NMC 2024: Nederlands Mathematisch Congres
|
De voorbereidingen voor het Nederlands Mathematisch Congres 2024 zijn in volle gang en het programma begint vorm te krijgen. Keynote lezingen worden gegeven door Leslie Ann Goldberg (University of Oxford), Stefanie Jegelka (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) en Amie Wilkinson (University of Chicago). De Beeger-lezing wordt gegeven door Andrew Sutherland (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
Alle vier de wiskundeclusters, de twee NWO Zwaartekracht programma's, AI and Mathematics (AIM) en 4TU.AMI zullen een parallelsessie organiseren. Verder zullen er sessies worden georganiseerd door EWM-NL en door het nieuw opgerichte Jong KWG.
Naast de keynote lectures en de traditionele parallelsessies zullen de programmaonderdelen die vorig jaar werden geïntroduceerd, worden aangeboden: de workshops voor promovendi, de Poster Competition en de Indagationes Mathematicae Best Paper Award sessie. Daarnaast zijn er Speed Dates with Industry, en zullen
de KWG PhD Prize, de Stieltjesprijs en de Pythagorasprijs worden
uitgereikt.
Het NMC 2024 wordt gehouden in De Werelt in Lunteren.

Onno Boxma wint David Blackwell Prize 2023
|
Emeritus hoogleraar Boxma onderscheidt zich door zijn wetenschappelijke innovatie, diepgang, betekenis en impact op het gebied van Applied Probabilty.

Onno Boxma, emeritus hoogleraar Stochastische Operationele Research bij de afdeling Wiskunde en Informatica, is uitgeroepen tot winnaar van de 2023 APS David Blackwell Prize. De prijs werd aan hem uitgereikt tijdens de 2023 INFORMS Annual Meeting, die plaatsvond van 15 tot 18 oktober in Phoenix, Arizona.
De prijs wordt jaarlijks uitgereikt aan een persoon voor fundamentele en langdurige carrièrebijdragen op het gebied van toegepaste waarschijnlijkheid. De prijs is bedoeld als erkenning voor een levenslange carrière van theoretische en/of toepassingsgedreven wetenschap binnen de Toegepaste Waarschijnlijkheid die een significante impact heeft gehad op operationeel onderzoek en de managementwetenschappen.

A PhD, is that for me 2024

Denk je na over je toekomst? Wil je je wiskundige kennis toepassen in een bedrijf, of eerst verder leren door te promoveren?
Met dit eendaagse evenement voor studenten in zowel theoretische als toegepaste wiskunde willen we de voordelen van het doen van een PhD laten zien om studenten te helpen bij het maken van hun keuze of ze al dan niet een PhD willen aanvragen. We hebben sprekers uitgenodigd uit veel verschillende gebieden van de wiskunde binnen de academische wereld en het bedrijfsleven.
Doelgroep: masterstudenten wiskunde die studeren aan een universiteit in Nederland. Vooral vrouwen en studenten uit minderheidsgroepen in de wiskunde worden aangemoedigd om mee te doen.

In memoriam – professor Bert Peletier
|
Op 16 december 2023 is onze gerespecteerde en geliefde oud-collega prof.dr.ir. Bert Peletier overleden.
Van 1977 tot zijn pensionering werkte Bert als hoogleraar Analyse en Toegepaste Wiskunde. Sinds 1999 is hij lid van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen. In 2013 werd hij benoemd tot Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw. Hij was ook medeoprichter van het interdisciplinaire Lorentz Center in Leiden.
Bert was een eminent wiskundige met een brede belangstelling. Hij kreeg grote internationale waardering voor zijn werk in partiële differentiaalvergelijkingen en niet-lineaire analyse. Hij heeft veel bijgedragen aan de wiskundige onderbouwing van onderzoek naar nieuwe medicijnen, onderzoek waar hij nog steeds aan werkte.
Bert was een hartelijke man met oprechte belangstelling voor collega's en studenten. Hij stond altijd klaar met een luisterend oor, doordacht advies en, indien mogelijk, praktische ondersteuning. We zullen hem erg missen.

Outreach call betadecanen
|
Ieder jaar publiceren de betadecanen een call voor outreach in de vakken Wiskunde, natuurkunde, scheikunde en informatica. In total is er jaarlijks 700.000 Euro beschikbaar. In de afgelopen jaren hebben wiskundigen succesvolle voorstellen ingediend, zoals voor de wiskunde-olympiades, voor speciale websites, voor ‘’Imaginary’’, ‘’Pythagoras’’ en ‘’Vierkant voor Wiskunde’’.
Voor wiskunde is grosso modo 90.000 Euro beschikbaar ieder jaar, en we moedigen wiskundigen aan om over geschikte voorstellen na te denken. Wel horen we graag als er plannen zijn, zodat e.e.a. gecoordineerd kan worden vanuit Bureau PWN.
Drie types projecten komen in aanmerking voor financiering:
1. Landelijke outreach activiteiten in primair en voortgezet onderwijs (havo en vwo) en het algemene publiek op het gebied van natuurkunde, scheikunde, wiskunde, informatica of domeinoverstijgend (STEM);
2. Onderwijsvernieuwing in primair en voortgezet onderwijs, gericht op vakvernieuwing en activering van docenten wiskunde, informatica natuurkunde en scheikunde en de aanpalende vakken;
3. Vakinhoudelijke en/of vakdidactische professionalisering van docenten wiskunde, informatica natuurkunde en scheikunde en de aanpalende vakken.
De call zal openen op 1 februari, voorstellen dienen uiterlijk 1 mei te worden ingediend. Op de website https://betadecanen.nl/outreach/ zijn de richtlijnen te vinden, en is ook een historie van toegekende voorstellen te vinden.

Stéphanie van der Pas en Valentijn Karemaker nieuwe leden voor De Jonge Akademie
|
In 2024 krijgt De Jonge Akademie er weer tien nieuwe leden bij. Ze komen uit de volle breedte van de wetenschap en doen onderzoek naar uiteenlopende onderwerpen, variërend van naaldloos injecteren tot techniekfilosofie en natuurlijke bescherming tegen de zee.
Op het gebied van de wiskunde zijn er 2 nieuwe leden: Stéphanie van der Pas (Amsterdam UMC)en Valentijn Karemaker (Universiteit Utrecht). Zij worden officieel als lid van De Jonge Akademie geïnstalleerd op dinsdag 26 maart 2024.

Avond van de Abelprijs 2024
|
Over het werk van de wiskundige Luis Caffarelli
Luis Caffarelli is een vooraanstaand wiskundige die onderzoek verricht aan partiële differentiaalvergelijkingen die kunnen worden gebruikt om uiteenlopende verschijnselen te beschrijven, zoals de stroming van vloeistoffen of de groei van bevolkingsgroepen. Hij werd in 2023 geëerd met de Abelprijs - die wordt gezien als de Nobelprijs van de wiskunde - voor zijn 'baanbrekende bijdragen aan de theorie van de regelmatigheid van niet-lineaire partiële differentiaalvergelijkingen'. Drie wiskundigen uit het vakgebied van Caffarelli informeren u deze avond over de mogelijkheden en toepassingen van deze theorie en Caffarelli's bijdragen hieraan.

Stieltjesprijs academisch jaar 2022-2023
|
De Stieltjesprijs 2022-2023 voor het beste proefschrift in de wiskunde in Nederland is gewonnen door Lucas Slot (Universiteit van Tilburg en CWI, momenteel ETH Zürich), voor zijn proefschrift getiteld "Asymptotic Analysis of Semidefinite Bounds for Polynomial Optimization and Independent Sets in Geometric Hypergraphs".
De jury bestond uit Erik van den Ban (UU), Odo Diekmann (UU), Aernout van Enter (RUG), Frans Oort (UU), Marc Uetz (UT), Aad van der Vaart (TUD) en Kees Vuik (TUD, voorzitter), met assistentie van Marieke Kranenburg (UvA, secretaris). In totaal zijn 76 proefschriften beoordeeld. In verschillende fasen van de beoordeling is extern advies ingewonnen. Na een eerste selectie is een shortlist van 8 dissertaties samengesteld.
De kwaliteit van de 8 proefschriften op de shortlist was opnieuw erg hoog. Na de eerste discussieronde bleven er 3 proefschriften over, allemaal van indrukwekkende kwaliteit, grote originaliteit en zeer goed geschreven. Na een uitgebreide tweede discussieronde concludeerde de jury dat er geen duidelijke onderscheidende elementen waren waarop een winnaar kon worden aangewezen. Uiteindelijk besloot de jury een stemronde te houden, waaruit de winnaar werd gekozen. De jury nomineerde vervolgens Lucas Slot (UvT) voor de Stieltjesprijs 2022-2023.
Het proefschrift van Lucas Slot bestaat uit drie delen. De eerste twee delen behandelen de prestatieanalyse van hiërarchieën van semidefiniete benaderingen voor polynomiale optimalisatieproblemen. Deze niet-lineaire niet-convexe optimalisatieproblemen zijn moeilijk te analyseren en worden in veel toepassingen gebruikt. Deze Lasserre hiërarchieën geven bovengrenzen (deel 1) en ondergrenzen (deel 2) voor het globale optimum. Voor de bovengrenzen biedt het proefschrift een in wezen optimale analyse voor polynomiale optimalisatieproblemen over convexe lichamen en algemene compacte semi-algebraïsche verzamelingen en een strakke analyse voor speciale verzamelingen waaronder de box, de simplex, de bal en algemene convexe lichamen met een mooie grens. Deze resultaten vertegenwoordigen de state-of-the-art. Ze laten een expliciete prestatieanalyse zien met kwadratische afhankelijkheid in de graad, die een sterke verbetering geeft ten opzichte van de best bekende resultaten in de literatuur. Het derde deel van het proefschrift is gewijd aan het begrenzen van de grootte van simplex-vermijdende sets in geometrische hypergrafen via een recursief theta-getal, waarbij ideeën die klassiek zijn voor grafieken op een mooie manier worden uitgebreid.
Het proefschrift is gebaseerd op 7 papers waarvan de meeste al gepubliceerd zijn in hoog aangeschreven tijdschriften. De jury merkte op dat het proefschrift in slechts 3,5 jaar is geschreven. De jury beoordeelde dit als een uitstekende scriptie die de Stieltjesprijs volledig verdient.

Vakantiecursus voor wiskundeleraren 2024
|
De vakantiecursus voor wiskunde leraren heeft dit jaar als thema: Banach-Tarski: hoe groepentheorie van één meloen er twee maakt. De cursus wordt gehouden op 23 en 24 augustus 2024 in Amsterdam en op 6 en 7 september in Antwerpen.
Hoofdsprekers: prof. dr. Stefaan Vaes en dr. Habil, Jeroen Spandaw
De Vakantiecursus voor Wiskundeleraren wordt vanaf 1946 jaarlijks georganiseerd. Sinds 2010 ligt de organisatie in handen van Platform Wiskunde Nederland en sinds vorig jaar wordt ook samengewerkt met Platform Wiskunde Vlaanderen. De cursus richt zich in Nederland vooral op docenten in de bovenbouw vwo. De stof is bij uitstek geschikt voor wiskunde D: uitdagend, fascinerend en toch concreet en toegankelijk. Voor Vlaanderen richt de cursus zich in het bijzonder op leraren die lesgeven in sterk wiskundige richtingen in de
derde graad. De leerstof is bij uitstek geschikt voor 6 uur wiskunde of meer. Andere belangstellenden zijn natuurlijk ook van harte welkom!

Newsletter Dutch Platform for Mathematics, january 2024

NMC 2024: Dutch Mathematical Congress
|
The preparations for the Netherlands Mathematical Congress 2024 are in full swing, and the programme is taking shape. Keynote lectures will be given by Leslie Ann Goldberg (University of Oxford), Stefanie Jegelka (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and Amie Wilkinson (University of Chicago). The Beeger lecture will be given by Andrew Sutherland (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
All four mathematics clusters, the two NWO Gravitation programmes, AI & Mathematics and 4TU.AMI will organize a parallel session. Furthermore, there will be sessions organized by EWM-NL and by the newly established Young KWG.
Next to the keynote lectures and the traditional parallel sessions, the programme elements that were introduced last year, will be offered: the workshops for PhD students, the Poster Competition and the Indagationes Mathematicae Best Paper Award session. Besides the latter, the Speed Dates with Industry, the KWG PhD Prize, the Stieltjes Prize and the Pythagoras Prize ceremonies will take place.
The NMC 2024 will be held in De Werelt in Lunteren.

Onno Boxma wins David Blackwell Prize 2023
|
Emeritus professor Boxma distinguished for his scientific innovation, depth, significance and impact in the field of Applied Probabilty.

Onno Boxma, emeritus professor of Stochastic Operations Research in the department of Mathematics and Computer Science, has been named winner of the 2023 APS David Blackwell Prize. The prize was presented to him at the 2023 INFORMS Annual Meeting, which took place from October 15 to 18 in Phoenix, Arizona.
The prize is awarded annually to an individual for fundamental and sustained career contributions within the area of Applied Probability. The award is intended to recognize a lifetime career of theoretical and/or applications-driven scholarship within Applied Probability that has had a significant impact on operations research and the management sciences.

With this one-day event for students in both theoretical and applied mathematics we aim to showcase the benefits of doing a PhD to help students to make their choice whether they want to apply for a PhD or not. We have invited speakers from many different areas in mathematics within academia and industry.

Where: Koninsbergergebouw, Utrecht University
Target audience: master students in mathematics studying at a university in the Netherlands. Especially women and students from minority groups in mathematics are encouraged to join.

In memoriam – professor Bert Peletier
|
On December 16, 2023, our respected and beloved former colleague prof.dr.ir. Bert Peletier passed away.
From 1977 until his retirement, Bert worked as professor of Analysis and Applied Mathematics. Since 1999 he has been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2013 he was appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He was also co-founder of the interdisciplinary Lorentz Center in Leiden.
Bert was an eminent mathematician with a broad interest. He received great international esteem for his work in partial differential equations and non-linear analysis. He has contributed greatly to the mathematical foundation of research into new medicines, research he was still working on.
Bert was a warm-hearted man with sincere interest for colleagues and students. He was always ready with a sympathetic ear, well-thought-out advice and, if possible, practical support. We will miss him very much.

Every year, the betadeans publish a call for outreach in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science. In total, 700,000 Euros are available each year. In recent years, mathematicians have submitted successful proposals, such as for Mathematics Olympiads, for special websites, for ''Imaginary'', ''Pythagoras'' and ''Square for Mathematics''.
For mathematics, roughly 90,000 Euro is available each year, and we encourage mathematicians to think about suitable proposals. We do like to hear if there are plans, so that things can be coordinated from Bureau PWN.
Three types of projects are eligible for funding:
1. National outreach activities in primary and secondary schools (havo and vwo) and the general public in the fields of physics, chemistry, mathematics, computer science or cross-domain (STEM);
2. Educational innovation in primary and secondary education, focusing on subject innovation and activation of teachers of mathematics, computer science physics and chemistry and the adjacent subjects;
3. Subject-specific and/or subject-specific didactic professionalisation of teachers of mathematics, computer science physics and chemistry and the adjacent subjects.
The call will open on 1 February, with proposals due by 1 May. The website https://betadecanen.nl/outreach/ contains the guidelines, as well as and history of awarded proposals.

Stéphanie van der Pas and Valentijn Karemakers new members fot The Young Academy
|
In 2024, The Young Academy will again welcome ten new members. They represent the full breadth of science and scholarship, and their research covers a wide variety of topics, ranging from needle-free injection to the philosophy of technology and natural protection from the sea.
In the field of mathematics, there are 2 new members: Stéphanie van der Pas (Amsterdam UMC)en Valentijn Karemaker (University Utrecht). They will be officially installed as members of The Young Academy on Tuesday 26 March 2024.

Evening of the Abel Prize 2024
|
On the work of mathematician Luis Caffarelli
Luis Caffarelli is a leading mathematician who conducts research on partial differential equations that can be used to describe a variety of phenomena, such as the flow of fluids or the growth of populations. He was honoured in 2023 with the Abel Prize - considered the Nobel Prize of mathematics - for his "pioneering contributions to the theory of regularity of non-linear partial differential equations". This evening, three mathematicians from Caffarelli's field will inform you about the possibilities and applications of this theory and Caffarelli's contributions to it.

Stieltjesprijs academic year 2022-2023
|
The Stieltjes prize 2022-2023 for the best thesis in mathematics in The Netherlands has been won by Lucas Slot (University of Tilburg and CWI, currently ETH Zürich), for his thesis entitled “Asymptotic Analysis of Semidefinite Bounds for Polynomial Optimization and Independent Sets in Geometric Hypergraphs”.
The jury consisted of Erik van den Ban (UU), Odo Diekmann (UU), Aernout van Enter (RUG), Frans Oort (UU), Marc Uetz (UT), Aad van der Vaart (TUD) and Kees Vuik (TUD, chair), with assistance from Marieke Kranenburg (UvA, secretary). A total of 76 dissertations were assessed. External advice was obtained at various stages of the assessment. After an initial selection, a shortlist of 8 dissertations was compiled.
The quality of the 8 dissertations on the shortlist was again very high. After the first round of discussion, 3 dissertations remained, all of them of impressive quality, great originality and extremely well written. After an extensive second round of discussion, the jury concluded that there were no clear distinguishing elements on which a winner could be identified. Ultimately, the jury decided to hold a voting round, from which the winner was chosen. The jury then nominated Lucas Slot (UvT) for the Stieltjesprijs 2022-2023.
The dissertation of Lucas Slot consists of three parts. The first two parts deal with the performance analysis of hierarchies of semidefinite approximations for polynomial optimization problems. These nonlinear nonconvex optimization problems are hard to analyze and are used in many applications. These Lasserre hierarchies provide upper bounds (Part 1) and lower bounds (Part 2) for the global optimum. For the upper bounds the thesis offers an essentially optimal analysis for polynomial optimization problems over convex bodies and general compact semi-algebraic sets and a tight analysis for special sets including the box, the simplex, the ball and general convex bodies with a nice boundary. These results represent the state-of-the-art. They show an explicit performance analysis with quadratic dependence in the degree, which gives a strong improvement on the best known results in literature. The third part of the thesis is devoted to bounding the size of simplex-avoiding sets in geometric hypergraphs via a recursive theta-number, extending in a very nice way ideas that are classical in the case of graphs.
The thesis is based on 7 papers most of them already published in high ranked journals. The jury noted that the thesis was written in only 3,5 years. The jury rated this as an excellent thesis which fully deserves the Stieltjesprijs.
