Recently the European Investment Bank has announced its decision to reinforce the support for investment in renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy grids. These sectors are expected to require the most significant investment in the coming years. Significant long-term investment across Europe is essential to achieve the energy and climate targets and maintain a technological lead. Over the last five years EIB lending to power generation projects using fossil fuels declined significantly and during this period lending to coal and lignite power stations represented less than 1.5% of overall energy lending.

Will South-East Europe take advantage of this growing market niche? Countries in the Region are moving forward in building of sustainable energy systems. They are updating their legislation and investing in innovative energy technologies.

For the 10th consecutive year, Sofia - the Bulgarian capital, will host the Exhibition and Forum on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (ЕЕ &RE). This event will be organized by Via Expo from 5th to 7th March 2014. It reflects the latest technological development and features with strong international participation of exhibitors, visitors, speakers and attendees who will discuss new projects and make new business contacts.

In this issue of our newsletter we will give you more details about a speakers lineup and event partners.

‘Rethinking District Heating and Cooling in Europe’
Euroheat & Power will organize a special session ‘Rethinking District Heating and Cooling in Europe’. The main focus will be on energy efficiency measures and costs, eco-efficient substations, renewables in district Heating – case-studies, etc.
Heating represents the largest energy end-use in Europe, being responsible for approximately 50 % of total final energy consumption. Cooling is critical for the correct functioning of computers and manufacturing equipment, and vital for industrial processes. Today, 40 % of commercial and institutional buildings in Europe have cooling systems and demand is set to grow substantially.

By 2020, the District Heating and Cooling sector must accelerate the green transition and will function as the backbone of smart cities by 2030. The energy transformation relies on the involvement of communities.

Euroheat & Power works for energy supply in balance with ecology, promoting the advantages of CHP/DHC in general and the use of renewable energies to preserve primary energies in particular, and pursues international measures to enhance innovation and the further development of the sector.
Euroheat & Power represents the interests of the sector at the political level, in particular in relations to the European institutions and other international organizations.
