Tai Chi Master Class with World Champion Ye Yongxiang at London Hampstead
When Ye Yongxiang "Lillianna" first arrived at LSI London Hampstead over a month ago she stood out as being a very special and talented lady. At the age of only 27 she is the current world champion in Tai Chi winning her title in the 'International Kung Fu Championship' held in Hong Kong this year. Following in the footsteps of both her grandmother and mother (who herself was world champion), Tai Chi has always been a fundamental part of her life.

Lillianna uses descriptions such as 'moving yoga' and 'eastern ballet' to explain the grace and poise of Tai Chi. Despite being a martial art and thus a contact sport, the emphasis in Tai Chi is in inner strength and controlled movement rather than physical force.

"Tai Chi encourages a person to be more reflective, spiritual even. It's beneficial in many ways – it helps to improve your coordination, sense of balance and relieves stress."

Lillianna kindly agreed to give a demonstration lesson to her fellow students and teachers. After the initial warm up, Lilliana performed some classic Tai Chi movements and ended with teaching some basic Tai Chi movements.

LSI Canada Schools Become Designated Learning Institutions
Good news! Both LSI Toronto and LSI Vancouver have recently been approved by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) as Designated Learning Institutions in the International Student Program and therefore are able to accept students who come to Canada on study permits. Under new CIC regulations, as of June 1, 2014, all students who come to Canada on study permits will be required to attend only Designated Learning Institutions.

The new regulations will not affect students who come for less than 6 months, who are still able to study on a tourist visa. For more information contact LSI Toronto or LSI Vancouver.

Record Numbers of Organisations Use Cambridge ELA Exams for Language Level Testing
Recent figures released by Cambridge English Language Assessment, which is part of the prestigious University of Cambridge, show a massive uptake in the Cambridge ELA exams. Since 2011 there has been a 36 increase in demand and a record 15,000 organisations globally now use the tests as proof of English level. This increased recognition of the ELA tests can be seen by organisations across all sectors including Higher Education and Government Immigration departments. To cope with the increased demand for testing, more and more test centres are opening and the now number over 2,800 worldwide in 117 countries.

According to Nicola Johnson from Cambridge ELA , "We're seeing a huge rise in the number of the organisations relying on Cambridge English exams, which is really encouraging. If we look at the higher education sector for example, we've seen international student numbers triple in the last two decades. This has created a demand for high quality language testing, a trend we're also seeing in the workplace and other sectors"

LSI currently have 5 schools listed as official test centres: Brighton, London Hampstead, London Central, Cambridge and San Diego. In addition it is possible to book an exam online for all the UK centres. Malta
Unmissable Places to Visit
Did you know ...?

Malta might be small in size but it has an amazing variety of places to visit so deciding on a shortlist of five was difficult. The top 5 in our opinion:

1. Valetta : Packed into just one square mile, Malta's capital city has been described by UNESCO as "one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world". Brimming with cultural influences and architectural styles from the many different settlers and traders to the island, Valetta is a harmonious melting pot. Definitely one for culture vultures.

Here's a small taster of interesting facts about one of our favourite lesser known European countries.

Did you know for instance that ...

Malta actually consists of many islands but only three are inhabited: Gozo, Comino and Malta. Malta is considered to be one of the smallest countries in the world with the largest island ( Malta) measuring only 27km by 17km.

What Our Students Have to Say About Us
Name: Marzena Nowicka
School: LSI Brisbane
Marzena is currently travelling in Australia with her husband and young daughter. As an international business woman back in her native Poland, improving her English was essential to communicate effectively with her foreign clients. Arriving at LSI Brisbane six months ago with only an elementary level of English, she now has a strong intermediate level and has been very happy with her progress.

"When I arrived at LSI Brisbane my English was at a basic level. I could communicate but it was very stressful for me. After a few weeks I began to feel more confident and I improved my English, which I needed for working with my foreign clients. In LSI Brisbane I met many unusual and valuable friends from around the world with whom I remain in constant contact. "

"Learning has never been so much fun as in LSI Brisbane. The friendly atmosphere among students as well as very helpful teachers and staff have meant that every day I went to school with pleasure and joy. I wholeheartedly recommend this school for all those people who want to learn English regardless of age."

Featured Teacher
Academic English at LSI Brighton
This month's featured teacher is Charles Valente from LSI Toronto. Charles has been teaching for over 20 years, and he has been at LSI Toronto since 1999. He has taught all the levels ranging from Elementary to Advanced, and is also one of LSI Toronto's Cambridge teachers. He is well known for his teaching style, creativity, love of squash, "chunking" of English words, and his funny speeches during graduation time.

He became interested in teaching when his high school guidance counsellor suggested it as a career option. That's what he became and he has stated that it's a choice he has never regretted. Charles said, "My career path has been incredibly rewarding for me on a personal level. When I think that going to work means spending time with motivated, knowledgeable students and colleagues from a variety of backgrounds and places, I feel very lucky."

At LSI Toronto, we feel very fortunate to have him as part of our staff.

This unique course, offered only at LSI Brighton, offers intensive preparation for students who wish to study at an English speaking university. Both morning and afternoon classes focus on the higher level speaking, listening, writing and reading skills required to succeed at university and help students to work towards specific English level test exams, such as IELTs and TOEFL, that are part of the university entry requirements.

What makes LSI Brighton's Academic English stand out from other LSI programmes is the ability to study for IELTS and TOEFL as part of both the AM and PM classes, thus giving more flexibility to students who can only study in the morning. View our Academic English video.

Keep to the Beat – Techniques to improve your English -
According to Mark Lane, Assistant School Director at LSI London Central, learning English is great fun and it's all about rhythm.

"For most of our students, one major reason for coming here to study is that they want to improve their speaking. We all have an accent that is not entirely natural when we speak a second language, and many of our students state that they would like to totally lose their own accent. It's not very easy to do this .However, working on your English pronunciation and intonation can make a big difference to your speaking (and also your listening) skills. "

"English is a 'stress-timed' language. This means that there is a natural rhythm to the language and that stressed syllables follow a beat (they are said at regular intervals.) Not every syllable in a sentence has the same length or the same importance. The important information is stressed and then the rest fits into the gaps - e.g. Bob is going to France on Wednesday. If you only heard the stressed parts you would still understand the sentence."
