This Week at the Richmond Memorial Library                                         July 1, 2024

Newsletter Format Update
In case you missed the announcement last week:

We've been hearing that our adult programs are often missed because they are listed at the very bottom of our newsletter. Therefore, to give some of our special adult programs a little more visibility, we have decided to switch things up a bit and follow a new format. Going forward, our newsletter will be organized as follows:

--Holiday and/or building closures will continue to be listed at the very top/beginning of the newsletter.
--Information that is most relevant to adults will immediately follow any updates about building closures, including general library information, programs, and new additions to our adult collections.
--Children's programming and collection information will then follow adult information and every attempt will be made to organize this from programs designed for our youngest to oldest children.
--Tween and teen programming will therefore be included towards the end of our newsletter.
--The last piece of information in our newsletter will be our building hours, contact information, and our required ADA disclosure.

We hope you find this new format easier to follow! We will continue to fine-tune it as we go along.

Independence Day Closure
The Richmond Memorial Library will be closed on Thursday, July 4, for Independence Day. The library will reopen on Friday, July 5, from 10am-6pm.

They Say I Have Dementia: What Does That Mean?
A diagnosis of dementia can be frightening for those affected by the syndrome, their family members, and friends. Learn more about the signs, symptoms, and different types of dementia with Patty O'Brian, a Dementia Specialist with Hartford Healthcare's Center for Healthy Aging, in this program held at the library on Tuesday, July 9, at 6:30 pm. Registration is required. Call 860-295-6210 or register online. This program will be held in our upstairs meeting room.***

Zina's Cucina Fundraiser
The Friends of the Library are working with Zina's Cucina for a fundraiser, to be held on Wednesday, July 17, from 11:30am-8pm. Zina's Cucina will be donating 15% of the proceeds made on this day to the Richmond Memorial Library. When placing your order, please let the restaurant know that you are supporting the library's fundraiser. There is also going to be a Pop-Up Book Sale on the patio from 12pm-6pm. We would like to extend a huge thank you to Zina's for working with us and to our community for supporting our library.

Adult Summer Reading Has Begun
This year’s theme is Read, Renew, Repeat and will run from June 20 to August 24. Just like the changing seasons, our lives go through cycles. We try new things, learn about ourselves and the world around us, grow and change, and feel brand new! This summer we’re embracing the idea that things can be used in different ways, recycled and refreshed, and given new life. Even us! Revive your senses, explore new ways of doing things, help the world around you – all while reading and learning new things. Adults who stop by the library to register for the summer reading program will receive a free Richmond Memorial Library book light!

Here’s how this year’s adult summer reading program will work:
  • Fill out a book review ticket for each book you read throughout the summer. Book reviews only need to be 2-3 sentences long (tell us something you liked or didn’t like about the book!).
  • If you attend an adult library program this summer, you can fill out a bonus ticket.
  • Instead of weekly prizes, this year the library is offering the chance to win one of two grand prizes at the end of the summer: A smart bird feeder with bird watching camera (valued at over $200) or a $100 Amazon gift card.
  • Enter your ticket into the jar with the prize you’re most interested in winning at the end of summer by end of day on Saturday, August 24.
  • We’ll hold our grand prize drawings on the evening of our summer reading finale (Monday, August 26) and contact the winner (you don’t have to be present to win).
  • Prizes must be picked up by Friday, September 27, or they are forfeited.

American Job Center Series
Are you (or is someone you know) looking for a new job, trying to restart or jumpstart your career, or in need of specific job skills training? We will be partnering with the American Job Center over the next few months to offer drop-in (no appointments needed) assistance with resumes, job search assessment, career coaching, computer literacy, mock interviews, and on the job training programs. If this is something that interests you, stop into the library on the first Tuesday of the month. Our next program will be held on July 2 from 5-7 pm. The American Job Center is a one-stop career center that offers free help to job seekers for a variety of career and employment related needs.

Hardcover Adult Fiction Book Donations Needed
The Richmond Memorial Library will be hosting a special Pop-Up Book Sale at Zina's Cucina in mid-July and we are therefore looking specifically for adult fiction hardcover books. If you have adult fiction hardcover books that you are looking to donate, please consider dropping them off at the library in the next couple of weeks. The deadline is Saturday, July 13. Unfortunately, due to space, we are not collecting any other materials at this time. Thank you!

Morning Book Club
The Richmond Memorial Library's Morning Book Club will meet on Thursday, July 11, beginning at 10 am. The group has chosen to read the book All Systems Red by Martha Wells. Please note that this is an update, as August's title was previously listed for July. The group will be reading The Verifiers by Jane Pek for their August 8 meeting. Copies of this month's book are available at the circulation desk. Registration is not required and new members are always welcome.

Beach Reads
Use our Encore catalog to put one of these books on hold today or ask our staff to put a hold on your account.

Beach Books are Back
Our popular Beach Books are back! If you're not familiar with how our Beach Books work, they are kept outside during the summer (we do try to bring them inside if severe thunderstorms are predicted) and our library users can stop by at any time to pick a couple out. We ask that you indicate on the sheet attached to the clipboard on the table the town you live in and how many books you are taking (we don't need the titles). This helps us with the statistics we are required to keep regarding library usage. Beach Books do not have strict due dates and we only ask that they be returned at the end of the summer or early fall.

Paige Says ...
Be on the lookout for Paige in our future newsletters! She will be popping in each week with her very own words of wisdom.

Request for Giant Cardboard Boxes
Do you have any giant cardboard boxes at home (think refrigerator or television size boxes) that you need to dispose of? The library is looking for extra large jumbo boxes for a children's program that will be held over the next few weeks. If you have a box to donate, please bring to the library during open hours. Thank you!

Yard Games
Did you know that our library has a large collection of yard games that can be checked out (we even have duplicates of a few games like Ginat Jenga and Giant Connect Four)? Due to their popularity, there is a strict limit of 2 per family at a time. They can be held for 2 days and borrowed for 7 days at a time. Renewals are not allowed. Call the library at 860-295-6210 for additional information.

Books for Babies

The Richmond Memorial Library has launched a new Books for Babies initiative to promote early literacy and learning while introducing library services to families in town. Marlborough families with children ages birth up to twelve months of age are invited to stop into the library to pick up a Books for Babies Box and register for your baby's first library card. Each Books for Babies Box includes two board books, a set of My First Touch and Feel Picture Flash Cards, early literacy and learning pamphlets and bookmarks, information about library programs for babies and toddlers, and supplies to get your child enrolled in our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program in addition to your child's first library card. Advance registration is required and can be done by filling out the following form:  https://forms.gle/QcLeJkNijHpkGFca9. This Books for Baby initiative has been funded by a Constellation Community Champions Grant.
