 "Handbag of the Month" Gallery-
Congratulations to Dawn King of Hamilton, NJ, the winner of our 1ST EVER Purse Insert of the Year contest! She wins a $25.00 SKD gift certificate and a permanent place of honor on our website. Click here to see her passionately purple Porta-PocketsPLUS purse insert.
Our 2nd-place finisher was this delightful Encore Purse Insert by Tamsyn Mihalus. She wins a 20% off shopping spree on our website, along with ALL of our May entrants, PLUS the chance to win in our annual "Battle of the 2nds" scheduled for December 2013!

The Purse Insert contest was a refreshing change, but now that it's June, we're going back to our usual Handbag of the Month battles with some truly outstanding entries, so without further adieu, check out this month's nominees, then cast a vote for your favorite.
(Click each individual picture for a larger view)

Our 1st entry June is this embroidered eyelet-front Baggalista from Lisa Mechum of Morgan, UT. Lisa said she made this cute little number for a business trip with supplies from her stash while awaiting the release of the Guardian in April. She likes it because it's small enough to carry all the time but big enough for her iPad Mini.

Ann Michel of Winston-Salem, NC said the inspiration for this flower & lace Quattro was actually our April HOM contest! She was making a lace jacket for an upcoming cruise & decided to make a matching bag for the trip. She loves a lot of pockets & a layered look and the Quattro has both! Here's a closeup of the embroidered front and the back!  Bon Voyage Ann!

When Norma Horrell of Roseville, CA was on our site last year, she fell in love with our Quattro and this is actually the 2nd she has made! She appliques the flower onto the front pocket which is perfectly in keeping with the tone of the bag! GREAT job Norma!

Barbara Keith of Milton, FL used home decorating fabrics to put together a perfectly coordinated summer Quattro for herself! She's been sewing and quilting for over 50 years and has found that she really loves making purses too!  This would be a fun bag to carry, don't you think?

And here's inspiration times TWO ! Dianne Adams of Jacksonville, FL so loved one of our Guardian samples that she created a fabulous facsimile, which we LOVE. And then Dianne used our fabric braiding technique sheet to fashion a modern exterior for her 2nd bag! I can't decide which I like best!

Liz Flynn found the fabric for her Trifecta in the LA Fabric district and it made up into a traffic-stopping beauty! Liz cut the front pocket area a bit larger for her own needs and here are two particularly good pictures of the totally unique Trifecta interior, both zipped and unzipped! This bag is gonna look GREAT on you Liz!

And finally, Mary Dinkel of Scottsdale, AZ said this was her test-run on the Quattro! She used left-over fabric & zipper for this bag and even the athletic shoe motif was a test stitch out! Mary loves the size (here's a peek at the back) which she says is perfect for her ever-present iPad and Encore Purse Insert, and now she says, her next sample will be PERFECT! (To that I say, I can't WAIT to see it!)

Bobbin Around the Web- Busy Bee Quilt Designs
As I walked the Spring Quilt Market floor a week or so ago, I was totally drawn in by Busy Bee Quilt Designs booth display. I loved the vintage feel of each piece but found that these quilts also seemed to have a modern twist. I really can't provide you with hotlinks, as this website is not set up that way, but I still think you'll enjoy checking out this site for yourself. Click here to start.  :)

SmileGram-
There was a bit of confusion at the Bass Pro Sporting Goods store this week. When I was ready to pay for my purchases for gun powder and bullets the cashier said, "Strip down, facing me."
Making a mental note to complain to the NRA about the gun control whackos running amok, I did just as she had instructed. After the hysterical shrieking and alarms finally subsided, I found out that she was referring to how to enter my credit card in the reader.

I have been asked to shop elsewhere in the future. They need to make their instructions to us seniors a little clearer!
I STILL DON'T THINK I LOOKED THAT BAD.

This is a TOTALLY eye-opening look at what can comprise 2000 calories. I was ESPECIALLY surprised at what 2000 calories of bacon looks like. (I'm gonna start eating MORE bacon immediately!)  Click HERE to get educated!

Blog of the Month- The Works
If you like give-aways, project ideas, designer interviews and free tutorials, then you need to check out "The Works", the official blog for Clothworks Textiles! There seems to be a near endless supply of creative inspiration on this site. I like this little tutorial for making "Bias Tape Shoelaces". And while you're there, don't forget to "stay in the loop" by checking out their FaceBook page and their newsletter.

Techie Tutorial of the Month- Don't be an IRS Identity Theft Victim!

The numbers are staggering. According to Congress' Government Accountability Office, the IRS detected 642,000 cases of identity theft in the first nine months of 2013, up from 242,000 in all of 2012.

Identity thieves use a taxpayer's identity, stolen by phishing emails or other methods, to fraudulently file a tax return and claim a refund. The legitimate taxpayer may be unaware that anything has happened until they file their return later in the filing season and discover two returns have been filed using the same Social Security number.

What can you do to avoid becoming a target? First, beware of emails that appear to be from the IRS. The IRS does not EVER request personal or financial info by email or social media. The IRS also does not EVER send emails stating you are being electronically audited or that you are getting a refund. If you receive this type of email, you can safely assume it is fake. Ignore it or, better yet, forward it to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.

New Word of the Month- "Snapperwrapper"
(snăp'ər-răp'ər) (n.) An elastic ponytail holder having a plastic ball at each end. The elastic is wrapped around the ponytail and then one ball is snapped in place over the other.

Are you guilty of "racial profiling" when it comes to cats? If you believe that a cat will act a certain way based on breed, then maybe you are. We’ve all heard about "tortitude", snobby white cats, and universally loving tabbies -- but just how true are these behavioral expectations? I suspect that they’re really not as true as most people think, and I know that stereotyping cats based on the color of their fur does more harm than good. How many people turn away from adopting a black cat or an orange tabby female because of what they think they know about how “those cats” act?Click HERE to see a run-down of "Eight Common Kitty Stereotypes".

July 11, 2012  The Oregonian
Shelly Figueroa (Figgy's Patterns) isn't limited to what a handful of big-box retailers, with their racks of fluorescent-lit garments, decide Americans should wear.
Instead, the Lake Oswego pattern designer makes clothes at home or at a sewing circle where friends sip wine as their machines hum into the dusk on shirts, as well as bags and quilts.

Monthly Trivia-
So... today is June 8th, the 159th day of 2013, and just in case you're counting, there's only 206 days remaining in this year.
And if you've been catching a whiff of burnt candle wax, it's probably because 3 of vintage public figures are celebrating their birthdays today! There's bound to be a big party in Kennebunkport today as former 1st Lady Barbara Bush commemorates her 88th, and meanwhile on our west coast, talk show host Joan Rivers will be blowing out 76 candles today. Maybe she'll invite Jerry Stiller over since they share their special day.
And if today is also your birthday, then here's a great BIG "Happy Birthday to YOU" from StudioKat Designs, and if today is not your birthday, (and odds are it isn't), you can celebrate the day anyway by watching this little clip of one of my favorite scenes featuring Jerry Stiller, from one of my favorite old TV shows, Seinfeld.  :)

Well, that's it for now, so until next month, remember!
Sewing Forever, Housework Whenever!
