Charlotte OC
Eat Your Own Ears presents

If the tremendously talented Banks made grandiose dance pop songs, they would sound an awful lot like the music of Charlotte OC, who has a similar flair for haunting melodies and insightful lyrics. “If my house was burning / Would you run or stay?” she asks during the lead track “If My House Was Burning,” which will either have you bouncing around, dancing with fervor, or render you perfectly still, following the lyrics closely. It especially reminds me of Florence + The Machine’s danceable tracks like “Dog Days Are Over” and “Shake It Out.” And it should come as no surprise that it’s killer: production was handled by Rich Cooper (Banks, Friends), Paul O’Duffy (Amy Winehouse) and Tim Anderson (Solange, Sia).
Charlotte received heaps of praise upon the release of her previous EP, Strange, with the song “Hangover” being added to BBC Radio 1’s prestigious Introducing Playlist, which is not easy to get on; it’s reserved for the best of the best new artists. Due to the popularity of “Hangover,” she found herself performing at Gucci’s Frieze Art Fair London, which took place at the Italian Embassy. More recently, Charlotte toured Australia for the first time as support for Temper Trap at sell out shows. She additionally performed at Sydney’s Field Day Festival, which also featured talented cats like Alt J, Danny Brown and SBTRKT.
The first B-side on the Burning EP is a song produced by the above-mentioned Rich Cooper called “On & On.” It is a sultry number featuring mature lyrics and serious beats along with gorgeous piano and Charlotte’s mesmerizing and emotive vocals. “Blood rush, lighten me up / Your skin, fire / Now smoke is filling my lungs / My heart is tired,” she sings with pain in her voice, like she’s tearing up as she sings it. It continues, “But we wait / Keep on telling ourselves / To keep on pushing when it hurts like hell / And it hurts like hell.” It’s highly potent stuff, like Lorde on steroids.
The remaining two tracks are remixes of “If My House Was Burning.” Up first is the “Harrison Remix,” which blends sonorous EDM-style beats with funky bass and ’80’s style synth. The vocal samples are chopped up, stuttered and sexed up, making the song come across like a big come on. Ultimately, it’s a little boring if I’m being entirely honest. But the Folded Like Fabric remix leads with the vocals before the punched up beats kick in. Although said beats aren’t quite 2 Step, they do remind me of MJ Cole tracks from the ’90’s. To that end, the tone of the beats here, and the way they interact with the vocals, also reminds me of Eric Kupper remixes from the ’90’s. It’s like one of MJ Cole’s original songs as remixed by Cooper with Charlotte’s vocals added to the mix. Quite lovely, really. – Love Is Pop.com

For 28-year-old singer-songwriter Sarah Jaffe, 2014’s Don’t Disconnect is both a mission statement and a call to arms — an album about getting to know yourself in a hyperconnected world that makes it nearly impossible to do just that. The highly anticipated follow-up to The Body Wins continues to showcase Jaffe’s range; released August 19th, 2014 on Kirtland, it was produced by Midlake’s McKenzie Smith, whose “amazing partnership,” Jaffe enthuses, was “like two friends in the studio” — a warmness that bleeds through to the record, despite the technological connotations of its title. If The Body Wins emphasized the triumph of the corporeal — in metaphors and direct references to “the body” — then Don’t Disconnect is about the humanity and vulnerability that lies within. Ultimately, the desire to stay connected in the right way — with yourself, and with the people who matter — is what drives the album.

HORSE LORDS make music with guitar, bass, drums, and sometimes saxophone, but you couldn’t really call what they do rock music. Rock is just a small piece of the greater amalgamation—a simple-yet-complex affair that welds repetitive riffing in strange time signatures to microtonal harmonies that glint like flecks of mica. It might be tempting to call it math rock, but these aren’t problems to be solved—they’re patterns that unfold as if of their own accord. The Baltimore band has released two albums up to this point, both of which alternate switchbacking studies in rhythm and drone with noisy, knotty studio experiments. They’ve also released three freeform “mixtapes” containing sidelong collages of full-throttle rave-ups, modular synth sketches, and live recordings whose audio fidelity suggests that they may have been recorded to a Dictaphone at the bottom of someone’s gym bag. New album ‘Interventions’, on Northern Spy Records, marks a major step forward in every way: The jams are both more focused and more hypnotic, while the quality of the recordings has a newfound clarity and fullness that does wonders for the music. Guitarist Owen Gardner and bassist Max Eilbacher play instruments re-fretted according to the principles of just intonation, and their curious tuning—intermingled with saxophonist Andrew Bernstein’s complementary bleat—yields an unusual and visceral sound. It’s subtle, but you can feel it vibrating in the air all around you. The band’s Northern Spy debut is also the first Horse Lords album to explore the classic studio-as-weaponry strategies of yore, mapping the quartet’s raw Baltimore lightning onto the experimental musique concrète territory surveyed by elder heads like Faust and This Heat. Floating at the boundaries of composition and improvisation, electronics and performance, the underground and the vast improbable 21st century indie mainstream, Horse Lords exist in none of these places and all of them.

M. Craft – Following his third album Blood Moon, released to much acclaim earlier this year, Heavenly’s M.Craft completes the line-up for the final [PIAS] Nites event of the year. Having decamped to a log cabin on the edge of the Mojave desert, Craft discovered that isolation loves a soundtrack and Blood Moon is a score for seclusion. Inspired by witnessing the titular lunar event twice during his stint as a desert resident, the album propagated in a  nearby Los Angeles studio, unstructured, experimental piano pieces evolved into the album once back in his desert setting. Occasionally echoing the ghost forms of Talk Talk’s peerless Laughing Stock and the hymnal beauty of Sufjan Steven’s Seven Swans, the music is mainly Craft’s own unique meditation.
PAVO PAVO
Newly signed to Bella Union, this experimental pop band from New York unveil their debut album Young Narrator In The Breakers in November. The quintet came together whilst at Yale, studying music with its various members having worked closely with a variety of musical heavyweights such as john Zorn, Here We Go Magic. Lucius, Dave Longstreth and San Fermin whilst coming together as Pavo Pavo, guitar stabs, washed out harmonies, and rumbling synthesisers come and go like the tides of the ocean, the music moves with symphonic elegance that has been  hailed  as “weightless pop music that sounds like it was beamed down from a glimmering utopian future”.

J.BERNARDT
The new solo project from Balthazar’s Jinte Duprez under the nom de plume J.Bernhardt and thus described in a recent interview ; “The whole project is more personal in a way that reflects my philosophy about music. I really love the primitive groove thing about being a human being. You’re very much related with beats and grooves. The backings and everything on the album  it’s all very gospel soul related. It’s very monotone.“  J. Bernhardt’s debut album will be released through Play It Again Sam next year.

Into It. Over It., aka Chicago’s Evan Weiss, today shares the video for ‘No EQ’, one of the most immediately infectious highlights drawn from his recently released third album proper, Standards (out now on Triple Crown Records).
The clip follows a cavalcade of characters and the adventures that ensue as they don identikit, mail-order Evan Weiss outfits. Each package contains everything you’d ever need to be the very best Chicagoan indie-rock linchpin you can possibly be: flannel shirt no matter what the weather? Check! Thick-rimmed glasses? Double-check! Fake tattoo sleeve? Buddy, you’d better believe it!
It features a number of Weiss’ local friends, who all pitched in to create the wonderful weirdness it turned into. Speaking of the video, Weiss says: “My friends in Chicago rallied around to create a beautiful (and weird in all my favorite ways) music video,” before going on to call it “a buffalo plaid nightmare.”

It comes alongside news that Weiss will be returning to the UK for another run of full-band shows following on from his hugely successful co-headline tour with the Hotelier in the spring of 2016. The autumn dates include continental appearances in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic, before Weiss returns to the UK for a handful of dates that include a special treat for long-time fans. Across his three London shows, Weiss will be performing special curated sets covering the vast majority of his already bulging back catalogue, with nights including full performances of Standards, alongside its predecessors, Intersections and Proper, as well as an assortment of EPs and rare tracks. It’s a not-to-be-missed opportunity for fans to be reminded of just how much vital music he’s been behind over the past nigh-on decade, as well as a drool-inducing chance to catch those deep cuts you thought you might never see in the live setting.

Upset The Rhythm presents…

TIM PRESLEY (White Fence)
THE WHARVES
ALEX DINGLEY

TIM PRESLEY is a man in a glass booth, grabbing at scraps of paper blown at his windscreen as if they were of the greatest value. They’re actually of the only value. And we grin in delight in his twist and tumult; in this process, he’s assembling his tunes in essential fashion, rolling around in the dust of his Id-bowl, then reordering the scrambled head-events into a barrage of phrases and stages, flickering through disembodied and re-embodied moments, held together by Tim’s inviolable belief in the song progression underneath. The tension is unbreakable, a thin plastic slip, as he intones upon a maze of high wild mercury stings. On the cover of his new album on Drag City, you see a bare chest and bits of bodies sketched in ragged lines of black and white. Inside, in full calor, we find Tim Presley. The dark force behind White Fence, Drinks, Hair and Darker My Love stepping into the solo light with ‘The WiNK’. When you tune in to ‘The WiNK’, it takes a couple minutes for you to hear a word. But then it takes only one line until “and then you die,” uttered in a voice of mottled, throaty horror, as if ghosts that haven’t yet shown themselves are advancing through walls. Working with the creative team of producer Cate Le Bon, drummer Stella Mozgawa, and engineer Samur Khouja, Tim’s located the corners of a perfect square, with their creativity and truth crafting unique parts to function as songs within songs, giving the tunes double-jointed features that extend their original intentions. The Presley guitar hand has a powerful, yet quicksilver touch, with metallic brilliance always, especially in rhythm figurations, where it wrings chords out like panic signals, highlighting ‘Can You Blame’, ‘Long Bow’, ‘Underwater Rain’ and ‘Clue’ (to name a few), and a cover version of Willie “Loco” Alexander’s ‘Kerouac’ (nod and a wink!), where a smooth and steadfast lyric melody is supplanted by a throw of broken guitar and shards of keys. Throughout ‘The WiNK’, Tim’s tone is thin and princely, connecting the dots sideways and backwards to align and make the image emerge.
http://www.dragcity.com/artists/tim-presley

THE WHARVES combine gracefully minimal psyche-rock with fuzzed out folk. Their songwriting remains consistently rich, largely due to the startling harmonies of Gemma Fleet (bass) and Dearbhla Minogue (guitar) that bond together each song. They invoke the reverberated spook of 60s girl groups, the mid-fi guitar crunch of Kim Deal’s The Amps, the vocal flavours of The Roches and the narrative and structural panache of 70s progressive folk. Marion Andrau’s thunderous drumming drives through these compositions, ensuring the wealth of disparate influences remain focused and celebratory. Brand new album, Electa, builds on last year’s ‘Naz’ 7″ on Upset the Rhythm, refining their distinctive sound with increasingly notable elements of heavy rock and folk. Three part vocal harmonies remain staple to the format, underpinning their progressive instrumental step-up.
https://thewharves.bandcamp.com/

ALEX DINGLEY traveled from West Wales’ Llansteffan to California’s West Coast to make his forthcoming album, Beat The Babble, with Tim Presley, Cate Le Bon and Samur Khouja. He took it on the road supporting Le Bon on her May UK tour and early next year Presley will release it on Birth Records.

Mercury nominated and critically acclaimed folk artist Kathryn Williams has teamed up with revered jazz musician and vibraphone player Anthony Kerr, to create an album of complete re-imaginings of classic jazz standards, including brand new single ‘Autumn Leaves’. Previously performed by greats such as Eva Cassidy, Doris Day, Edith Piaf and Frank Sinatra, Kathryn and Anthony’s version of the infamous song is hushed and delicate – Williams’ signature vocal tip-toes over lush, rich vibraphones.

A SPECIAL SHOW TO LAUNCH STATS’ DEBUT ALBUM ‘TEMPING’
London funk punks Stats and Park Hotel have put together a special Lexington show launching Stats’ debut album ‘Temping’. Elly Jackson of La Roux, who sang on Stats’ debut EP ‘Where Is The Money’, and whose song ‘Cruel Sexuality’ Stats remixed in turn, will be DJing rare disco.
MORE INFORMATION:
STATS
“the slinky-sexy halfway point between Bowie, Talking Heads, early Duran Duran, and Clor” – Noisey
Stats are a minimal-maximal pop band of five people in London, led by Ed Seed (musician with La Roux, Dua Lipa). The band are launching ‘TEMPING’, a nine-song dance-punk debut LP, about private parties and ring roads and unwanted babies. Cassette tape albums with download codes will be sold exclusively at this night.
“Stats are good at invoking edge and nervous tension and turning these sensations into catchy pop. This is superb” – Guardian
“inventive and insightful” – Wonderland
“A smart band of never-before seen colours” – The 405
PARK HOTEL are an immaculate dance act. Tim Abbey and Rebecca Marcos-Roca are a post- electronic studio duo that becomes a six-piece neo-funk band live. They’re going public with first release ‘Gone As A Friend’ in February 2017, following feverishly-received London debut shows.

Permanent Vacation presents
When: 23/11/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £6
Ticket Link: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/371733
The Hanging Stars were an epiphany visited upon the rain soaked air of England’s green and pleasant land, becoming whole, tangible and real in the Californian desert.
There they formed there mix of lush harmonies, cosmic americana and tuneful folk creating something halfway between the Mississippi and the Mersey, the desert’s beating sun and the dark skies of London. Their sound is something timeless and yet somehow new, simultaneously nostalgic and prophetic.
They vary in number, yet wherever they go they carry the rain and the sand with them.
“a hazy, desert-dream of a song, nicely sharpened with steely-eyed guitars, Mersey-laced harmonies and just a whiff of the Gun Club.”
– Guardian
“Swampy psychedelia that recalls the Medway Delta as much as the Mississippi, the band’s new single neatly conjoins these influences.”
– Clash
“You might recognise members of the See See and Coastguards within the ranks of this group but Hanging Stars are trippier that their parent bands – or more “cosmicious”, as they describe themselves on Facebook. A brilliant debut for fans of melted country and acid psych.”
– Sounds XP

When: 24/11/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £7, mems £5

BLACK DYLAN [DEN]

Black Dylan is the cutting-edge new duo with a sound conceived in France, delivered in Denmark and set to thrill funk, R&B and hip-hop fans the world over.
The group features platinum-selling Danish star Wafande and his longtime collaborator and countryman Nuplex, aka Mikkel Andreas Thomsen. Their album may be titled Hey Stranger, but Wafande and Nuplex’s combined wealth of studio, songwriting and stage experience has the warm and familiar ambience of the influences they share, from Marvin Gaye to Sly and the Family Stone to French hip-hop.
But that’s all combined with an original, dark and edgy approach that sounds distinctly like the future of streetwise soul.
SÍSÝ EY [ICE]
Sísý Ey is a band founded in 2011 by Carmen Jóhannsdóttir who had previously worked with Elín Ey. The idea was to get Elín Ey and her two sisters, Elísabet Eyþórsdóttir and Sigríður Eyþórsdóttir, to sing live house music and to not only bring their voices into new territory, but also use their abilities in different context as they all have more acoustic-driven music careers.
After spending some time scouting for “the one” to work with, the missing link was found in Oculus, a producer and a DJ. The main focus of the band has been live performances. Although Sísý Ey’s music has just begun taking its first steps, the band has many releases on the horizon and gotten unbelievable attention for their music and performances.
https://soundcloud.com/platform/sisy-ey-do-it-good-boiler-room-debuts
DEATH BY UNGA BUNGA [NOR]
2016 looks like being Death By Unga Bunga’s most prolific year so far. After ‘Pineapple Pizza’ was released earlier this year, the band have mainly been on the road, and especially in the US. The Americans welcomed them with open arms, and they were added by more than one hundred radio stations. This made them one of the most played bands on American college radio. Their fans are screaming for more, and that’s just what DBUB intend to give them!
A common misconception is that DBUB are leaning heavily on the retro rock trend, and in particular good old garage rock. It’s been a while since the boys listed The Sonics as their main source of inspiration, and people who have followed the band the last couple of years obviously know that they’ve grown to become one of Norway’s best power pop/-rock bands. And let it be said: Not many bands make cooler riffs and choruses than DBUB right now.

By 2015, when the band self-produced their debut EP, Kiss the Sun, Con Brio had already become a West Coast institution on the strength of their magnetic live show, with McCarter’s swiveling hips, splits and backflips earning him frequent comparisons to a young Michael Jackson or James Brown.

Arrows Of Love (single launch), Melt Dunes, Martin Tomlinson
Club Mammoth Christmas Party presents
When: 08/12/2016 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £5.50
Ticket Link: https://www.songkick.com/store/events/28409489
Arrows Of Love, the 5-piece led by co-writers Nima and Nuha, have gone through many transitions over the years, a group that resembles more of a collective than a band. Having met through a lifestyle of artistic warehouse communities, Arrows are a constantly evolving force led by fiercely energetic live shows and wildly inventive songwriting. Having settled on their current line-up to release their second album, ?PRODUCT’, they recently found themselves backed by the UK’s highly competitive PRS Momentum Music Fund and after accepting an invite from CMJ Music Marathon the band confirmed a string of US dates followed by a support slot with post-punk legends The Fall.
Arrows Of Love are, above all, a live phenomenon. Originally aligned with the early East London wave of bohemian rock bands, it was their fiercely independent and creative drive that has taken them across the globe, to the likes of SXSW and End of the Road, to sharing stages with the likes of Buzzcocks, British Sea Power, 80’s Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The King Blues and many more. Working to cut this live intensity to record is producer Mikko Gordon (Thom Yorke, Gaz Combes), and Bob Weston of Shellac, who are both working with the band to bring their upcoming album to life.
Gearing up for the release of ?PRODUCT’, the band are set to prove themselves the real deal. Drawing comparisons to the discordant, emotive musicianship of Sonic Youth to the raw power of McClusky, this second LP sees a band fully diversified, ready to release something truly unique.

Ticket Link: https://billetto.co.uk/en/events/slowcoaches-live-at-the-lexington
Slowcoaches set out on tour to celebrate the release of their Debut album; the fast, furious, clatteringly majestic and downright fun ‘Nothing Gives’. The album details all the bad shit that happens in life: break-ups, breakdowns, a pre-mid life crisis, a drug induced mental illness, falling out with friends, getting way too wrecked, losing your job then desperately trying to find a job… the list goes on. However, for the listener who doesn’t quite fancy ending up in a dark pit of despair after listening, the record makes for a surprisingly upbeat collection.
Crazy things happen at Slowcoaches shows. When the London based slack metal trio aren’t rocking up to women-only biker festivals out in the wilds of Wales, they’re laying critter-infested Hackney Wick warehouses to waste or causing grown men to concussed vomit all over the stag.
A tongue in cheek attitude pervades not just their live show, but the album too. See,Slowcoaches don’t wallow in their misery, they dress it up with huge riffs and full-throttle power pop panache.
Think the grubby grunge of Mudhoney and early punk of The Germs meeting 1970s LA icons The Nerves and the sassy stance of Babes In Toyland down a dark alley somewhere in east London and you’re halfway there.
Slowcoaches join us Live at the Lexington is 18+ and followed by a clubnight till 4am!

Yes – that’s THE Trev and Simon!
Our super best pals Helen Love are back in London Town to celebrate Christmas, and bring their veritable style of legendary punk pop glory to the Lex once more – and we’d love you to come party with us… Their last album ‘Smash Hits’ was basically the best thing since sliced bread (everyone said so, not just us) – and so we want them to come play live again. HURRAH!
In support (and i can’t quite believe we got this) are f**king Trev and Simon! The legendary British comedy duo who rocked the worlds of Live & Kicking and Going Live in the 90’s. GOD KNOWS what they’re going to be doing it, but they’ll OBVIOUSLY be awesome. They’ll be some other awesome bands on too – but we can’t tell you about them yet.
You can buy a ticket for just £12.50 if you like, or with a limited Helen Love tote bag (featuring the poster design) for £16. That’s £3.50 for an awesome tote. DO IT! xxx

X-Posure Live with Shock Machine
X-Posure Live is the regular new music night which is hosted by the Radio X legend that is John Kennedy at The Lexington in London.

Shock Machine is the first solo project from Mercury Prize winning, BRIT Award and Ivor Novello nominated songwriter James Righton, who previously fronted the genre-defining group, Klaxons.

‘Shock Machine’, the beautiful, eponymous introduction to this new project, was recorded in a cabin in the south of France with the help of producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence + The Machine, Haim) and mixed in Atlanta by Ben H Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter). It’s the first track from Shock Machine’s forthcoming debut  ‘Open Up The Sky’ EP, a collection of timeless pop music that embraces inspiration from decades of off-kilter greats – from Todd Rundgren and Dennis Wilson, to early Paul McCartney – evolving influences into one of 2016’s most vital debut releases.

Manchester’s The Underground Youth hail is the solo project of Craig Dyer. A strong believer in DIY ethos, Dyer writes and records all of the music himself, and his creative process dines heavily on experimentation and the influence of literature, cinema and poetry. The process is clearly fruitful boasting a discography of seven LP’s and 3 EP’s, each delving into different sonic terrains within the psych landscape through psychedelia, shoegaze, blues and post-punk.
In 2012, after signing to Fuzz Club, The Underground Youth fleshed out to a full band including Dyer’s wife and celebrated artist Olya Dyer on drums, Frankie Frankie of Fuzz Club’s Throw Down Bones on guitar, and Max James – whose past experience includes Johnny Marr’s live band – on bass.
Since then the group have been touring relentlessly, playing sold-out shows all over Europe and landing significant spots on some of Europe’s biggest psych festivals including Cosmosis, Liverpool Psych Fest and Eindhoven Psych Lab.

“They’ve been squirrelled away in the studio for quite some time with their pals Fryars, and last year shared a preview of their second album, ‘Something Good’. Now, it looks like the follow-up to their 2013 debut is taking proper shape.
Skipping headily along in a cheery mist of falsetto, ‘You Are Real’ is the first single to come from their forthcoming second record. “I figured it out,” goes the refrain, flying atop strutting bass-lines, and sly injections of synth. Aiming for soaring pop twist-turns, it’s one of Theme Park’s boldest efforts to date.” – DIY

The celebrated TV Theme Tune covers band, who are rapidly growing in popularity following a number of lauded television and festival performances, present a sort of concert-come-panto thing, here at the Lexington, a week before Christmas!
As backing band for the late, great, papier-mache-headed legend Frank Sidebottom, the group originally played the theme to Terry & June while Frank did the raffle. Somewhat inevitably, one could argue, one thing led to another and the band now perform a host of classic TV tunes from Bergerac to Crimewatch and the News at Ten via Strictly Come Dancing.
Now currently enjoying a huge rise in popularity thanks to some celebrated performances in 2015, including one on ITV’s Paul O’Grady Show and another at Bestival – not to mention an appearance on BBC4 in the last ever live broadcast from BBC Television Centre as part of Richard DeDomenici’s genius venture ‘The Redux Project’ – Dream Themes mix up costume changes, onstage arguments and audience games with telly tunes both new and old.

The Montecristos Rock 'n' Roll Christmas
Surf, Glam, Rock 'n' Roll
When: 22/12/2016 07:00 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £15
Ticket Link: https://www.wegottickets.com/event/375537
And it shakes you up; like the screech of a Cadillac tearing out of nowhere… The forever marriage of the primitive and sophisticated that is rock ‘n’ roll.
The Montecristos are reinventing the shimmer and the throb, the tingle of illicit pleasure awakened by the sin-drenched echo of 1950’s guitars. The Montecristos are the midnight soundtrack for Jayne Mansfield; hips swaying like a storm at sea knocking at the Green Door of all your rock ‘n’ roll dreams.
At the helm is Neal X – former guitarist of million-selling, futuristic glam-rock potentates, Sigue Sigue Sputnik and long-term sideman of electro-burlesque starman Marc Almond.
Once renowned for the biggest quiff in London, Neal has always stayed true to the seamy essence of the originators: “I’m still totally head over leopard-print high heels in love with Rock ‘n’ Roll. I wanted to form a band that took the energy and spirit of Little Richard in ‘The Girl Can’t Help It’ and make it look and sound totally contemporary for the 21st Century. Glammy, trashy, classy and sexy Rock ‘n’ Roll – driven by my fist sized overactive adrenal gland.”
Indefatigable in his pursuit, Neal has gathered about him a glamorous and musically astute coterie of players.
Ice Queen Emma Goss, a mean, slapping Double Bass virtuoso who never loses her cool or class when the fever rises.
Luscious Gemma B whose trumpet playing rips the rafters off the joint.
Sultry Sophie Freeman who uses her saxophone as a torch to the flame of rock ‘n’ roll.
Exotic Orlando La Rose, a blast of pleasure from beyond midnight, on baritone sax
Dexterous, debonair drummer and percussionist extraordinaire Hugh Wilkinson who effortlessly evinces rhythm’s primal thrall.
The last two years have seen The Montecristos on a stealth mission, gathering speed, poised to strike. Having made their debut in Andrés Dussan’s 2014 movie ‘Down Dog’ they commenced gigging in the UK and Spain to a rapturous response. Sidestepping a record industry that has purged rock ‘n’ roll from their books The Montecristos launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise £5,000 to make their album. They raised almost double faster than the roll of a dice.

Ultimate Painting
No one could ever accuse Ultimate Painting of self-indulgence. Across three albums – their 2014 self-titled debut, 2015’s Green Lanes and the recently released Dusk – songwriters/guitarists Jack Cooper and James Hoare have defined a compellingly particular, art-pop sound that marries the wiry minimalism of Velvet Underground’s third LP with the jangling drive of Flying Nun flagship acts like The Chills and The Beatles’ dreamy melodicism. There are echoes of their respective former bands, Mazes and Veronica Falls, but as Ultimate Painting, economy of both music and lyrics is key to producing work that is coolly economical, understatedly intimate and with pop poise by the crate load.
“Both Mazes and Veronica Falls have made outstanding albums before, but this is surely the best record either Hoare or Cooper have been involved with. Every arrangement is perfect for the melody, and every melody sticks: together they’re perfect.” (The Guardian)
http://ultimatepainting.band
The Wharves
Hailing from Ireland, France and England The Wharves sport startling duel vocals, courtesy of Gemma Fleet (bass) and Dearbhla Minogue (guitar), which hang gracefully over their minimal rock format. Combining gracefully minimal psyche-rock with fuzzed out folk, they invoke the reverberated spook of 60’s girl groups, the mid-fi guitar crunch of Kim Deal’s The Amps, the vocal flavours of The Roches and the narrative and structural panache of 70’s progressive folk. Marion Andrau’s thunderous drumming drives through these compositions, ensuring the wealth of disparate influences remain focused and celebratory. Their second long-player Electa is released via Gringo Records on November 4th.
“A lush mix of gently psychedelic folk-influenced music without losing sight of the pop sensibilities of ’60s girl-groups and garage rock.” (The 405)
https://thewharves.bandcamp.com
Girl Ray
A North London trio who deal in fuzzy pop gems, Girl Ray shape their love of off-kilter pop bands such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Pavement and Cate Le Bon in to a sound that feels instantly familiar and completely lovable. Single “Trouble” is released on Nov 25th via the Moshi Moshi Singles Club.
“‘Trouble’ is sweet and lo-fi, and reminiscent of The Pipettes, Veronica Falls and Cate Le Bon, maybe even a bit of Whitney. All promising signs for their debut album, which will be released next year.” (Loud & Quiet)

Martha
Hailing from Pity Me near Durham, Martha play energetic, impassioned power pop with intricate vocal interplay and lush four-part harmonies, informed by 90s indie rock and Scandinavian anarcho punk. The band is comprised of J. Cairns (guitar), Daniel Ellis (guitar), Naomi Griffin (bass), and Nathan Stephens Griffin (drums). All four members sing and write the songs. Daniel and Nathan also play in Onsind, while Naomi also plays in No Ditching. Their debut album “Courting Strong”, produced by MJ from Hookworms, came out in 2014 and was included in NPR’s top 50 albums of that year, winning them the epithet “One of Britain’s best rock bands”. Following a Glastonbury appearance last year at the personal invitation of Billy Bragg, the this year took to the stage at the End Of The Road festival. Their second album “Blisters In The Pit Of My Heart” was released via Fortuna POP! on July 8th.
“Martha are one of the most thrilling and likeable bands to emerge from the North East in god knows how many years… Courting Strong is just fantastic”. (Drowned In Sound)
https://www.facebook.com/marthadiy
Radiator Hospital
Grand Rapids, Michigan songwriter Sam Cook-Parrot started Radiator Hospital as an outlet for his highly romantic and often noisy punk-bred pop songs. Inspired as much by the home-recording aesthetic and acoustic guitar twee punk of the K Records scene built around its more voluminous sects of full-band power pop, the first Radiator Hospital cassette materialized in January of 2010. In September of 2012, Cook-Parrot relocated to Philadelphia, moving into a house with members of Swearin’ and other Philly punk bands, and put together a new full-band incarnation of Radiator Hospital from a cast of local players. Exploring themes of love, pop music and science fiction, the first official full-length, Something Wild, arrived in summer of 2013, followed by a second LP Torch Song in 2014.
“Sam Cook-Parrott is some kind of boy wonder at feelings-working-overtime songs, combining pop-punk fervor with heart-on-sleeve tenderness and wit.” (Rolling Stone)
https://www.facebook.com/Radiator-Hospital-176558109029693/
Average Sex
Average Sex is a five piece indie pop band formed in East London in the summer of 2016 by Laetitia Bocquet and Sam O’Donovan, with Hatcham Social / Bed In Park man Finnigan Kidd on drums. Debut track “Ice Cream” oozes cool summer vibes similar to early Best Coast and is featured on the Crocodile RCRDS curated “Better Off Together” compilation.

Haiku Salut
Haiku Salut are an instrumental dream-pop-post-folk-neo-everything trio from the Derbyshire Dales whose talent for combining joyous folk, intricate electronica and spellbinding neo-classical has seen them compared to everyone from Beirut to Sigur Ros and Aphex Twin. The group consists of multi-instrumentalists Gemma Barkerwood, Sophie Barkerwood, and Louise Croft. Between them, Haiku Salut play accordion, piano, glockenspiel, trumpet, guitar, ukulele, drums, and melodica. Their music also features electronic elements, which they refer to as “loopery and laptopery”. Influenced by the evocative film soundtracks of Yann Tiersen and Benoît Charest, the genre-melting electronica of early Múm, and the impressionistic writing of Haruki Murakami, the band released their debut album Tricolore in 2013, and their second album, “Etch And Etch Deep”, in July 2015, both to huge critical acclaim.  The band are are famed for their mute performances, allowing the music to cast its magical spell.
“Spellbinding folktronica from the edge of the Peak District. If Sigur Ros shared a cottage in Dovedale, they might just sound as magical as this.” (Uncut)
http://www.haikusalut.com
Trust Fund
Trust Fund is Ellis Jones and friends who make the kind of melancholy power pop you wish you had heard during your awkward years. Rough strumming, yearning, ranged vocals and with a hint of Elliott Smith delicacy, it’s the perfect combination to fall in love with. Their new album “We have always lived in The Harolds” is out now.
“An indie pop masterclass where raw beauty is coupled with flashes of pure power.” (Louder Than War)

Totally
Jade, Laurel, Fliss, Franny and Susan make up Totally, a London-based five piece. After seeing Susan playing drums for Pete Astor, Jade, Laurel and Fliss ambushed her and pressganged her into a band, with Franny soon following to complete the line-up. Totally like DIY, sixties girl groups, and 90s R&B – you might be able to hear this in their music.

The Just Joans
Hailing from Motherwell via Glasgow and Edinburgh, The Just Joans play indie the way indie is meant to be played… incompetently and with a thick Scottish accent. Named after the legendary Scottish agony aunt, Joan Burnie, the band have been ploughing the same indie furrow for almost 10 years now. Despite this decade in the business, which has seen most of their contemporaries hone their skills and achieve some level of success, The Joans have remained true to their shambolic, lo-fi roots and have steadfastly refused to improve. Some say that this level of dedication to their art is honourable, even truly heroic. Others have said that they are just plain lazy. They will be playing all your favourite tracks including “Hey Boy, You’re Oh So Sensitive”, “What Do We Do Now?” and the anthemic (when performed by Allo Darlin’) “If You Don’t Pull”. There will also be some newer tracks, which aren’t as good, and perhaps even one or two surprises.
“The missing link between The Magnetic Fields and The Proclaimers.” (Is This Music?)

Expert Alterations
Expert Alterations are a jangle pop band from Baltimore, USA, founded in March of 2013 by Paul Krolian, Alan Everhart and Patrick Teal. Deadpan vocals mingle with sparkling, chiming guitars and an insistent rhythm borne out of the tenacious, nervous energy of The Fall. Expert Alterations’ influences range from the well-trod (TVPs, The Pastels, The Wedding Present) to roads less traveled (Yeah Yeah Noh, Close Lobsters) and they process them into songs that leave them poised to become the new standard-bearers of such whipsmart pop tunes, using the detailed map of their predecessors to chart a course to a musical utopia where sonic hooks are paramount and wry lyrics celebrated.
“A breathless rush of post-punk angularity, jittery indie pop songcraft, and stripped-down guitar-bass-drums-vocals punk energy.” (AllMusic)

Bill Botting & The Two Drink Minimums
Bill Botting is best known as the bass player from Allo Darlin with the encouraging face, or as one half of indie electro-wierdos Moustache of Insanity, Bill returned to playing his own music sometime in 2014. Although initially a solo act, the Two Drink Minimums is a swelling and contracting band featuring members of Owl and Mouse, Tigercats, Allo Darlin and The Wave Pictures. Sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, boozy with a country slant and an indie heart.
“A little bit of stripped down folk, but still adheres to a pop sensibility” (Austin Town Hall)

Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £7
Ticket Link: https://www.songkick.com/home
From the sunny streets of the South East of England, Get Inuit play dirty indie guitar pop. Having spent the last 12 months fine-tuning their fuzzed-out live show, supporting the likes of VANT, Spring King, The Magic Gang, PUP, Slaves and DZ Deathrays along the way, they’ve never lost sight of the earworm pop sensibility they hold so dear.
Named as one of Annie Mac’s Ones To Watch for 2016, the band have released a number of critically acclaimed singles, namely ‘Pro Procrastinator’, ‘My Oh My’ and ‘I Am The Hot Air’ – to name a few, picking up unwavering support from DIY, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Gigwise and more along the way. Huw Stephens has played all 11 songs the band have released so far, with Radio 1 being huge supporters of the band throughout their burgeoning careers.

Tift Merritt – Stitch of the World September 2016 As 2015 began, I had somehow been on the road for the fastest, longest two years of my life. I had kicked the tires hard touring in support of my album Traveling Alone. I had recorded and toured with classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein. My friend Andrew Bird asked me to be in his old time band the Hands of Glory, so I pretended I was a member of the Carter family on guitar, and I watched him like a hawk to make sure he felt fully free; singing harmony with Andrew is not unlike flying. Suddenly, I was turning 40, getting divorced, and scared out of my mind. So I decided to take a year off the road to see what would happen to me if I just stopped touring… On a friend’s ranch in Marfa, Texas, in the middle of the high plains without a car headlight in sight, I did just that, and when I did, I started to do what I always do: the humble work of marking life by writing. On the ranch, I wrote about the long straight roads in west Texas: the ones that make sense, that make you feel like what is behind you is indeed behind you and that good things are up ahead. ‘Wait For Me’ is a wish that life would run like that. Watching the ranch hands keep their daily routine, I wrote about keeping my own head down, pressing on, and the way that love persists and pushes forward no matter what happens, ‘Love Soldiers On.’ I watched birds learning to fly and bathe in the driveway dust at dusk in the front yard and wrote ‘Icarus’ about what they taught me. In my California cabin, I wrote every morning and hiked every afternoon, up the mountains to the East and along the rocky coast, farther than I had ever hiked, one exhausted foot after the other. ‘Heartache is an Uphill Climb’ began in the red mud on one particularly impossible incline. Once, having hiked farther than I realized, dark fell on me. The white lilies in a meadow began to glow like evening dresses as the moon rose in the changing light. ‘Proclamation Bones’ is a tribute to that unexpected beauty, to nature’s secret nightlife. On return to NYC with Raymond Carver’s All of Us: The Collected Poems in hand, his poem ‘My Boat’ leapt up like lightning; it wanted to be sung. In a hungover moment of joy coming out of a subway, ‘Something Came Over Me’ seeded itself. And the heavy sadness of memory washing over me as I looked out at the East River became ‘Eastern Light’. Look, everyone knows that album bios are usually full of crap. How about this: This album weathered no doubt, Marlon Brando’s ghost played bass and a fire-breathing dragon co-wrote the songs! Let’s be clear about something – What made my time off special was that I had a regular writing routine. I was private. I followed my heart and my craft. The story of being a writer is the story of being devoted over a long time. What I hate most about bios is that they trade the small virtue of the writing life for pretending that artists and albums spring forth fully formed, trimming the tale to fit the spotlight. I’m more comfortable being real about things. I took my life and synthesized it through my writing with an intensity that no one but the birds saw but that hopefully you can feel. And life continued. Let the real story here be that there is love and beauty in the mess of dedication. And life did continue. In Fall, my friend MC Taylor asked me to be a part of his new Hiss Golden Messenger album. About the same time, to my delight and surprise, I realized my boyfriend and I were expecting a child. I performed with HGM just as I began to show; MC and his band talked on and on about how North Carolina was a place you could actually raise a child AND be a musician. My roots and my friends pulled. In an airport, I bumped into my friend Sam Beam. He said I could send him my songs, and when I did and he said, “I can tell you’ve been working hard on your writing,” I was filled with the gratefulness which comes from being heard. I couldn’t believe he wanted in on the record making party, along with my favorite musicians, for four days because that was what I could afford. One long night before leaving for the studio, I stared at the ceiling of my NYC apartment. The leaves, the streetlights, and the sirens drew a shadow vine. I cried for dreams that were gone, and I gathered myself for those to come. I recorded in Los Angeles six months pregnant and then set off for home to figure out what a onesie was. I showed up back in my hometown knocked about a little by the world thinking maybe my life was a country song, but maybe it was a really good country song. What strikes me most when I am writing these days is the changing nature of things. Sometimes sex matters deeply, sometimes family eclipses all; sometimes aloneness is hell, sometimes it is a refuge. Sometimes hometowns are constricting; sometimes they are a sight for sore eyes. We do our damnedest. For all the times we are watered down and compromise, we can become rigid and impossible just as easily. We right ourselves as best we can and carry on. It is a loose thread that holds us best together in this life. Not too tight, not too planned, enough give to stand what tangles us but ties us nonetheless. Ties us to each other in some unseen pattern, to our actions, to the songs that come out of us, to the seasons that pass through us. We press on, love persists, and we must trust the unknowable pattern we are making. My little daughter is sleeping beside me now, and what I hope for her is what I will tell you now. May these threads be joyful; not heavy chains, but light like wings, like starlight, like laughter. Empty your pockets of stones, that light-hearted you may go (for you must go), with the stitch of the world, into the stitch of the world. – Tift

There’s certainly no shortage of choral harmonies at AmericanaFest, but Darlingside, a quartet out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, transform theirs into locomotive folk-pop confections so richly executed it’s hard to tell if it’s one voice or 12. Singing entirely in unison on their new LP, Birds Say (out Friday), they evoke both the likes of Guster and Crosby, Stills & Nash with a diehard earnestness, mixed with the symphonic chug of a string band. But it’s their use of both electric bass and tinny banjo that keeps it modern. Rolling Stone

Earlier this month Neighbourhood Festival brought together 100s of the most impressive artists and bands from around the world for its inaugural launch in Manchester.
Following its critical acclaim and sell out success Neighbourhood is branching out on tour across sixteen major UK cities in 2017 showcasing three of the UK’s best new bands Cabbage, The Shimmer Band and April. Manchester five-piece Cabbage are one of the most hotly tipped bands right now and have just released their ‘Necroflat In The Palace EP’ on James Skelly’s Skeleton Key Records, the original home of Blossoms and home of She Drew the Gun. The four track EP is the second in a series of three monthly EP’s and follows the release of ‘Uber Capitalist Death Trade EP’ in September. Championed by the likes of Radio 1, BBC 6Music, Radio X, The Guardian, NME and i-D Magazine, they serve up an idiosyncratic, satirical attack in the form of discordant neo post-punk and will headline each night of the tour. The guys are currently on their own extensive headline tour which included a sold-out hometown show at Manchester’s Ruby Lounge.
Psychedelic power-rockers The Shimmer Band represent Bristol’s ever growing live music scene. Following on from the anthemic BBC 6Music favourite ‘Freedom’, they returned this summer with their third single ‘Sunkick’. Having already played storming sets this year at Reading & Leeds, The Great Escape, Isle of Wight and Y Not festivals, with The Stereophonics and The Vaccines at Cardiff City Football Stadium, The Shimmer Band embark on a massive UK tour this autumn.
April are teenage sensations who found a mutual outlook on modern life. Hailing from the South Midlands, they have been touring the live circuit for a few years and have been dubbed as one of the best emerging guitar bands. Having just premiered their second single ‘Open Mind’ with Clash Magazine and had the track debut with BBC Introducing Coventry and Warwickshire, April are a definite one to watch this year.
Neighbourhood on tour will guarantee the best hotly tipped home-grown talent and artists from across the globe and will take place in some of theUK’s coolest small and independent venues.

Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano Ramirez make up JOHNNYSWIM. The pair met in Nashville in 2005, instituting a songwriting partnership not long afterward. They clicked together musically and personally, beginning a romantic relationship along with their creative connection.
The couple married in 2009 and relocated to Los Angeles. In addition to their 2014 debut full- length, they’ve released three EPs, as well as a Christmas EP and a live album.
They’ve performed on various television shows including VH1’s “You Oughta Know Concert,” “The Tonight Show starring Jay Leno,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “Today Show,” “Live with Kelly & Michael,” and provided the theme song on HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.” The duo has also toured extensively including major U.S. festival appearances.
Georgica Pond was produced by JOHNNYSWIM’s Abner Ramirez and recorded at the couple’s home studio in Los Angeles, with bass and drum parts added at the Castle in Nashville.
Of their process, Ramirez explains, “Any fear we had on album one has completely evaporated. We know the people that come to JOHNNYSWIM shows. We know it matters to them what we have to say. We realize that, much like ourselves, our fans appreciate honesty. We wanted that to be the cornerstone of this album.” Amanda Sudano Ramirez further highlights the themes on the album: “love, legacy, the past and the future all put into this bittersweet mixture that makes you fully appreciate the present.”

Big Thief
Bird On The Wire presents
When: 09/02/2017 07:30 pm
Location: Upstairs

Price: £adv £11
Ticket Link: http://birdonthewire.seetickets.com/go/bigthiefthelexington
Big Thief’s music, rooted in the songs of Adrianne Lenker, paints in vivid tones “the process of harnessing pain, loss, and love, while simultaneously letting go, looking into your own eyes through someone else’s, and being okay with the inevitability of death,” says Adrianne.
Masterpiece, Big Thief’s debut album (Saddle Creek), is filled with characters and visceral narratives, songs that pivot in the space of a few words. Adrianne’s voice and guitar playing speak of rich emotional territory with grace and insight. In her words, the record tracks “the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake off the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they’re grounded in simple things.
Adrianne met her longtime musical partner, guitarist and singer, Buck Meek, in Brooklyn a few years ago, and they quickly formed a creative bond tempered by the experience of traveling and performing for months on end in old dive bars, yards, barns, and basements together. They recorded a pair of duo albums (A-Sides and B-Sides), and Adrianne showcased her songs on a solo album, Hours Were The Birds.
Now, as a full rock and roll band, with Buck on guitar, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums, they bring a steady wildness, giving the songs an even deeper layer of nostalgia. “These guys feel like a pack of wolves at my back,” says Adrianne, “they make the songs howl and bark with a fierce tenderness that gives me courage.”
After spending last July in an old house that they turned into a studio on Lake Champlain with producer Andrew Sarlo, the resulting collection soars on what Big Thief fan Sharon Van Etten calls “… a real journey, with intelligent stories and twist-and-turn melodies.”
