape and directed by Nicola Piovesan will accompany the release.
Prepare to sing a new hymn, Giuda are back!
Out 30th March on Rise Above Records
CYANIDE PILLS
The Leeds five-piece consists of Phil Privilege (Shouting), Alex A (Twanging), Sy Pinkeye (Strumming), Chris Wrist (Banging), Alarick ‘The Trick’ (Rumble).
Think of The Boys, Buzzcocks, The Ramones, The Dickies, Clash, Vapors, Radio Stars, Nosebleeds etc and you won’t be far wrong – this is kick-ass, Punk Rock, New Wave, Power Pop
“fresh helpings of pop-flavoured (Buzzcocks not Blink) ditties that’ll lodge themselves in your front lobe and prove difficult to budge…Superbly refreshing” – Rock Sound Aug ’10
“A spike-domed, pogo-pop sugar rush” – Big Cheese
”Cyanide Pills kick out a spirited Brit-punk rave-up like nobody’s business” – Vive Le Rock
ULYSSES
Bath’s rock upstarts Ulysses deliver quirky pop delights and to die for big riffs with what is fast becoming Ulysses’ own distinct sound – a nether land between psych, glam and rock, guitar stroking and pop sheen.
Having toured with Rival Sons, Purson and members of The Black Crowes, and with new 2016 album ‘Law And Order’ made with producer Steve Evans (Robert Plant / Siouxsie / Goldfrapp), it seems that Ulysses have unknowingly brought their cheeky influences (Syd Barrett, psych-era Stones, The Cars, Thin Lizzy, Hot Chocolate, Supergrass, Sailor, Alvin Stardust and Paul McCartney & Wings) to the heart of the new rock elite.

WHITE TRASH
“Formed on the first day of summer 2017. Hailing from the junky playground of Stokes Croft Bristol. We have an agenda! In a world lead by the right, all we want to do is the wrong. We are here to clean up the airwaves, tear down the billboards, put an end to the high street hardcore and top man mosh pits.
White trash are:
1: Al Kershaw – the animal who bought you the soul boy chaos of The Computers
2: Lianna Lee Davies – (of Turbowolf) A women so fierce with four strings in her hand she is both feared and loved throughout the land.
3: Aidan Sin – the boy with that hair. The man with that style. The back beat of The Computers and any descent music you have heard of late.
4: James mattock- (formally of Sharks) The dream boy of punk rock. If Lux interior & Joey Ramone had a kid he’d be it!
5: Flip de Capo – professional skate boarder. Amateur human being. Killer guitarist! This decade of descent needs to end, and we wont stop until it’s done. Most importantly never forget, no matter what they say…YOU ARE TRASH! Listen>> http://bit.ly/LISTENTOWHITETRASH

St Agnes – ‘A stomping, snarling piece of psych-rock, there’s an electricity running through the track, and indefinable chemistry which draws on the spirit of Jim Morrison’ – Clash Magazine
Sister Witch – A daemon baby doll Bonnie Parker, dragging her feet back home after an all night bender in Zelda Sayres skin. Lungs full of laudanum, lovelorn, lost.
Dolly Haze broken vocals, accompanied by restless drumbeats and guitars that roll their eyes at the attempt of vengeance. Alongside a quiet but calculating Warhol cult leader.
Psyence – ‘“The drums sound like Can’s ‘Vitamin C’ as the guitars play a frantic game of snakes and ladders through the kaleidoscopic soundscapes.” The NME
“Psyence are now ready to show the world what they’ve got, in their case face melting 60s rock that sounds like Wooden Shjips drowning in a thick, molten vat of acidic organs and churning riffs. The aptly titled Chemicals For Breakfast means your cornflakes will never taste the same again.” Q’

Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu), Eric Chenaux
Upset The Rhythm presents
When: 09/04/2018 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £12
Ticket Link: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/425102
JAMIE STEWART has spent 2017 showing how skilled he is at multi-tasking, having toured the most recent Xiu Xiu album ‘Forever’, piled on the sonic pressure with Lawrence English as HEXA and having paid final homage to The Music Of Twin Peaks. 2018 sees that all change with Jamie committing to some rare solo performances. The format is simple: Jamie, electric guitar and voice, reducing the Xiu Xiu songs you know and love down to their most fragile husk state. As the principle songwriter, musician and vocalist behind avant-pop legends Xiu Xiu, Jamie Stewart is very much one of UTR’s favourite artists. Jamie draws heavily from wildly disparate sources – cacophonous noise, gamelan, folk and the lush hooks of 80s UK post-punk, to name a few – while his tortured lyrics and anguished delivery consistently deal with the morose, suspected and the taboo. Expect new material, unusual covers and favourite tracks from the Xiu Xiu back catalogue, making for a truly memorable experience.
www.xiuxiu.org
ERIC CHENAUX is an adventurous guitarist, singer and composer based in Paris. Having been an active player in Toronto experimental music circles with a host of group and collaborative works, Chenaux has more recently amassed a body of solo work across five albums on the Constellation label, centering around his dextrous, fried guitar playing as juxtaposed with a gorgeously lyrical vocal style. An ingenious recombinant use of traditional folk, psychedelic pop and consort music in earlier albums has over time evolved into a wholly uncategorisable form of balladry, shot through with a singular vernacular of guitar improvisation.

9.45pm Jamie Stewart

The Lexington Pop Quiz with quizmaster Paul Guided Missile
with top of the pops quizmaster Paul Guided Missile
When: 09/04/2018 08:00 pm
Location: Downstairs
The all-new but very familiar quiz! Now called The Lexington Pop Quiz. Still hosted by Paul Guided Missile. Now £2 entry person. Now with top prize of £60, second prize round of drinks, multi-pack of crisps for best team name.
Name that tune, identify the popstar, answer the headfuck question, spot the intro – multiple rounds of pop-related trivia questions presented by exceedingly entertaining quizmaster Paul Guided Missile. Book tables at 7pm (or earlier) for up to six players per team. Email info@thelexington.co.uk to book (no charge apart from the £2 per person quiz charge…)
“The best pop quiz in town” – Pub Quizzers
“It’s far from serious stuff as the potty-mouthed quizmaster guides you through some pretty silly rounds, including one based on Bob Holness’s ‘Blockbusters’. A multipack of crisps goes to the team with the best name, as judged by a ‘clapometer’.! – Time Out ‘London’s Ten Best Pub Quizzes’.
“Die-hard musos will love The Lexington’s effort, in conjunction with Rough Trade Records, with rounds such as Badly Drawing Boy, in which teams guess the LP sleeve from a kiddy’s scrawl.” – British Airways” High Life magazine.
“I was really expecting it to be damn tough, but it was definitely accessible to all levels of music knowledge (the first question was to name just onemember of JLS – no, we didn’t get it)……….
Here’s a couple of questions that I can remember – What was Bob Marley’s middle name? Nesta (we got that one)
What was the name of Tele Sevales’ big hit in the 70s? If (we didn’t get that one). In the picture round there was a picture of two toilets as a cryptic clue to an artist – who was it? Lulu, of course (got that one too). Lots of fun … and the host is quite the wit.” – “I ♥ MUSIQUE
“Paul is a London legend” – Billy Reeves, BBC London 94.9
“This one is big. Really big… ” – Qype
“Quizmaster Paul is halfway through a bravura performance of Bat Out Of Hell on his Bontempi keyboard. I look around and a good 60 per cent of the assembled audience is literally weeping with laughter. This is without doubt the best pub quiz of all time” – Jude Georges, ‘Twee’ fanzine
“Some Northern bloke hosts it and for one round plays pop hits on a Bontempi organ.. everyone laughs their heads of when they realise the plinky plonk bossanova tune he’s playing is actually Anarchy In the UK or something, then he looks up completely straight faced and says ‘OK, so 2 points if you can guess that one.’ Haha…” –
Tripadviser review of The Lexington
“That was a thoroughly exciting Rough Trade pub quiz. Our team won a round of shots and @paulgmissile called an unfunny heckler a c*nt” – Chris Monk, Twitter
SIX EXCITING ROUNDS, always finishing off with the slightly rubbish live music round!
PRIZES to be won each week include £60 cash, drinks and multi-pack of crips for the best team name!
Guaranteed the best way to kick off the week.. and with added beer!

When: 11/04/2018 07:30 pm

Hailing from Saskatoon, three-time JUNO awarding winning artists THE SHEEPDOGS’ burst onto the international scene after beating out thousands of artists in 2011 to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. Since then, The Sheepdogs have amassed six JUNO nominations, toured worldwide and earned Platinum certification for their 2010 LP Learn and Burn.
The Sheepdogs’ latest self-titled LP produced by Patrick Carney (The Black Keys) debuted at #1 on the Top 200 SoundScan Chart, garnering another GOLD record for the band.
“Our goal is two-fold,” Currie says. “We want to make killer albums that people really want to listen to, but we also want to have a really reputable live show. When we come through town we want to be the hottest ticket there. Those two elements are what make a truly great rock and roll band. Really, though, we just want to play to anyone who is willing to give us a shot and who wants to have a good time.”

Mogli, Tuvaband
Bird on The Wire presents
When: 12/04/2018 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £8, sold out
Ticket Link: http://birdonthewire.seetickets.com/go/moglithelexington
Mogli loves life and everything about it. She spends nearly all of her time singing or traveling – preferably both.
In 2016 the 23-year old singer embarked on her biggest adventure yet: Expedition Happiness. Together with her partner and film-maker Felix Starck she converted a 40 foot school bus into a loft on wheels and traveled through North America for one year.
On glaciers in Alaska and in the jungle of Mexico, on mountain peaks and in the desert, Mogli found inspiration for her second album Wanderer. Having her piano and guitar on board made it possible to write songs literally in the middle of nowhere.
The result is haunting. Some songs incorporate the epic vastness and depth of nature while others are like a window to her inner self. You can feel she was deeply affected by the beauty of earth and how the grand scale of environments moved her to reflect on herself and her life.
Her melancholic songs are often arranged with bold drums, timbal sounds and choirs, but her folky melodies sometimes only need a Grand Piano. The production captures the intensity of a live recording and adds electronic aspects in the right moments making Wanderer a high quality modern album while keeping it raw.
With a voice that is delicate in one and intense in the next moment Mogli takes you to far away places. The spheric first single ‘Alaska’ draws you in from the first second and doesn’t let you go. It is the title song to the movie Expedition Happiness – the new documentary opening in German cinema in May with the international cinema release following later this year. The young couple filmed, produced, directed and distributed every minute of it.
Wanderer, Mogli’s new album was released on the 5th of May without a label following the tradition of self made success. Naturally is is also the soundtrack to the movie.

‘A series of striking, stylized singles and a moody, gripping debut album (Songs From The Bar Room Floor) connected the dots between the Vox organ veneration of the ’60s and the modern noirs of Tindersticks and Nick Cave, creating a darkened stage for a flurry of soulful sounds that might be called garage if their creases weren’t so sharp.’

North Sea Radio Orchestra, Valve
When: 15/04/2018 04:00 pm

Price: £adv £11
Ticket Link: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/433518
In the October of 2002, composer and guitarist Craig Fortnam found himself walking through the City of London with a sackful of tunes slung over his shoulder; tied to a stick (Dick Whittington style). Now, as all music comes from the air, the sack was all that stopped Craig’s tunes from escaping and following the Thames out to sea. Needing a substance with the weight of history behind it, Craig bent down and began to scoop up handfuls of London clay, folding and kneading it into the melodies and chords from his sack. As this was such hard work, he got his wife, Sharron, to help. As she folded and kneaded, she began to sing, so her beautiful voice found it’s way into the expanding mixture.
When the music was almost ready, Craig called together twenty musicians and singers from all over the Great Metropolis and they all ducked into St. Martin’s-within-Ludgate where the North Sea Radio Orchestra was born. As the clay music was still wet, and therefore somewhat fragile, NSRO only performed in the City of London for the first while. So, their growing audience had to travel to the strange and magical streets of old Londinium to hear the beautiful sounds.
Eventually NSRO ventured forth into the wider world where they have attracted many glowing reviews for their live and recorded performances.
They like to play in churches like St Olaves Hart St or St Giles in the Fields. They enjoy the resonant acoustics and the lack of amplification. Art galleries suit them fine too, like the Fishmarket in Northampton or Whitechapel Art Gallery in East London. They like to play at around five o’ clock at festivals like The Green Man, Frome Festival or the City of London Festival. They enjoy performing in rock venues and opera houses with amplification or classical stages like the Purcell Room. Likewise they are not adverse to performing live for BBC6 Music or Radio2. If you ask them they’ll probably play just for you.
They have released four albums for your pleasure and are already working on a fifth.
VÄLVÄ’ is the outlet for composer/performer Chlöe Herington’s compositional work using text and image as the starting point for scores. She collects sounds and diagrams, composing predominantly for bassoon, saxes, electronics and found sounds to explore synaesthetic memory and collective experience.
The band has been morphing – from what originated as a solo project, performing mainly in art galleries, it grew to include Elen Evans on harp. After moving from from galleries back into music venues, they were recently joined by Chlöe’s Chrome Hoof comrade, Emma Sullivan on bass, microkorg and vocals. VÄLVÄ’ are now three! Live, the music traverses the realms of noise and improv into songs, punctuated with found sounds and eases into spacy soundscapes.

“mighty impressive” (Chris Hawkins, BBC6)
‘Best Unsigned Artist 2017’ (Shoreditch Radio)
Roxanne de Bastion sings deep and delicate songs that dance between left-of-the-middle pop and 60’s inspired rock. Her 2017 release ‘Heirlooms & Hearsay’ made the UK independent music scene take note: from BB6, to Clash, FATEA and R2 Magazine, the nation is falling in love with the London / Berlin artist, who delivers sharp social commentary with a pure and instantly recognisable voice. Over the past 18 months, de Bastion has opened for the Wainwright Sisters, Thea Gilmore & Lambchop, toured in the US and has graced Glastonbury’s Acoustic stage and Cambridge Folk Festival’s stage 2. The Lexington show will be a full band performance, featuring songs off her album as well as new material.

Bird On The Wire presents

Ticket Link: http://birdonthewire.seetickets.com/go/clubkuruthelexington
Club Kuru are a British five-piece alt-psych-band, fronted by Laurie Erskine and Laurence Hammerton. Following last year’s widely acclaimed EP and single releases, which saw them secure notable support from BBC 6Music and Radio 1 they are now readying the release of their debut LP; Giving In.
The band share eclectic inspiration from classic greats such as Shuggie Otis, Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones. And you will often hear Steely Dan and The Beach Boys humming from within their studio walls. They use and have studied recording techniques from a bygone era, solely using analogue synthesisers and equipment. With musical roots firmly in the jazz and soul traditions they have built a richly textured, flowing, contemporary sound. Their music is characterised by its jerky grooves, mellow, silky vocals and harmonically complex song writing.
Themes of lost love and broken dreams sit gently against a soft, summer backdrop. Ultimately, the sound is unique – it is the product of the band’s bare hands, put together in the space they worked tirelessly to perfect.
Giving In will be released on 23rd March via Absolute.

Echopark: London-based musician, la named, Echopark makes ambient electronic cuts. Born in Italy, the rising star grew up playing the guitar in friends garages and basements, skating badly, attempting to build audio instruments and chucking things from heights. Apparently this made for top inspiration when it came to his own distorted, crisp indie blend. His music is a mix of layered harmonies built on walls of guitars and synthesizers, never too polished, never to raucous. Check it out, then check out to experience it live.

– Sahera Walker, Some Might Say Zine, Issue #2
Concrete Caverns are a London-based four-piece punk rock band. Endless gigging and writing since formation in October 2014 has lead the band to secure main stage festival slots at Village Green Festival and Wilkestock Charity Music Festival. They’ve also had the pleasure of supporting Otherkin at their biggest London headline show at Camden Assembly. Their debut single, ‘Unforgivable’, was released on October 27 2017, and was instantly playlisted by Indie Central Music and Vibe 107.6FM. “It’s called BANDANTE, I like the name; it’s provocative…it’s got a certain thing about it!
Bandante feature George Vjestica, best known as the guitarist in the Bad Seeds, Kai Stephens on bass and Sammy J Stopford on drums.
I want to experiment, make it kind of underground. No two gigs are the same, anything can happen. A friend of mine, collage artist Timothy Shepard, has been involved with the visual side of things and directed the video for the new single ‘Bang Bang’. I really love his work, he adds another dimension to what’s going on live”.

Explaining Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra’s music is like describing a remembered dream. It feels familiar, but at the same time it feels new. It’s blues but not blues, folk but not folk, soulful but not soul.
Marty’s voice is beautiful and distinctive, his lyrics stark yet lush over gritty electrified guitar. Chris Lynch’s violin, Matt Goff’s percussion and Ben Berry’s rich bass meld beautifully. The chemistry of these friends is obvious. But one can also hear an urgency in the songs, expressing something elemental and perhaps contradictory: love and anger, joy and pain.
The live performance is at the core of this project: the band enters a trance and the music is born again as something new every night. They go from raw gospel blues to cinematic epics, from heavy driving grooves to delicately arranged folk songs. They leave the stage out of breath, the ground littered with broken strings and bow hairs. It’s hard to describe, impossible to categorize. Yet people who know the music will try to explain it to you, just as you might struggle to explain a dream in the morning. The visions might slip away as you recount them, but the feeling remains.
The band formed in Santa Cruz California in 2012 and has been touring relentlessly ever since, from San Francisco to New Orleans to London to Seattle. They invite you to join them.
“A band true to its name: soulful” – NPR
“Delightful… well crafted music” – SF Weekly
“Raw musical excellence… guitar, fiddle and double bass played to within an inch of their inanimate lives.” – 4000 Miles to Nashville
“Definitely on the top of the Americana list penned by any serious connoisseur of roots music this year.” – Portland Tribune
Support from MICHELE STODART
Over a decade since The Magic Numbers landed in the top ten with their double-platinum-selling debut album, Michele Stodart has taken temporary leave of the band she formed with her brother Romeo, to release her second solo album ‘Pieces’.
Released four years after her solo debut, ‘Wide-Eyed Crossing’, the nine songs that comprise ‘Pieces’ confirm that, almost by stealth, Michele has turned into an artist in her own right.
The bedrock of Michele’s writing is a reliance on rock-solid melodies that always stop short of outstaying their welcome. Keen to ensure that the tunes earned their place on the record, Michele wrote most of the songs on ‘Pieces’ away from her guitar – only setting them to chord sequences when they refused to leave her head.
“Steeped in languid melancholy… [it] sits in a rich tradition that encompasses such touchstone female performers as Karen Dalton, Judee Sill… Emmylou Harris, Allison Moorer or Gillian Welch… ‘Pieces’ may just be the most impressive record she’s ever made” – 8/10 – Uncut
“…instantly engaging and evocative melodies and sung with an open and honest conviction that reflects the experiences that inform her words… Stodart’s album is a thing of perfection” – Folk Radio UK

SLUG
HIGGLEDYPIGGLEDY
Label Memphis Industries
Release date 13 April 2018
“Black ramps up the funk on groove-driven art pop gems” UNCUT
“Combines Led Zep riffing, squelchy funk and a sprinkling of Odelay-era Beck” The Times
SLUG the nom de plume of North East merrymaker Ian Black, returns with new album HiggledyPiggledy on 13 April 2018 via Memphis Industries.
Whereas previous album RIPE was made in collaboration with Peter and David Brewis of Field Music, HiggledyPiggledy was composed, produced and played entirely by Black enabling him to give free reign to his beguiling brand of Dada-rock.
Black taught himself how to produce while making HiggledyPiggeldy, by all accounts a terrifying process that drove Black to the edge of sanity. To function he imagined himself variously as Lindsey Buckingham making Tusk, Eno producing Another Green World and Tod Rundgren laying down A Wizard A True Star.  In so doing Black was able to keep an equilibrium and make the record making experience experimental and spontaneous.
The album was inspired by a combination of The Residents, John Carpenter and the soundtracks of Don Cherry (particularly Holy Mountain) and Masahiko Sato (particularly Belladonna) plus the Dada art movement which will be self evident to anyone who’s seen the hilarious and life affirming SLUG live experience, replete with ever changing stage wear (snooker players, sailors, 50s jazz combo) and spontaneous crowd participation.
Black intended HiggledyPiggledy to be a more minimal affair than previous album RIPE, focussed more on rhythm and percussion. Thematically the record was written against the backdrop of political turmoil but really it’s about the strange life Black leads in his native Sunderland, an autodidact outsider living his life in Wetherspoons arguing with some of the questionable attitudes of locals. Blacks stated aim to “have fun writing truly horrible lyrics”, playing characters “venting in pubs, writing in the character of how some people think and behave”.
HiggledyPiggledy begins with first single ‘No Heavy Petting’ (the title taken from the dos and don’ts at Blacks local swimming pool), consciously written to be an aggressive album opener with and which pokes fun at Blacks own Mary Whitehouseish response to the sexualisation of TV. ‘Lackadaisical Love’ is another album highlight, one big 4/4 drum beat, fuzzy guitars like Maggot Brain-era Funkadelic, steel drums and fat moog bass. “A song about sex funnily enough” says Black. Other noteworthy songs include “Dolly Dimple”, a song about the pornography of wealth, power and business all dressed up like a late 70s Bowie record and the Suicide meets Sliver Apples of “Arbitrary Lessons In Custom” about “how we lose touch with people and friends we love and the slow burn of how it happens”.
The results whilst punchy and direct remain rich, strange and sometimes
unsettling.  HiggledyPiggledy, then is a perfect intro to the wonderfully weird world of SLUG.

From 2014 to 2017 Vundabar’s Brandon Hagen cared for a loved one that had fallen into a debilitating state of mental and physical decline. For four years his sickness and the eventual loss that followed became the focal point of Hagen’s life as well as his family’s. It was the bell jar under which they lived. Hagen was fractured into two selves; one, largely insular, racked by grief and loss and the other putting it on, touring relentlessly and hoping to be as affable as possible lest he ruin the opportunities at hand. These were the fencings and borders he made for himself and for a time he let them stand. He presented a shell of charisma and withdrew into isolation and despair, convinced he was doing right by the old dogma of stoicism. He didn’t tell a soul out of shame and embarrassment; whose he didn’t know.
‘Smell Smoke’, the band’s anticipated 2018 follow up to their breakout 2015 album ‘Gawk,’ is an attempt at openness and vulnerability. It’s an attempt at unlearning. It’s a document of grief; a child crying into the dark.

Over three years since the release of the critically-acclaimed ‘Mysteries’, East London’s Tigercats return with their much anticipated follow-up, ‘Pig City’ – a record that builds both musically and lyrically on their work to date.
Almost completely self-recorded and produced by bassist Giles, ‘Pig City’ hears a broadening of the band’s indie pop influences, expanding into highlife, afrobeat, and scuzzy West African psych. Sonically more aggressive, ‘Pig City’ is the sound of a band directing their anger at the incessant gentrification of East London as developers close in on the studio they call home.
Tigercats’ third record, and first with Barcelona label El Segell del Primavera, ‘Pig City’ is the sound of a band unafraid of changing a winning formula – with the results fierce, bold and powerful.

The Spook School
(Alcopop Records)
The Spook School are Nye Todd (guitar/vocals), Anna Cory (bass/vocals), Adam Todd (guitar/vocals) and Niall McCamley (drums). Since forming in 2012, they’ve released two records to critical acclaim: 2013’s Dress Up, a gender-binary eradicating release—noisy, cheery pop critical of social construction and its limitations, and 2015’s Try to Be Hopeful, a celebration of queer and trans identities from a place of newfound self-assurance. The band, whose name originates from the Glasgow School, have lived a lot of life since then: Could It Be Different? was written from space that follows aplomb. “You’re comfortable with yourself, as much as you ever can be but you have to live with that person anyway,” Nye says of the record, “There are more questions than answers. That’s why the title works well—it has that insecurity to it.” Adam agrees, “It also comes from a place of feeling like everything definitely isn’t alright now,” pausing. “Maybe things could change?”
“A theatrical indie pop band that embrace’s life’s misinterpretations and messiness…their noise-pop jams remain as joyful as ever” – Pitchfork
“The Spook School are that rare and beautiful thing: a band with something to say.” – The Guardian
“Societal norms and gender stereotypes are in the crosshairs of these threadbare tunes…trans love songs that hit home no matter your orientation.” – NPR
“Dance music for introverts, love songs for people who are too shy to be in love” – Stereogum

Kilimanjaro and Communion present
When: 08/05/2018 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £8

Stella Donnelly was raised between Morriston, Swansea in Wales and the burbs of Quinns Rocks, Western Australia. Donnelly got her start singing Greenday songs in her Aussie high school rock band, eventually turning her interest to jazz and contemporary as an adult studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
At the beginning of 2017 Donnelly released her debut EP ‘Thrush Metal’ and was met with critical acclaim. The five-track release was written over the space of two years; a musical undertaking resulting in a bold and unapologetic repertoire of songs which has forged Donnelly to the forefront of the new guard of Australian songwriters.
Donnelly’s brutally honest and witty observations of people and relationships are transformed into blissful poems and lyrical punch lines on her standout debut EP ‘Thrush Metal’. Donnelly’s relatable way of writing is her lens to the world in which we live, a glimpse into what it’s like to be a millennial woman in the age of Trump, Tinder and third wave feminism.

Thought Forms are one of those rare acts for whom the term “sonic progression” actually applies. Judging by the beguiling sound chasms of their debut, through the alternatingly brain-melting and biting Ghost Mountain to last year’s near perfect Songs For Drowning they are also on a quest for sonic perfection.
Oh and they can do it all live as well, and in spades! Which is why we are thrilled to put them on one of the best stages in London and on a Saturday night to boot.
Praise for Thought Forms
Ghost Mountain is a superbly heady mix of full on doom rock drone and effects laden MBV style indie rock… If you can imagine Sonic Youth colliding head on with Sunn O))) then you’re pretty spot on.
– Norman Records (9/10)
With facets of prog, doom, shoegaze and post-rock the four-piece craft atmospheric, gloomy cuts that are utterly satisfying and realised. Charlie Romijn carries the performance, veering in and out amid the menacing pianos and fuzzed up guitars and bass.”
– The Quietus
Songs About Drowning comes as close to a perfect ten as can be bestowed on any release that hasn’t stood a test of time or without making allowance for even the faintest prospect of improvement. On this showing it’s hard to see how they, or anyone else, are going to better this any time soon. Bets may now be off for album of the year.
– Terrascope
It’s their most accomplished statement yet, one which manages to sound more refined and grown up while still packing a mean punch to an exposed aural solar plexus. It’s difficult to overstate how good an album this is – you’d be hard pressed to pick a better album all year.”
– Soundblab
“If there is one album you need to buy this year, it’s Thought Forms’ third album, Songs About Drowning. It’s just sublime…
There is so much heart and soul in this album it is impossible not to be moved to tears and to want to crawl inside the music and live through the lyrics again and again.

Birds Of Chicago
Green Note presents
When: 14/05/2018 08:00 pm

Price: £adv £15
Ticket Link: http://www.greennote.co.uk/production/birds-of-chicago-2/
Birds of Chicago have been riding a swell of good mojo in the Americana scene since their inception in late 2012. With their new album, Love in Wartime, they are set to both confirm that roots world buzz, and break on through to a much wider audience.
Recorded in Chicago against a backdrop of bewilderment, deep divide and dread, Love in Wartime is a rock and roll suite with a cinematic sweep. Co-produced with Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), it evokes epic efforts of the 60’s and 70’s, with love as the undeniable through-line.
Built around the chemistry and fire between Allison Russell and JT Nero, and their rock-steady band, BOC tours hard. Russell and Nero played with different bands in the mid-aughts (Po’ Girl and JT and the Clouds) before finding their way to each other. Nero, who writes the bulk of the songs, found himself a transcendent vocal muse in Russell (a powerful writer herself) and the band honed its chops on the road, playing 200 shows a year between 2013-17. All that shaping and sharpening, over so many miles, led them back to Chicago’s Electrical Audio in January of 2017, to begin recording Love in Wartime. “Any act of love is an act of bravery,” says Russell.. We want to give people some good news. And we want them to be able to dance when they hear it.”
Their most recent releases include 2016’s Joe Henry-produced Real Midnight and 2017’s EP American Flowers, BOC’s debut from the label Signature Sounds Recordings. Critics have searched for the right words to describe Real Midnight’s deep lyricism, gut-punch singing and musicality…. “Secular gospel” was one phrase that caught some traction. That fervor is evident in Love and Wartime as well: “Roll Away the heavy stone/roll away the heavy hours/roll on in the summer moon/who’s alive who’s alive who’s alive?” The invitation is joyous, but urgent. There’s another phrase that they used to describe poetry intoned over roots music mash-ups: Rock n Roll. The Birds consider themselves a rock and roll band first and foremost, and Love in Wartime doesn’t leave any doubt about that.
Birds’ shows attract a mix of indy rockers, jam-kids and Americana/roots lovers, mixing moments of hushed attention with wild, rock and soul abandon. Says Nero, “a good show can send you back out into the night feeling — for at least a little while – that everything isn’t broken.”
These days, that’s no small thing.
“A prodigiously soulful husband-wife folk duo.” (Slant Magazine)
25 best singles of 2017 (Slant Magazine – “American Flowers”)
“Nero and Russell make rainy and sunny days feel the same – like treasures.” (Sean Moller, Daytrotter)

AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS
————————–
The band’s three-chord punk rock riffs would bring a tear to Kim Fowley’s eye. Then there’s Amyl and the Sniffers’ catchy track 70s Street Munchies, with its subliminal references to Eskimo Pies and Chico Rolls. And wasn’t sniffing amyl nitrate the cheap narcotic pleasure of many a ‘70s nocturnal gathering?
Amy Taylor laughs when I make the superficial observation. “I suppose it’s just what interests me and influences me,” she says. “Growing up around my parents, who grew up in the western suburbs of Sydney, that’s what I’ve been around – muscle cars, shit punk music, that kind of stuff.”
Amyl and the Sniffers started out as an impromptu bedroom recording project. “We all lived together, so we all got home from work and study,” Taylor says. “Callum, another guy who I lived with, had all this stuff set up in my room, ready to record. So we sat down for four hours, we wrote and recorded and he mixed the EP and that day we put it out. ”

Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees & Beyond
DISCO DEMOLITION – WORLD TOUR 2018
Tragedy is back!  Fuller, firmer, longer than ever before!
NYC’s Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees & Beyond, is an over-the-top bombast of Disco, Metal, Glitter and Magic – the #1 Party Band.
LOUDWIRE: “one of the hottest bands on the internet…not just fun and catchy — Tragedy rules!”
ALL ABOUT THE ROCK: “far from being a novelty act, these guys are GENIUS. If they don’t put a smile on your face, you must be dead inside”
Born out of the impenetrable divide of Disco and Metal, these fearsome brothers fearlessly obliterated the truce line that had been set in the great Disco/Metal Peace accord of 1977 when they seamlessly blended the two genres with their debut album, We Rock Sweet Balls and Can Do No Wrong – a collection of Bee Gees songs redone in a heavy metal treatment reminiscent of Judas Priest, Motley Crue and Guns N Roses. Since then, they have crisscrossed the globe with their spectacular live shows and having stormed across the USA, UK, Germany, Netherlands, France and Switzerland. Subsequent full length albums, Humbled By Our Greatness, Death To False Disco Metal, The Solo Albums and The Joy of Sex have seen them spread their glittered wings to take on non Bee Gees classics from the disco era, soft rock anthems and party jams.In 2015, Tragedy broke the internet with a viral video featuring their take on You’re the One That I Want from the Grease soundtrack.  In 2017, Tragedy’s video for Stayin’ Alive broke the internet once again.
If you’re allergic to smiling be afraid… be very afraid. Tragedy sweats glitter and cums confetti!

Modern Studies
Fire Records presents Modern Studies, in celebration of the band’s second album ‘Welcome Strangers’. The record marks their journey into triumphant, anthemic lands, as well as building on the elegiac environs of debut ‘Swell To Great’. This beguiling return bears ten songs woven with tape loops, brass, tube organs, analogue synths and voices, as well as deftly orchestrated strings, calling to mind the likes of Robert Kirby or Arthur Russell. Elsewhere motorik percussion invokes the avant-garde spirit of Neu! to produce an album that magnificently defies genre.
“Songs that see the mystical beyond the material” MOJO

Lomond Campbell, inter alia, is a BAFTA winning songwriter and Scottish Album of the Year Award shortlister – with regular plays on many BBC networks. His cult FOUND collective cooked-up chocolate vinyl, built egoic ruminative robots and experimented with sound, light, olfactory and sensory triggers so as these songs might now pulse into mellifluous perfumes. His voracious musical appetite and genre-bursting abilities are regularly on display on his most recent record, in his collaborations and within his programming of Triassic Tusk – a record label he co-founded with Whisky Guru & DJ Stephen Marshall.

Her debut album is a twelve song run of empowerment anthems. To be expected, her initial release, Whites in their Eyes, was a self-assuring single. It hit as a belligerent attack in digestible, personable form – with her vocal delivery obviously sincere and her instrumental charge unignorable. Mattiel mixes soulful Americana with slick California sensibilities, and she’s taking it live in London. Don’t miss this.

They got off to a flying start with early standout track ‘Coming Down’, which was featured on Reverb Conspiracy Volume 2, a release double-headed by both Fuzz Club Records and Austin Psych Fest. In 2015, the band went on to produce a handful of cool and well-received demos that would ultimately assist in finding an album deal with Membran Entertainment Group in Europe/UK, and Metropolis Records in North America.
Subsequent releases have included two digital EP¹s, If You Don¹t Know Can You Don¹t Know Köln and Live At St. Pancras Old Church, plus the Youth mixed single Enos In Space (Top Of The World).
The band spent much of 2017 on the road, including tours of both North America and mainland Europe, with new drummer Frank van der Ploeg joining the group in the autumn.
Desert Mountain Tribe’s last single of 2017, the epic ‘Interstellar¹ taken from their 2016 debut album Either That Or The Moon¹, was edited down from its original nine minute duration and boasted a superb video directed by Daniel Turner of Sound & Colour, which won a Video of the Year accolade from the UK site Live4Ever and also US magazine Pow:

YE NUNS – launch their new limited 7″ single on State Records (I Don’t Want To Do This Again/Don’t Worry) with a party gig at the Lexington
“All female Monks tribute band Ye Nuns are fantastic. Way better than any obsolescent nu-garage rock revolution group I’ve ever seen.” The Quietus
On paper, Ye Nuns are a tribute band. An all-girl celebration of The Monks, proto-krautrock garage punkers formed by a gang of American GIs stationed in Germany who legendarily sported tonsures and nooses on stage. But Ye Nuns are more than a tribute band.
Formed by seven London ladies in 2006, Ye Nuns send witchy, six-part harmonies crashing over scratchy guitars, layer on evil fuzz bass and add pounding drums. Lead vocals screech and soar. Electric banjo hacks relentlessly. Vintage keyboard sounds stab. Yet it’s still music that puts grins on faces and gets feet moving.
In an arena where youth is often prized above talent, a band of seven women north of 40 is virtually unprecedented. Their experience and assured poise shines through on stage. There’s no need for faux-sexy posing or cute apologetic stylings. Members’ other bands include Curve, Mambo Taxi, Thee Headcoatees, Gay Dad, The A-Lines, Echobelly, Joanne Joanne, The Phantom Pregnancies and The Priscillas to name about one tenth.
“I love watching Ye Nuns! It was fun watching you guys do this! I love Ye Nuns!” Eddie Shaw (original member of The Monks)
THEE DAGGER DEBS are three girls brought together by their love of 60s garage and British R’n’B, pub rock and proto punk. The Pirates (with Johnny Kidd and without), Eddie and the Hot Rods, Dr Feelgood, Nine Below Zero, Hurriganes, Count Bishops, MC5, Thin Lizzy, Slade and The Stranglers -to name a few- always feature heavily in their record boxes.
Laura and Letty have been playing together since 2011, first in The Neasden Bees and then Thee Jezebels, and since the autumn of 2016, they developed their ultimate line-up with Paula in Thee Dagger Debs, an all girl pub-rock power trio. The girls have shared the stage with bands such as Johnny Moped, The Masonics, The Wildebeests, Graham Day and the Forefathers, Giuda and their beloved Los Chicos, and have built up a following both in the UK and across Europe, renowned for their sweaty, high-energy rock ‘n’ roll gigs, followed by happily propping up the bar and dancing ‘til dawn.
After the release of a single and a follow up E.P on State records, they have their debut album out soon on Damaged Goods, produced by none other than the legendary Mr. Mike Mariconda himself.

Bedouine – The Road’s Own Music

“Arriving at each new city, the traveler finds again a past of his that he did not know he had: the foreignness of what you no longer are or no longer possess lies in wait for you in foreign, unpossessed places.”
― Italo Calvino

“I am a pilgrim and a stranger traveling through this wearisome land. I’ve got a home in that yonder city, good Lord and it’s not, not made by hand.”
― Traditional

Bedouine , a gallicized riff on bedouin, the nomad, the wanderer. Anyone can assume such a name, but Azniv Korkejian has an experience of what it means , the type of ground it covers. “Moving around so much caused me at some point to feel displaced, to not really belong anywhere and I thought that was a good title.” Her development was shaped by political landscapes and family opportunities, her adult life patterned by paths of her own. Born in Aleppo, Syria to Armenian parents, Korkejian spent her childhood in Saudi Arabia, moving to America when her family won a Green Card lottery. They settled in Boston, then Houston, but she split for L.A. as soon as she could. A casual offer to stay on a horse farm took her to the rolling hills of Lexington, Kentucky, followed by a year in Austin, and a trip east to Savannah for a degree in sound design. Returning to L.A., she discovered a close-knit community of musicians in Echo Park that started to feel like home. Maybe America is just a highway that leads back to L.A.
Korkejian works with sound professionally, in dialogue editing and music editing, a slice of Hollywood’s sprawling industry. She never set out to be a singer in L.A., taking a zen approach to that part of her life, thinking that if it happens, it happens. “I just kept meeting the right people, who were professional musicians, and even though they were going on these big legitimate tours, they were still coming back to this amazing small scene, still demoing at home, and I immediately felt welcomed to join in on that. L.A. actually made me less jaded.” One day she walked into the studio of bass player / producer Gus Seyffert (Beck, Norah Jones, The Black Keys) to inquire about portable reel-to-reel tape machines and ended up cutting “Solitary Daughter in a first take. So they began another kind of journey.

Bedouine has a sound. Sixties folk meets seventies country-funk with a glimmer of bossa nova cool. Lithe guitar picking and precise lyrical excursions. That mesmerizing voice and phrasing. Working on around thirty tracks over three years, with contributions from a remarkable cast of players like guitarist Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, Johnny Cash), Seyffert and Korkejian brought a selection of ten songs to Richmond, Virginia. She specifically sought out Spacebomb, approaching Matthew E. White after a show in L.A. He remembers listening to the song she sent over and over, on and off the road, “‘One of These Days’ became our alarm when we woke up for almost all of that tour.” Anticipating this future collaboration, the tracks were created with breathing room for the Spacebomb touch and Trey Pollard’s sinuous symphonic arrangements. Back in California, Thom Monahan (Pernice Brothers, Devendra Banhart, Vetiver) brought all the elements together in a masterful final mix.

Eschewing notions of nomadic chic, Bedouine represents minimalism motivated by travel, paring down and paring down until only the essential remains. Her music establishes a sustained and complete mood, reflecting on the unending reverberations of displacement, unafraid to take pleasure along the way. At the end of “Summer Cold” Korkejian composed an interstitial piece to recreate the sounds of her grandmother’s street in Aleppo. Partly due to America’s role in destabilizing Syria, this sonic memory is the only way to return to her birthplace. Worlds that have been lost might only be accessed through a song, in a line or a melody or a trace of tape, but they must be looked for in order to be found, so she wanders on.

Green Note presents…. KELLY WILLIS
“Kelly Willis looks back to country music before Nashville embraced power ballads and cute happily-ever-after songs …Whether she was wishing for comfort, admitting to a bruised heart, yielding to illicit romance or trying to say goodbye, her voice was modest and true, illuminating the delicate tension and pain in every line.” – New York Times
Kelly Willis’ new album Back Being Blue is out May 18 on Premium Records/Thirty Tigers. The title track for the Americana standout’s forthcoming album premieres with Rolling Stone Country.
“Willis steps into the solo spotlight with her seventh full-length project, an enchanting collection of self-penned tunes and impeccably chosen covers. Showcasing the jagged, vulnerable vocals of a honky-tonk angel who’s also freely dabbled in rockabilly, power pop, new wave and R&B, it’s that last genre that informs the dazzling title tune” lauds Rolling Stone Country.
Of the title track Willis explains, “Up until writing that song, my songs were all feeling a little bit wordy and complicated and personal, and they just weren’t clicking. Then I wrote that one, I just felt like, oh!––what I need to do is try to simplify, and write these stories in a way that feels like you’re not quite sure what era they were written in.”
Back Being Blue is Willis’ seventh full-length studio album and her first solo project since her 2007 LP Translated from Love. Willis’ husband, Bruce Robison produced the new album analogue style in his rural recording studio in their home state of Texas. Willis wrote six of the 10 tracks herself, with help from the likes of Rodney Crowell on the additional four. Notable guests on the record include Eleanor Whitmore (of The Mastersons and Steve Earle and the Dukes), Mark Spencer (of Son Volt) and Trevor Nealon (of Band of Heathens).
Willis explains, “I attempted to make music that could fit in any era but leans on the simplicity of the music that first inspired me. Roots rockabilly country blues, to narrow it down for you! Kind of a Nick Lowe meets Skeeter Davis meets Crystal Gayle. Sounds that were in full blaze when I first moved Austin.”
Willis is herself a longtime feature in the city, having moved to Austin to pursue music shortly after graduating from high school. Not long after, famed singer/songwriter Nancy Griffith took a shine to her voice and recommended Willis to producer Tony Brown, one of the titans of Nashville country, who signed her to a deal with MCA. Willis found herself in the spotlight of country music world in Nashville, with three albums released to widespread critical acclaim.
In the intervening years, Willis’ refined her signature alt-country style on her own terms, releasing three full-length albums, and collaborating with her husband Bruce Robison on additional projects. Her last album, Translated by Love, was released in 2007 to ardent critical praise. NPR’s Fresh Air termed the album, “…a terrific piece of pop opera…” While Interview Magazine echoed, “…Kelly Willis ultimately blows away the year’s biggest noisemakers.”

“The wordy songsmith behind Canadian quintet The Burning Hell, Mathias Kom has a dry wit and sharp eye that elevate indie-rock tunes into offbeat storytelling treats.”
Uncut Magazine
“Those who love The Burning Hell really love them, and can’t wait to share their respect for creative driving force Mathias Kom’s hyper-literate, warm, and witty stories…Kom’s rapid fire lyrics contain deep emotional depth and wide narrative breadth while keeping a common touch.
The Digital Fix
“Canada’s The Burning Hell write the kind of literate, funny, catchy songs that makes you want to learn all the words and shout them passionately back in their faces.”
Drowned in Sound, June ’14
“Not many albums open with the line ‘You were a Nazi hunter…’. It’s just one notable way in which The Burning Hell’s sixth LP (but first the the UK) proclaims its lone wolf intentions. The band is mostly the product of songwriter Mathias Kom, a mischevious, caustic people’s poet with a world view that lets you know the good guys occasionally win. Kom sings what he sees, from truculent kids and their smugly indulgent parents to corrupt corporate greed, to some things he doesn’t: Norse gods and the futility of cults. His half-spoken baritone will appeal to fans of punk vet Jonathan Richman, the music to those of pioneering alt-rockers They Might Be Giants. If that sounds a little too college-rock clever, rest assured that Kom’s music falls on the right side of the indie rails, knowing but always careful to let the listener in on the joke.”
Q Magazine, February ’14
“Lyrics are the thing for Newfoundland-based songwriter Mathias Kom. His sixth album houses some extraordinary stories…the austere ‘Travel Writers’ bears comparison with Bill Callahan, and the words of ‘Grown Ups’ are a lesson in wit and nuance.”
Uncut, March ’14
“Even Jesus is going to enjoy this once he finally gets here.”
Tom Robinson, BBC Introducing

From the barrelhouse power of 1920’s Bessie Smith to the electrified sounds of 1960’s Betty James, blues music has always been a strong influence on the Boise, Idaho native.
On Down Hearted Blues (September, 2017 Signature Sounds Recordings) Eilen and her long-time road band (Jerry Miller, Shawn Supra, Jason Beek) rip through greasy versions of dark blues like Charles Sheffield’s “It’s Your Voodoo Working”, Willie Dixon’s “You Know My Love”, and Albert Washington’s “One of These Days”. The band also strips down the sound, trading in drums and electric instruments for washboards, mandolins, and banjos to cover songs like Memphis Minnie’s “Nothing in Rambling”, Bessie Smith’s “Down Hearted Blues”, and Moonshine Kate’s “Poor Girl’s Story”.
For over a decade Eilen Jewell has taken her brand of sultry surf-noir and dynamic Americana music to cities from Melbourne to Madrid to Manhattan. Her subtle but powerful musical approach, combined with her warm stage presence and evocative original lyrics, continue to gain her the loyalty of fans worldwide.

Ben Caplan is a genre bending songwriter and a performer with a captivating presence.
From the moment he walks onto the stage, you are filled with his infectious spirit. You can
feel Caplan's comfort and ease as he strides in front of the crowd and begins the controlled
collective descent into chaos.
In his latest project, Ben Caplan explores themes of immigration, loss, darkness, love, sex,
and God. Caplan is touring with a fresh batch of songs which were originally composed for
a new musical play called Old Stock: A Refugee Love Story. The award winning play, which
had it's international debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, has been a smash hit and it's
next stop is a whopping 7-week residency Off Broadway in early 2018. Between
performances of the play, Caplan is hitting the road to play concerts across Europe and
North America with a new lineup of musicians.
The sound is rooted in Caplan's resonant baritone voice, at times sounding like a lamb's
wool blanket, and in another moment like a steel wool scouring pad. Ben Caplan's voice is
supported with the sounds of piano, accordion, organ, clarinet, saxophone, violin, drums,
and the occasional acoustic guitar. There are rumours that a new album announcement is
just around the corner. In the meantime, tickets are going on sale for the next round of
international tour dates.
