— the median black family owns just $3,600, just 2 percent of the $147,000 of wealth the median white family owns. In fact, according to the Institute for Policy Studies, the wealth disparity between black and white families will take 228 years to close.  Join the Columbus African Council and other community partners for a conversation on the racial wealth gap and how we, as individuals and community leaders, can set a course for a more prosperous future throughout the African Diaspora in Columbus.  Location:  Columbus Metropolitan Library, 96 S. Tuesday, July 23, 2019, 7:00 – 9:00 PM.  A Concerned Citizen:  Civics in Action.
A CONCERNED CITIZEN is a documentary about Dr. Riki Ott, a whistleblower who predicted the Exxon Valdez oil spill hours before it happened. A toxicologist, author, and activist, Riki has been organizing the Gulf coast communities to recover from the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster. She is also helping to spearhead the campaign with Ultimate Civics, one that will introduce a Constitutional amendment to end corporate personhood, and to reform campaign finance and contributions.  The film also shows viewers how other citizens have followed Dr. Ott's example to change and strengthen efforts to curb oil pollution of America's lands, rivers and coastal waters.  Come early at 5 pm to network and enjoy food and drinks at the bar. We will head for theater seats around 5:30 pm - bring food and drinks with you if you like. The film is around 40 minutes, followed by a discussion/Q&A with local activists.  Free.
