Next Wednesday sees a return visit to BPS by Gareth Martin AWPF, CPAGB. Gareth was last here to judge the 2025 Annual Print Competition; this time he will be presenting his talk: A selection of my favourite colour and mono prints.
This is what Gareth says about his talk:
I will be sharing my stories that go with the prints, there will be a lot of WPF Salon acceptance and winners on show. I’ve been called the best Welsh Storyteller in the WPF area. My prints are all mounted on 50x40 cm mounts, but the prints are smaller than usual. Please remember to ask me why I do this.
|
|
|
There are several reasons - here’s one of them: I don’t follow sheep and have developed my own style. I will be bringing some bodies of work including a 22 sepia print collection on Cwmorthin in very bad weather with the grunge look, with the story behind it and this question “where does one get inspiration” without using your eyes? |
Here are a few images from the talk: |

The closing date for these panel competitions is 10 June.
Garmston Bowl PDI uploads and Prints
Please upload the PDIs of your prints via PhotoEntry. Give each uploaded image the overall panel title plus a number, 1-5, reading left to right facing the panel.
There is a box for your actual prints on the stage in Unit 13. The closing date is 10 June.

Breaking News! The Chairman (AKA Jeff Hargreaves) has taken the drastic step to cut household expenses by having his landline removed - if you need to contact him, you'll need to ring his mobile.

I'm repeating this article from last week as the request was met with a deafening silence. In a club with such a strong nature section, surely someone would enjoy being part of this wildlife initiative.
Clink Clink (our neighbours in Unit 14) and the Bristol Zoo Project have launched the “Make Nature Work” project at Montpelier Central. This involves various things including installing wildlife trail cameras and upgrading all the planting around the estate to make it more nature friendly and involves all the tenants in Montpelier Central.
To kick things off, in June the project will begin the first round of adding new plants to the site and installing bird and insect boxes. We have received the following request from Clink Clink: To get things going, we hoped you would nominate one person from your organisation who can be our lead point of contact for the volunteering days. All we’ll need them to do is gauge the availability/interest of the team and share it back with us. We’ll add them to a WhatsApp group and then send (light) comms to organise the first volunteering day for a time that suits the majority of those who’d like to join us on planting/installing!
This is where you come in - if you would like to be the BPS point of contact and would like to get involved in the project, please email me ( pete@bristolphoto.org.uk) with your mobile phone number and I will pass it on.

Amateur Photographer of the Year 2026 |
 |
|
The 2026 APOY is now under way, with the first round already completed. Round 2 - Black & White, is now open for entries.
Last year’s winners, Plymouth, had 15 members score points by having more shortlisted images, rather than finishing in the top 10 in each competition. Against this BPS had only 5 photographers shortlisted across the various rounds and finished 9th – with the talent within BPS we should finish way higher up the rankings. But to do so, requires members to enter! So, lets get behind this and give this a real go.
|
|
Here is the timetable for the rest of the competition:
To enter, just visit: www.amateurphotographer.com/apoy and quote the FREE entry code APOY77410062 Just remember to select Bristol PS when you register your first entry.
So, now you've been given all the entry details, and you've got the talent and especially as it'll cost you nowt - you have no excuse not to enter!

I received the following from Sue O'Connell:
The London Salon
I had been waiting to hear if any other members had acceptances in this year’s London Salon but it seems not. So just to let you know that Peter and I were both very happy to be successful this year. I had two acceptances including a Medal and Peter had one acceptance. Information about the exhibition (below) includes my awarded image (bottom left), which members may recognise from the recent BPS Annual PDI competition!!
It might be interesting for newer members to know a bit about the London Salon, which has a fairly unique place among photographic competitions. The group was formed over 100 years ago as a reaction to what members felt was an RPS bias towards “technique” rather than content, and the London Salon was set up as an annual international exhibition with the explicit aim: "to exhibit only that class of photographic work in which there is distinct evidence of artistic feeling and execution”. Successful images are chosen by members of the group (not imported judges), and the exhibition (Smethwick, London, Edinburgh) is well worth catching for something different, if you get the chance. https://thelondonsalon.org

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include them in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).
|
IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions,
it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know
so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that
you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell
us we can't possibly know!
