Next week sees the world premiere of BPS member, Steve Taylor's talk entitled Boots and Cameras in the Far South.
Steve's description of the talk is as follows:
I always carry a camera on my walks. Sometimes it’s two cameras and for special locations, I have been known to carry three! And walking for me often means walking in hills and mountains. On Wednesday evening, I’ll share with you the results of all this effort with a selection of photographs from our 2024 and 2025 trips to Chile, Argentina and Bolivia. In the Patagonian Andes, we climbed to a frozen lake below the stunning skyline of Mount Fitzroy and walked the three-day W-trek around the Torres del Paine.
|
|
Further north, we travelled from the lunar landscapes of the Atacama Desert to the otherworldly volcanic vistas of the Bolivian altiplano and the vast white expanse of the Uyuni salt flats. We trekked for four days from the dry, cactus strewn mountains of the eastern Argentinian Andes to the deep river gorges of the cloud forest. Naturally, landscapes make up a large part of tonight’s talk but there are surprises along the way from a train cemetery in Bolivia to the amazingly varied wildlife of the Ibera Wetlands in Argentina and we round off the evening at the mighty Iguazu Falls, the world’s largest waterfall system.

The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 8 June at 7.30pm.
This is an early call for images as I am on holiday from 21 May for 2 weeks so would like to collate the image slideshow before I leave.
If you would like to share your images at the June meeting, please send them to me at dig@bristolphoto.org.uk ideally by Friday 15 May or the very latest Sun 17 May. Any images sent later than this will not be picked up until I get back.
Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the files to a manageable size. If you could please restrict the number of images to a maximum of 30 this will ensure that we enjoy a wide variety of subjects.
I look forward to receiving your images.
Meetings are informal and take place at the clubhouse and via zoom.
Rachel Domleo.

The closing date for
the Annual Print
Competition is Wednesday,
27 May. There will be a box for your entries on the stage in Unit
13.
The competition will
be judged this year by Sue Sibley FIPF ARPS EFIAP/g DPAGB BPE5* from Southampton.
You may submit up to 4
prints and can use images already used in the bi-monthly competitions. But do
not use images which you have already submitted for this year’s Annual PDI
competition or which have gained awards in previous Annual Print
competitions.
If you want to put any
of your prints in for the open Nature section, tick the appropriate box on
the print label.
In addition to the
usual awards at each level, the judge will select the Best Travel, People,
Action, Landscape and Monochrome pictures from the whole entry (i.e. all
levels).
Please number your
entries in your preferred order, as some images may be culled if the total
entry is excessive.
IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to upload digital copies of your prints if
you have not done so already for previous competitions. These should be the
same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there will be no
need to give any other information than your name and the actual title of
each image. Do, please, give the actual image titles, not just the
image codes. Here is the upload link: www.bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload
We look forward to
seeing your prints!

Distinctions Advisory Meeting |
MONDAY - ALL ARE WELCOME
The next meeting will be held on Monday 11 May at the Clubrooms and is open to ALL members.
For those of you who are unaware of the distinctions available, there are basically two types:
- Those where you have to produce a panel or set of pictures.
This is the case for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), The Photographic Alliance (PAGB) and the Welsh Federation (WPF). For the RPS and WPF the work has to form a panel. For the PAGB, the work does not have to be related, and the pictures are assessed separately.
For the RPS awards you have to be a member of the RPS. This costs £130 per year (£98 if you are over £65). The RPS has different categories of awards, and we can advise on these. This is why the PAGB awards are so popular as you only pay an entry fee.
- Those where distinctions are awarded for the number of pictures accepted in approve National and international exhibitions.
These exhibitions are approved by the PAGB for national exhibitions, Federation de L’Art Photographic (FIAP) and The Photographic Society of America (PSA), for International Exhibitions These days FIAP mostly dominate the Internationals, and their awards are very popular.
BPS Advice Meetings
Andrew Marker, Ralph Snook and I offer advice as to how approach an entry for these distinctions. We do not expect you to have a fully worked out entry and like to see work in progress.
We are also able to offer more detailed advice on pictures than is provided by our Club competitions, as judges' advice is limited by the large entry and limited time available.
So, if you want opinions on pictures, bring them along.
If you wish to show DPIs, please let me know.
Peter McCloskey FRPS

Those of you who have attended Wednesday meetings over the last couple of weeks may have noticed some shiny new studio lights hanging out of the ceiling in the studio area - this is because Mike Martin and Steve Field have been out spending some of the Society's hard earned shekels and have replaced the lights that have been in place since we moved into Unit 13 back in 2015, and were beginning to show signs of age and in some cases failing.
The next couple of meetings will be centred around members getting familiar with the new equipment:
Monday 11 May – 10am-1pm.... Familiarisation with the new studio equipment
Monday 18 May – 10am-1pm.... Familiarisation with the new studio equipment
Monday 25 May – Spring Bank Holiday – No Meeting

BPS member, Sue O'Connell has been featured in the latest edition of Amateur Photographer magazine, where she has a four page spread about her travel photography. I've reproduced the first page below, but if you are in T G Jones (other newsagents are available) this weekend, it might well be worth buying a copy to read the full article - I do appreciate that the concept of "buying" AP could be an anathema to some members, but you could just stand in front of the magazine rack and read it there for nothing!

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions,
it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know
so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that
you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER. |
