Next week we welcome, all the way from Bath, Ian Hargreaves LRPS, who will be presenting his talk, Into Darkness. Ian is President of Bath Photographic Society, almost mirroring the role of his uncle, Jeff, our Chairman!
He says the following about his talk:
I started my photographic journey in 2011, when I bought a DSLR and attended a course, from Auto to Manual. Between then and now I have amassed thousands of images of every subject and genre.
|
|
In 2023 I decided to focus on a project. This talk recounts my journey into high contrast black and white photography of brutalist and hi-tech architecture. You will discover what lead me to this project, what my influences are, the techniques and equipment used to capture the images, how the images were processed and ultimately what I have done with the images and what I learnt. I have printed many of the images and will display these for you to look at before the talk and during the break. |
Here are a few images from the talk: |

Annual Projected Image Competition |
The closing date for the Annual Projected Image Competition is next week - 29 April. The judge this year will be Eddy Lane ARPS DPAGB EFIAP APAGB.
Annual Projected Digital Image Competition This competition consists of the usual Club, Intermediate and Advanced levels. In addition, there is a Nature section which does not distinguish between Club, Intermediate and Advanced entrants but is open to all. Anyone wishing to enter the Nature section must indicate the entries with the appropriate identification, letter Y, in place of the level letter.
Members may submit a maximum of 4 PDI images into each entered section. These must be numbered in the entrant’s preferred order, as some images may be excluded if the total entry is excessive. In addition to the usual awards at each level, the judge is asked to select the Best Travel, People, Action, Landscape and Monochrome pictures from the whole entry (i.e. all levels). One or more of the Best Travel etc awards may well go to an image that gains another award. A trophy will be presented for the best image in each competition at the AGM. The trophy will be awarded for one of the 1st place images.

Distinctions Advisory Meeting |
The next meeting will be held on Monday 11 May at the Clubrooms and is open to ALL members.
For those of you who are unaware of the distinctions available, there are basically two types:
- Those where you have to produce a panel or set of pictures.
This is the case for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS), The Photographic Alliance (PAGB) and the Welsh Federation (WPF). For the RPS and WPF the work has to form a panel. For the PAGB, the work does not have to be related, and the pictures are assessed separately.
For the RPS awards you have to be a member of the RPS. This costs £130 per year (£98 if you are over £65). The RPS has different categories of awards, and we can advise on these. This is why the PAGB awards are so popular as you only pay an entry fee.
- Those where distinctions are awarded for the number of pictures accepted in approve National and international exhibitions.
These exhibitions are approved by the PAGB for national exhibitions, Federation de L’Art Photographic (FIAP) and The Photographic Society of America (PSA), for International Exhibitions These days FIAP mostly dominate the Internationals, and their awards are very popular.
BPS Advice Meetings
Andrew Marker, Ralph Snook and I offer advice as to how approach an entry for these distinctions. We do not expect you to have a fully worked out entry and like to see work in progress.
We are also able to offer more detailed advice on pictures than is provided by our Club competitions, as judges' advice is limited by the large entry and limited time available.
So, if you want opinions on pictures, bring them along.
If you wish to show DPIs, please let me know.
Peter McCloskey FRPS

First results from the Chelteham International Salon have surfaced, with the usual culprits floating to the top:
Sue O'Connell. Mono. Gold Medal
Barry Mead. Creative. Gold Medal
I hope to have further results for next week's issue.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions,
it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know
so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that
you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER. |
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such
seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to see the list.
