Hey there,
When your life’s work revolves around murder, death, scandal, suicide and the like, one can’t help but wonder sometimes what possesses people to do certain things. Take, for example, women who love serial killers in jail. They show up at trails, write love letters, marry them. Even the most seasoned Death Hag is likely to say, er... um... wtf... seriously . But it happens. A lot.
Well, as it turns out, this sort of behavior is a thing and there is even a name for it: Hybristophilia. If that’s too hard to pronounce (because it is) you can also call it the Bonnie & Clyde Syndrome. A professor named John Money (or is it DeMonet!) defined it as partners who are sexually aroused by men who have “committed an outrage or crime, such as rape, murder, or armed robbery.” Delightful.
Not only is there a name for it, but there are different kinds. Passive hybristophiliacs don’t actually partake in the crimes. They just get off on the fact that their partners have. They usually have rescue fantasies about “changing” the serial killer (note to aspiring hybristophiliacs: they NEVER change), they justify or make excuses for the violent behavior and they convince themselves that their sweetheart would never hurt them. Blah blah blah. These are the women who write fan letters to killers in prison.
Then there is the aggressive hybristophiliac. These fine ladies actively help their men and participate. This can include, but is not limited to, luring victims, covering up the crimes or even helping in some capacity. They are attracted to violence, don’t realize they’re being manipulated and want to feel loved. Bless.
So, this is a messy syndrome. No one knows what causes it. There are some good theories, but they’re just that: theories. Hybristophiliacs usually lack confidence and self-esteem and a significant portion of them have been abused (duh). Physical and/or sexual abuse often leads to the self-esteem issues and can even explain why someone might develop an attraction toward violence or dangerous sexual arousal. Basically, many childhood victims have trouble breaking the abuse cycle as adults. Or if they were abused they feel safe as adults if their boyfriend or husband is in jail for life because the guy can’t “hurt” them.
Here are some other possibilities:
- Women who love bad boys in the extremist sense.
- Women who love pursuing something forbidden or taboo.
- Some women want to be famous or notorious.
- The fantasy, like mentioned above, of rescuing someone or giving him enough love to change.
- They want to nurture or “mother” the criminal because was he was abused in childhood.
- When your lover is in jail you don’t have to worry about the boredom and frustration of real, day-to-day life or relationship. In other words, the Night Stalker won’t nag you about dinner or the laundry.
- They don't have to deal with body contact or sex.
- Some women see serial killers as alpha males.
- Because prison inmates have nothing but time, they can shower a “girlfriend” with letters, homemade presents … and whatever else it is they do all day. Anyway, it’s romantical.
- Some women are just regular ol’ deviants and this is how it comes out.
Whatever it is, it’s powerful. So much so that female groupies used to write to Jeffrey Dahmer and he not only ate his victims, he didn’t even like women. He was into guys. No matter! That didn’t stop horny women from writing him letters. Pick any famous killer and I promise you, he, she, it and shit has groupies. These are just the famous cases. There are plenty of regular bad guys out there getting more women than a regular guy on a dating app or sitting in a bar.
