REACH - The Impact on Obsolescence


Some of you may have already heard of the REACH regulation – The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of CHemicals.  It came into force in 2007, however, following engagement with the Chamber of Commerce and some of our customers at recent client forums, CMCA(UK) has found that much of the industry outside of the chemicals business is not fully aware of what it represents and what its implications are. We believe that the legislation could potentially be a ‘ticking time bomb’ for the industry as many manufacturers and support agencies are currently unaware of the full implications and what REACH will mean to them.
CMCA(UK) are working with two Prime Defence Contractors to manage their BOMs for REACH,  where in conjunction with standard component monitoring, REACH BoM sweeps will be undertaken and data will be gathered on the full Materials Declaration for the given components. This will enable us to build a complete REACH picture for any given sub-assembly in a hierarchical structure that can then be monitored as the Candidate List is updated and as the composition of the components themselves is changed.

CMCA(UK)'s Technical Expertise Expanded
Steve Rye
Steve Rye joins CMCA(UK) within our Obsolescence Management Services Team. With almost 30 years experience performing all manner of OM duties, Steve is no stranger to the field and is an expert in the rapid development of OM related tools and processes.
Steve will be instrumental in all aspects of in-house software development, as well as supporting Q-STAR product development as part of the business alliance that that exists between CMCA(UK) and QTEC Solutions. 
His skills and experience will prove invaluable to CMCA(UK) and his appointment represents a further step to enabling the company to meet its strategic aspirations for 2014 and beyond.

Delivering customer satisfaction is our number one priority and it’s therefore essential that we understand our client’s obsolescence support needs to enable us to continually develop innovative and progressive solutions. With this in mind, CMCA(UK) held a Client forum where one of the aims was to share what CMCA(UK) are doing to help mitigate the obsolescence risk and to explain the resources and processes we employ in doing so.
The forum was also a great opportunity for us to provide an insight into new products and services on our horizon. Of equal importance was the chance to share best practice, personal experience and innovation to holistically overcome the challenges met when dealing with obsolescence.

CMCA(UK)'s Tobacco Engagement is smoking! 


CMCA(UK) is continuing to engage with the 4 main tobacco manufacturers as part of a strategy to introduce strategic and tactical obsolescence management across the industry. As part of this ongoing engagement Our Obsolescence Strategy Advisor was invited to attend the annual Tobacco Colloquium in Germany to present details to the industry OEMs on the obsolescence management activities being undertaken within the working group. Over the next few months CMCA(UK) will facilitate a series of workshops between the tobacco manufacturers and their OEMs to embed the obsolescence management initiative into the commercial and technical functions across the supply chain. We look forward to providing our readers with further updates in due course….

CMCA(UK) have a new section on the website dedicated to their growing exposure in the press. Towards the end of last year our very own Obsolescence Strategy Advisor, Darren Topley featured in Electronics Sourcing Magazine UK presenting a client case study, discussing the topic of Obsolescence Management . CMCA(UK) has been directly involved in providing obsolescence management advice and support services to a number of organisations in Australia. Furthermore, we are  continuing to invest time and resources to ensure we can meet the growing needs for obsolescence management within Australia. 
During a recent 3 week visit CMCA(UK) were involved in a number of strategic discussions with various companies, whilst our Mascot Brindley spread the CMCA(UK) word at the Ashes.
