NATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL 2018 LAUNCH

Victorian duo Cat & Clint peform at the 2018 #ourNFF Launch.

The 2018 National Folk Festival was officially launched last night at the National Library of Australia by ACT Minister for the Arts and Community Events Gordon Ramsay. Minister Ramsay spoke enthusiastically about the Festival and its importance as a major cultural event for the National Capital. The importance of the Festival’s ongoing partnership with the National Library of Australia was highlighted by NLA Director-General Dr Marie-Louise Ayres, while Board President Gabriel Mackey announced Margaret and Bill Winnett as the 2018 recipients of the Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The 60 strong crowd representing government, embassies, media, sponsors, volunteers and members of our festival community were treated to some fantastic poetry delivered by Andrew Galan and Laurie McDonald from Canberra, and music from Victorian duo Cat and Clint.
The countdown has begun and we look forward to welcoming you all to the 52nd National Folk Festival this Easter.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Awards that recognise achievement, excellence and nurture talent make an important contribution to maintaining a dynamic Australian folk community.  In 2018 the National Folk Festival’s most prodigious Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Sydney dancing couple Bill and Margaret Winnett for their significant contribution to enriching folk music and culture in this country.
A lifetime of dancing
Margaret began Irish dancing in 1957. Bill and Margaret met in 1964 and were out dancing five or six nights per week including performing with the Sydney Irish Ceili Dancers. They married in 1970 and joined Sydney Colonial Dancers in the 1980s and Sydney Playford Dancers in the 1990s.
Irish dancing is their first love and since 1989 they have made twenty-one trips to Ireland, attending summer schools, dance workshops and Ceilithe, immersing themselves in traditional Irish dancing culture. Together they share their absolute love of traditional Irish dancing with as many as possible and have travelled extensively in Australia and overseas doing just that.
#ourNFF Lifetime Achievement Awardees Margaret & Bill Winnett.
