Wednesday 24 June

Next Wednesday sees members travel to Blaise Castle for our annual outing. The plan is to meet in the main carpark at 7pm and then wander around Blaise estate until you are either knackered or the light goes - unlike many recent years, when the outing has been in late July or August, this year we are gathering in the great outdoors, just a couple of days past the longest day, so there should be plenty of time to fill your SD cards!
The car park is in Kings Weston Road; for those using sat nav to find it, the nearest post code is BS10 7QS.

There are plenty of things to see at Blaise, from the main house, the woods or St Mary's Church, which has many interesting features, including the 1720 gravestone of Scipio Africanus, a slave in the 16th century. To find out more about the estate, have a look at the Bristol City Council web page by following this link

Below is a map of the area.

My request for suggestions for a venue for the outing brought forth just two responses, one from Linda Meaton who suggested the city docks and a second from Jeff Hargreaves, who suggested Blaise Castle. I plumped for Blaise as it has easier parking, and more importantly - parking is FREE! Many thanks to both for responding.
ZOOM

Needless to say, there will be NO Zoom meeting next week.

RPS Distinctions
The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) have recently issued an update to their distinctions programme, which will affect photographers who have assessments "in the pipeline".

Reproduced below, is a copy of the update, taken from the RPS website:

The Royal Photographic Society is undertaking a major redevelopment of the Distinctions Programme, representing the most significant review of the programme for many years.

To create the time and organisational capacity needed to complete this work, the Society has taken the decision to pause Distinctions assessments for the remainder of 2026. This includes all Licentiate, Associate, and Fellowship assessments.

The redevelopment will focus on strengthening applicant support, assessment and moderation processes, guidance, communication, and long-term sustainability, with a revised Distinctions Programme planned for introduction in 2027.

Applicants are not being asked to start again. Existing work and preparation remain valuable, and applicants are encouraged to continue developing their submissions during this period.

Applicants currently affected by the pause will be contacted directly regarding next steps.

Further information and FAQs are available here.

An up-to-date list of the more commonly available photographic distinctions can be found by clicking here.

Make Nature Work
I’m nothing, if not disappointed, that there was a total lack of response from BPS members to the recently published pleas for someone to act as the “point of contact” for the newly initiated “Make Nature Work” project that is being organised within our small estate. All that is required is for someone to join a WhatsApp group and report occasionally to both BPS and the Make Nature Work organisers – hardly an onerous task! So come on, we shouldn't have to rely on the same small handful of members who do all the work to make sure that you can have a Wednesday evening or a studio session – let’s see some new blood step up to the mark and put something besides their subscription into BPS.

Clink Clink (our neighbours in Unit 14) and the Bristol Zoo Project have launched the “Make Nature Work” project at Montpelier Central. This involves various things including installing wildlife trail cameras and upgrading all the planting around the estate to make it more nature friendly and involves all the tenants in Montpelier Central.

To kick things off, in June the project will begin the first round of adding new plants to the site and installing bird and insect boxes. We have received the following request from Clink Clink: To get things going, we hoped you would nominate one person from your organisation who can be our lead point of contact for the volunteering days. All we’ll need them to do is gauge the availability/interest of the team and share it back with us. We’ll add them to a WhatsApp group and then send (light) comms to organise the first volunteering day for a time that suits the majority of those who’d like to join us on planting/installing!

This is where you come in - if you would like to be the BPS point of contact and would like to get involved in the project, please email me (pete@bristolphoto.org.uk) with your mobile phone number and I will pass it on.

Amateur Photographer of the Year 2026

The 2026 APOY Round 2 - Black & White, is now open for entries until next Monday, 22 June.

Last year’s winners, Plymouth, had 15 members score points by having more shortlisted images, rather than finishing in the top 10 in each competition. Against this BPS had only 5 photographers shortlisted across the various rounds and finished 9th – with the talent within BPS we should finish way higher up the rankings.  But to do so, requires members to enter! So, let's get behind this and give this a real go.
Here is the timetable for the rest of the competition:
To enter, just visit: www.amateurphotographer.com/apoy and quote the FREE entry code APOY77410062 Just remember to select Bristol PS when you register your first entry.

So, now you've been given all the entry details, and you've got the talent and especially as it'll cost you nowt - you have no excuse not to enter!

Wales & West Photography Show

Wales' Largest Free Photo & Video Show located in the International Convention Centre Wales, Newport takes place on 18-20 June. Full details and booking can be found on their website: https://www.waleswestphoto.com/

Wex Roadshow - Thursday 23 July

BPS will be playing host to WEX and their annual Roadshow on 23 July. They are planning a series of 30-45 minutes talks on the hour, by a number of well-known photography brand ambassadors or speakers as well as a couple of organised Street walks in the local area. An outline of the day is available on their website though tickets aren’t yet available.

NOTE: Due to the number of speakers, etc, there will be NO parking available at Unit 13 so bear that in mind if you intend booking one or more sessions when tickets become available.

Further details can be found on the Wex website.

Photography Event

West Coast Photography Rocks Ltd (BPS member Paul Moran) will be launching their first event on 28 July at The Mount Without in Bristol. This will be a fashion and ballet portfolio builder with 4 of the UK’s top models: Carla Monaco, Natasha J Bella, Erica Mulkern and Runway Voguish. The early bird price is £275 per person. As a special incentive Paul is offering an extra £25 off that price for BPS members until 1st July (making it £250). There will be a maximum of 16 photographers on the event, working in groups of four. Three groups will be for experienced photographers, and one group for those who are new to fashion and ballet (this group will be supported by Mike Martin throughout the day). Lunch will be provided.
