“Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
- Dr. Martin Luther King
My dear Community, Friends near & far,
I am still holding onto the belief that, as members of the same race - humanity - we are, at the root and the heart, more similar than we are different, despite everything that's going on right now. Every human on this planet wants to feel loved, respected, safe, and understood, and everyone is working towards this the best way they can.
The event I organized on Friday January 20th, Hope Rising, turned out SO beautifully. We had over 150 people gather (on less than 2 weeks notice!) of all ages, from babies to elders, and we sang, and were lifted, and inspired. We needed this. We also raised $700 for Planned Parenthood - community in action! Check out the photos {HERE}
I have had many request for more such community singing events, and I promise they will happen, when the time is right. I never cease to be moved by the power of music to bring people together – into their hearts, bodies, breath and spirit – and I know this is some of the best medicine for our world, now, and always.
I made a video for a song I wrote seven years ago. NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest, and the current political climate inspired me to pull it out for a first-time recording, and create this theatrical rendition of it. (Folk Opera anyone?) It is a song about the power of words. Yes, our very words have the power to create and destroy realities, and human lives. Many spiritual practices recognize the importance of the words we speak. And I hope, especially these days, we can all practice infusing our language with kindness, compassion and love. Let us focus not on the things we are against, but the things we are FOR. As the amazing Dr. MLK said, “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” The paradigm must change!

I am delighted to announce that my Womb Song baby is expanding, and we are adding a second circle each month, now at Luma Yoga & Family Center, on the 1st Sunday of each month. We will also continue to meet on the 3rd Monday of the month at the Pacific Cultural Center. These circles are open to all women who love to sing, but we focus on the path of birth and motherhood, so they are particularly pertinent to those on that journey.
My Womb Song partner, Megan Jacobsmeyer, and I have had the opportunity recently to help lead more baby blessing ceremonies, and they are always just SO beautiful. It is such a gift to step into people’s lives in such an intimate way. Contact me if you are interested in learning more about these for you, friends or family members.
Mark your calendars for my music student recital, and concert. There will be a showcase of some of my music students, followed by a small concert by Yours Truly. This will be at the Pacific Cultural Center from 3:30-5pm, on Saturday March 25th, with a suggested donation of $10 at the door, no one turned away. My private teaching practice continues to expand and strengthen, and I am so grateful I get to share the gift of music, and spend hours so focused in body, breath and heart.
My Spring calendar is already quite full, with three beautiful weddings, and the second annual Song Village. If you missed it last year, and you love to sing, you must check this out – a gathering in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where we come together and just SING! Learn more here:
We are in the beginning stages of planning a Pacific Northwest Tour for the late summer. If you live anywhere between Santa Cruz and Portland and would like to hear us live, let me know! House concerts are a beautiful way to bring people together, right in your living room, and anyone can host one! It’s the magical movement of folk music right now. Hit “reply” and let’s talk.
Well my friends, that’s all she wrote for the February newsletter. Thanks for staying with me until the end! May we keep our hearts open and strong, and live always from a place of LOVE.
In peace & song,
~ Amanda
