Barbara Salter LRPS AFIAP
It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of BPS Life Member Barbara Salter LRPS AFIAP. Barbara had been in poor health for some time and had spent the last few months in a nursing home, where she passed away peacefully this morning (Thursday 5 March) - our deepest sympathies go to her husband, fellow Life Member, Mike.

Barbara joined the Society, with Mike, in 1982 since when they both played an integral part in the Society, with Barbara being BPS Secretary from 1991 to 2006 and then Clubroom Steward from 2006 until 2010. For many years, both Barbara and Mike were stalwart helpers with the Bristol Salon, having been responsible for the Salon catalogue for a long time.

Mike and Barbara had not been to BPS for some time due partly to Mike's problems with night driving and more recently Barbara's poor health, although they continued to take an interest in the Society's activities. Barbara will be remembered with fondness by many of the older members of the Society.

Distinctions Advice Group - NEXT MONDAY

DISTINCTIONS ADVICE GROUP
A meeting for everyone who wants to advance their photography

The next meeting will be held next Monday 9 March at the Clubrooms.

For those of you who are unaware of the distinctions available, there are basically two types:

Those where you have to produce a panel or set of pictures.
This is the case for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), The Photographic Alliance (PAGB) and the Welsh Federation (WPF). For the RPS and WPF the work has to form a panel. For the PAGB, the work does not have to be related, and the pictures are assessed separately.

For the RPS awards you have to be a member of the RPS. This costs £130 per year (£98 if you are over 65). The RPS has different categories of awards, and we can advise on these. This is why the PAGB awards are so popular as you only pay an entry fee.

Those where distinctions are awarded for the number of pictures accepted in approved National and international exhibitions.

You will often have seen a scrabble board of letters after visiting speakers' and judges' names, these are very often awarded for gaining acceptances in exhibitions. This is not as daunting as it may seem, so why not pop along on Monday to see just what is involved.

These exhibitions are approved by the PAGB for national exhibitions, Federation de L’Art Photographic (FIAP) and The Photographic Society of America (PSA), for International Exhibitions These days FIAP mostly dominate the Internationals, and their awards are very popular.

BPS Advice meetings.
Andrew Marker, Ralph Snook and I offer advice on how to approach an entry for these distinctions. We do not expect you to have a fully worked out entry and like to see work in progress.

We are also able to offer more detailed advice on pictures than is provided by our Club competitions, as judges advice is limited by the large entry and limited time available.

So, if you want opinions on pictures, bring them along.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
