Dit is de laatste PWN nieuwsbrief voor de zomervakantie. Wij wensen iedereen een prettige vakantie, en hopen elkaar in goede gezondheid weer te zien in september.

EMS PRIJZEN: CALLS NU OPEN
|
De EMS-prijzen zijn in 1992 ingesteld. Bij elke ECM (Europees Wiskundecongres) worden maximaal tien EMS-prijzen uitgereikt aan jonge onderzoekers die op het moment van nominatie niet ouder zijn dan 35 jaar, de Europese nationaliteit hebben of werkzaam zijn in Europa, als erkenning voor uitmuntende bijdragen op het gebied van wiskunde. Ook de Felix Klein prijs en de Otto Neugebauer prijs worden dan uitgereikt.

Unieke teamprestatie Nederland bij Internationale Wiskunde Olympiade
|
Chiba, JAPAN – Bij de Internationale Wiskunde Olympiade in Chiba, Japan hebben alle Nederlandse teamleden voor het eerst in de geschiedenis minimaal de helft van de 42 punten behaald. Bas Capel (17) heeft met 25 punten een zilveren medaille behaald, en de rest van het team gaat met een bronzen medaille naar huis.
De Internationale Wiskunde Olympiade is ’s werelds meest prestigieuze wiskundewedstrijd, waar meer dan honderd landenteams bijeenkomen. Op twee achtereenvolgende dagen kregen de scholieren steeds drie opgaven voorgeschoteld, die ook voor professionele wiskundigen nog behoorlijk lastig kunnen zijn. Zij kregen steeds vier en een half uur de tijd om de opgaven op te lossen, waarbij voor elke opgave zeven punten te verdienen waren.
De resultaten van de individuele leerlingen zijn als volgt:

VAKANTIECURSUS WISKUNDELERAREN 2023!!!

Kom naar de vakantiecursus voor wiskundeleraren (VC 2023)
“Priemgetallen”
(Antwerpen, 25-26 augustus, Amsterdam 1-2 september)
De Vakantiecursus voor wiskundeleraren zal dit jaar voor het eerst plaatsvinden, naast Amsterdam, in Antwerpen (wellicht een ideetje voor een weekendje weg).
De cursus biedt naast het inhoudelijk interessante onderwerp ook de kans om even ‘’bij te tanken’’ en met collega’s uit het hele land gezellig te lunchen en dineren. Dit jaar is de hoofddocent Frits Beukers (gepensioneerd hoogleraar getaltheorie, UU) . Gastdocenten zijn Roland van der Veen (universitair docent aan de RUG) en Benne de Weger (universitair hoofddocent aan de TUE) .
U kunt zich opgeven middels het aanmeldformulier op www.platformwiskunde.nl/vakantiecursus/. Binnenkort is de brochure, met daarin alle inhoudelijke en praktische informatie gereed, en deze zal dan ook te downloaden zijn op de pagina ‘Vakantiecursus’ op de website.
Vanzelfsprekend zijn uw collega’s, alsmede leerlingen uit de bovenbouw met interesse in wiskunde, en andere belangstellenden, ook van harte welkom!

ICIAM 2023 Conferentie in Tokyo
|
Eind augustus vindt in Tokyo de ICIAM 2023 conferentie plaats, de grootste wiskundeconferentie op het gebied van de industriële en toegepaste wiskunde. Meer dan 5000 deelnemers ditmaal, maar wel in een hybride formaat: men kan zowel online deelnemen als fysiek. In de Board meeting op 26 augustus zal Nederland vertegenwoordigd worden door Mark Roest, voorzitter van de commissie Innovatie. ICIAM conferenties vinden iedere 4 jaar plaats, in 2027 zal het congres in Den Haag plaatsvinden. Meer informatie over het programma: https://iciam2023.org/. Informatie over ICIAM: https://iciam.org/. Vanaf 1 oktober neemt PWN-directeur Wil Schilders het stokje over als president van ICIAM voor de komende 4 jaar.

Afsluiting Imaginary tentoonstelling
|
De rondreizende tentoonstelling ‘’Imaginary: pracht en kracht van wiskunde’’ is inmiddels afgesloten. Van eind juni tot medio juli stond deze op de laatste locatie, Maastricht. Ook in Vlaanderen is de tentoonstelling inmiddels ten einde. Deze editie was een groot succes, veel middelbare scholieren hebben de tentoonstelling bezocht en waren onder de indruk van de prachtige posters en de andere ingrediënten. Inmiddels worden er plannen gemaakt voor verder gebruik van het materiaal van de tentoonstelling, plannen met een meer permanent karakter. Hierover zullen we berichten zodra deze plannen meer concreet zijn.

De commissie Onderwijs maakt zich zorgen over de kwaliteit van het wiskunde-onderwijs, het lerarentekort en het dalende niveau van de PISA-score voor Nederland (zie o.a. ook het McKinsey rapport, dit voorjaar gepubliceerd). Om de zorgen kenbaar te maken, heeft de commissie Onderwijs een brief geschreven, samen met een aantal andere disciplines en instanties, aan de ministers van Onderwijs en Wetenschappen. Helaas is, zoals bekend, het kabinet afgelopen week gevallen, zodat het kenbaar maken van de zorgen op andere manieren zal moeten gebeuren.

Computational Science Platform
|
Vorig jaar werd de ‘’Nationale Agenda Computational Sciences voor een duurzame toekomst’’ gepresenteerd. Inmiddels is het ‘’Dutch Computational Science Platform’’ (zie https://www.dutchcomputational.science/) opgericht, en is er op 10 november weer een nationale bijeenkomst. Kees Vuik (TU Delft) was voorzitter van de werkgroep die de Nationale Agenda samenstelde, en leidt momenteel ook het platform.

Bas Edixhoven Memorial Symposium
|
Op vrijdagmiddag 2 juni 2023 vond aan de Universiteit Leiden het Bas Edixhoven Memorial Symposium plaats. Het symposium was gericht op een breed wiskundig publiek. Hendrik Lenstra en Jaap Top spraken over wiskunde met connecties met kunst, een onderwerp waar Bas erg van hield. Bas heeft erg veel betekend voor de Nederlandse wiskunde, en was onder andere ook erg actief voor Vierkant voor Wiskunde.

Outreachfonds betadecanen
|
Sinds 2019 kunnen ook wiskunde en informatica aanvragen doen binnen het outreachfonds van de betadecanen. De bètadecanen van de Nederlandse universiteiten stellen gezamenlijk geld beschikbaar voor landelijke outreach- en voorlichtingsprojecten. Het totaalbedrag van de beschikbare subsidie is €700.000,- euro per jaar. Projecten op het gebied van natuurkunde, scheikunde, wiskunde, informatica of domeinoverstijgend (STEM) kunnen een aanvraag indienen.
PWN stimuleert Nederlandse wiskundigen om aanvragen in te dienen, en dit heeft in de afgelopen jaren al tot een aantal successen geleid. Ook dit jaar zijn er vanuit de wiskunde weer 4 aanvragen gedaan, in september zal blijken welke gehonoreerd worden.
De nieuwe call zal pas volgend jaar voorjaar gepubliceerd worden, toch willen we langs deze weg alvast aandacht vragen hiervoor. Wellicht kunnen er kansrijke ideeën worden uitgewerkt welke volgend jaar mee kunnen doen met een aanvraag. Vooral ook op het gebied van onderwijs liggen er kansen, terwijl we de afgelopen jaren feitelijk enkel ingezet hebben op landelijke outreach. De volgende drie types projecten komen in aanmerking voor financiering:
- Landelijke outreach activiteiten in primair en voortgezet onderwijs (havo en vwo) en het algemene publiek op het gebied van natuurkunde, scheikunde, wiskunde, informatica of domeinoverstijgend (STEM);
- Onderwijsvernieuwing in primair en voortgezet onderwijs, gericht op vakvernieuwing en activering van docenten wiskunde, informatica natuurkunde en scheikunde en de aanpalende vakken;
- Vakinhoudelijke en/of vakdidactische professionalisering van docenten wiskunde, informatica natuurkunde en scheikunde en de aanpalende vakken.

NWO call Onderzoek op Routes door Consortia 2023 geopend
|
De programmalijn Onderzoek op Routes door Consortia (ORC) financiert onderzoeksprojecten van kennisketenbrede, interdisciplinaire consortia waarin ook maatschappelijke partners vertegenwoordigd zijn. Het aanvraagproces voor deze jaarlijkse financieringsronde van de Nationale Wetenschapsagenda (NWA) is nu geopend. In deze jaarlijkse financieringsronde kunnen consortia aanvragen indienen op verschillende thema’s die gezamenlijk uitdrukking geven aan de breedte en het vernieuwende karakter van de Nationale Wetenschapsagenda. De ronde is erop gericht om onderzoek mogelijk te maken dat leidt tot wetenschappelijke en/of maatschappelijke doorbraken. Ook voor wiskundigen is deze call interessant. Voor de 2023 call zijn er 9 thema’s uitgekozen, voorgesteld door de verschillende NWA-routes. EMS PRIZES: CALLS NOW OPEN
|
The EMS Prizes were established in 1992. At each ECM (European Mathematics Congress), up to ten EMS prizes are awarded to young researchers who are not older than 35 at the time of nomination, have European nationality or are working in Europe, in recognition of outstanding contributions in the field of mathematics. The Felix Klein Prize and the Otto Neugebauer Prize will also be awarded then.

Unique team performance Netherlands at International Mathematics Olympiad
|
Chiba, JAPAN - At the International Mathematics Olympiad in Chiba, Japan, all Dutch team members achieved at least half of the 42 points for the first time ever. Bas Capel (17) earned a silver medal with 25 points, with the rest of the team going home with a bronze medal.
The International Mathematics Olympiad is the world's most prestigious mathematics competition, bringing together more than 100 country teams. On two consecutive days, the students were presented with three tasks each time, which can be quite difficult even for professional mathematicians. They were given four and a half hours to solve the tasks, with seven points to be earned for each task.

ICIAM 2023 Conference in Tokyo
|
The ICIAM 2023 conference, the largest mathematics conference in the field of industrial and applied mathematics, will take place in Tokyo at the end of August. More than 5000 participants this time, but in a hybrid format: one can participate online as well as physically. In the Board meeting on August 26, the Netherlands will be represented by Mark Roest, chairman of the Innovation Committee.ICIAM conferences take place every 4 years, in 2027 the conference will be held in The Hague. From October 1, PWN director Wil Schilders will take over as president of ICIAM for the next 4 years.

Closure of Imaginary exhibition
|
The touring exhibition ''Imaginary: splendour and power of mathematics'' has now closed. From late June to mid-July, it was at its last location, Maastricht. The exhibition has now also come to an end in Flanders. This edition was a great success, many high school students visited the exhibition and were impressed by the beautiful posters and the other ingredients. Meanwhile, plans are being made for further use of the exhibition's material, plans with a more permanent character. We will report on this as soon as these plans are more concrete.

The Education Committee is concerned about the quality of mathematics education, the teacher shortage and the declining level of PISA scores for the Netherlands (see also, among others, the McKinsey report, published this spring). To make its concerns known, the Education Committee wrote a letter, together with a number of other disciplines and bodies, to the ministers of Education and Science. Unfortunately, as we know, the cabinet fell last week, so making the concerns known will have to be done in other ways.

Computational Science Platform
|
Last year the “National Agenda Computational Science for a sustainable future” was presented. Meanwhile, the ''Dutch Computational Science Platform'' (see https://www.dutchcomputational.science/) has been established, and there will be another national meeting on 10 November. Kees Vuik (TU Delft) chaired the working group that put together the National Agenda, and currently also leads the platform.

Bas Edixhoven Memorial Symposium
|
On Friday afternoon, 2 June 2023, the Bas Edixhoven Memorial Symposium was held at Leiden University. The symposium was aimed at a broad mathematical audience. Hendrik Lenstra and Jaap Top talked about mathematics with connections to art, a subject Bas was very fond of. Bas meant a lot to Dutch mathematics, and was also very active for Vierkant voor Wiskunde, among many other things.

Since 2019, mathematics and computer science can also apply within the betadecans' outreach fund. The beta decans of Dutch universities jointly make funds available for national outreach and education projects. The total amount of the available grant is €700,000 per year. Projects in the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science or cross-domain (STEM) can apply.
PWN encourages Dutch mathematicians to submit applications, and this has already led to a number of successes in recent years. This year, four applications have again been submitted from mathematics, and September will see which ones are honoured.
The new call will not be published until next spring, but we would like to use this opportunity to draw your attention to it. It may be possible to develop promising ideas that can be included in an application next year. Especially in the field of education, there are opportunities, while in recent years we have only focused on national outreach. The following three types of projects are eligible for funding:
- National outreach activities in primary and secondary education (havo and vwo) and the general public in the field of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science or cross-domain (STEM);
- National innovation in primary and secondary education, aimed at subject innovation and activation of teachers of mathematics, computer science physics and chemistry and the adjacent subjects;
- Professionalisation of teachers of mathematics, computer science, physics and chemistry and related subjects.

NWA call Research on Routes by Consortia 2023 opened
|
The Research on Routes by Consortia (ORC) programme line funds research projects of knowledge-chain-wide, interdisciplinary consortia in which societal partners are also represented. The application process for this annual funding round of the National Science Agenda (NWA) is now open. In this annual funding round, consortia can submit applications on various themes that collectively express the breadth and innovative nature of the National Science Agenda. The round aims to enable research leading to scientific and/or societal breakthroughs. This call is also of interest to mathematicians. For the 2023 call, 9 themes have been selected, proposed by the different NWA routes.
