Asafo Flags: Workshop at Nubuke Foundation

5th – 6th September 2009

Owing to the success of the Asafo Flags exhibition, the Nubuke Foundation followed up with the advertised “Asafo Flag Making” workshop. Participants learnt about proverbs and other imagery used to taunt opposing companies with flags. At the end they had a new respect for the master craftsmen who dedicate their time to the production of such exquisite art works as Asafo Flags. After the first day, it was realized that more than two days were required for very good results.  The workshop was facilitated Bernard Akoi-Jackson.

Workshop is still ongoing. Adults and children can sign up to design and make your own flags.

Print-WEAR

Exhibition/Show

8th – 18th September 2009

Goethe-Institut, Cantonments, Accra

The Print-WEAR Exhibition/Show came off at the Goethe-Institut in Cantonments on Tuesday 8th September 2009. This was a unique event as fabrics from the workshop, as well as wonderful new outfits, created by the two participating designers, Shika and Sylvanus were displayed. Shika made dresses for Elleonore Sylla, director of Goethe-Institut, and other staff members, which they wore with pride.

Since this was a sales exhibition, about half the fabrics on show were already bought as soon as the event was declared open. It was such brisk business as yard after yard of cloth was folded and handed over to buyer after buyer. The quality of fabrics and their uniqueness has led to interested patrons agitating for an immediate follow up workshop some  time soon, so that they too could have the opportunity to try their hands at making breathtaking fabrics. We’ll definitely have to wait and see what happens next year, if not even sooner.

KWAME NKRUMAH: EXHIBITION OF HIS LIFE AND LAUNCH OF LEXICON

13th September 2009

Nubuke Foundation

Nubuke Foundation has been one of the first venues to set the ball rolling on the Nkrumah Centenary Celebrations. On 13th September 2009, the foundation opened the show entitled: KWAME NKRUMAH: EXHIBITION OF HIS LIFE AND LAUNCH OF LEXICON.

Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s life was probably just a little bit more than fiction. It is indeed strange that he has not enjoyed as much mythification as other world figures. To a lot of people however, his life, so wrought with controversy, misunderstanding and almost super-human achievements, is the very stuff of which legends are written. The stature of the man and the significance of his philosophical thought, not only to Ghana, his Beloved country, but to the world at large cannot be disputed. It is in honouring this gem amongst gems, Kwame Nkrumah, arguably the foremost founder of this nation that the Nubuke Foundation conceived this show.

Larger -than -life and nostalgic, as if mirroring the very stature of Osagyefo himself, the black and white photographs on display, silently hanging on the gallery walls, evoke an intriguing response to all who see them. And as if to give voice to the silent photos, succinct quotes, carefully culled from some of the poignant speeches and writings, of this great African Personality, bring us to the awareness that it is time we revisited not only Kwame Nkrumah, but the great host of thinkers that Africa has nurtured for the world.

To his contemporaries, a shining example

and full of verve

To his people, a born leader

faithful and reliable

To his admirers, a source of inspiration

almost infallible

To his detractors, a bad headache

and full of nerve

And to the world an awesome enigma

we were only just awakening...(B.A-J. 2009)

The highlight of the day was the launch of a lexicon on Kwame Nkrumah.

The show: KWAME NKRUMAH: EXHIBITION OF HIS LIFE AND LAUNCH OF LEXICON is curated by Kofi Setordji and Odile Agyare and is ongoing at the Nubuke Foundation.

The whole month of October has been dedicated to children. They may visit the show in school groups of in family groups and also sign up to the Reading Club or any of the Workshops that are available.

The Talents Theatre group perform: “The Black Star”

National Theatre, Accra

It was such a pleasant surprise to see some ace Ghanaian Actresses and Actors bring onto the stage a largely refreshing theatrical piece to mark Kwame Nkrumah’s Centenary celebrations. With a well costumed, but quite obviously aging cast rendering some rather funky musical numbers, Kwame Nkrumah’s short rule as first president of Ghana was colourfully yet somehow tarryingly satirized. That the theatre was almost empty was a sad shame. I do not know why the public had to let such a production go waste. The actors were not deterred though. Sadly this very poorly patronised show has ended. Productions such as “The Black Star” need to be seen by more people. It is a dreaded fact that our nation is headed towards spiritual blindness due to our collective neglect of our cultural development.
