Featured Artist: Duncan Chisholm

An eagerly anticipated album featuring fiddle playing at its best from one of Scotland's finest players and composer Duncan Chisholm.

Born and brought up near Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland, Duncan has spent most of his life developing his unique musical voice. Duncan’s feather-light handling of dynamics and ornamentation, allied with his pure-distilled tone, lend his characteristic spine-tingling magic to his music.

Taught to play by the great Donald Riddell, few can match Duncan’s eloquent feel for a Highland air. Duncan's well-established musical career has taken him throughout the UK, Europe and the USA, both through his solo work and while playing with other musicians and bands. Duncan plays regularly with gaelic singing sensation Julie Fowlis, sets the heather on fire with his folk rock band Wolfstone and is much sought after as a composer and accompanist.

Sandwood - inspired by the bay of the same name, situated within the far reaches of the north-west coast of Sutherland, which lays claim to hold the finest yet least accessible beach in Scotland.

A major collection of Skinner's compositions by the fiddler Alastair Hardie, author of The Caledonian Companion.

Thirty-three famous tunes for violin, arranged in sets, composed or played by The Strathspey King, James Scott Skinner (1843-1927) as he performed in Scotland, England and America and also found in his recordings and publications.

William (Bill) Hardie described Skinner's style as characterised by "the fire and force in the marches and strathspeys, exhilaratingly fast reel playing and the poetic sensitivity of the slow airs".

They are here united with piano accompaniments, many authorised by the composer, with other accompaniments especially composed and arranged for the collection, designed to bring out the harmonic and chromatic richness of Skinner's style without ever dominating or outshining the pre-eminent writing for the violin.

Alastair Hardie's forbears were closely associated with this great fiddler-composer and therefore he has had the music in his head, heart and fingers all his life.

A versatile, free-thinking, impassioned performer, Sarah-Jane's unique style blends the lyricism of traditional music with the emotive rawness of improvisation.

A tradition-bearer of the old Highland style of fiddling, she was taught by the late, great Donald Riddell (1908-1992), who learnt his fiddling from a relative of hers, Alexander Grant of Battangorm (1856-1942). She is now based in Norway and holds a masters degree in Norwegian traditional music and free improvisation from The Norwegian State Academy of Music.

Sarah-Jane's extremely diverse skills on fiddle, viola and Hardanger fiddle have led her to perform at rock, jazz, folk, country, contemporary, noise/experimental festivals worldwide with artists as diverse as fiddle-quartet RANT, Julie Fowlis, Quatuor Bozzini, and top Norwegian pop band Highasakite.

A fabulous suite of music from one of Scotland's most celebrated musician and composer Blair Douglas.

"In early 1942, 500 Italian prisoners of war arrived on the island of Lamb Holm, Orkney, to work on the construction of the Churchill Barriers. They requested a proper place of worship and were given two Nissen huts to convert. A labour of love, artistic skill, and craftsmanship transformed the two huts into a moving monument to faith and peace." The Italian Chapel (La Chiesetta Italiano di Orkney).

Fascinated by the story of the origins of the Chapel, Blair has composed this fitting tribute to the dedication of the prisoners.

The music was performed and recorded in St Magnus Centre in Kirkwall.

The album includes fiddle, viola, harp, cello and flute arrangements, two pieces by the City of Kirkwall Pipe Band and a beautiful 'a Capella' song by The Mayfield Singers.
