Hello music lovers,

Hope you're doing well! We've got some really great gigs coming up over the next couple of weeks. Here is just a small taster!

UPCOMING HIGHLIGHTS...

Belinda O'HooleyTomorrow night (Tuesday 6th Feb), we're excited to welcome back exceptionally gifted pianist, singer, songwriter, and composer BELINDA O’HOOLEY, probably best known as one half of the much-loved Yorkshire folk duo O’Hooley & Tidow alongside her wife Heidi Tidow; together described by The Guardian as ‘exceptional songwriters.’ The duo have been propelled into newfound fame for penning the theme tune to hit BBC1 drama ‘Gentleman Jack’, earning them global admiration, an acting role for Belinda on the iconic TV drama Happy Valley, and Radio 4 Woman’s Hour. Belinda is also known for her inventive, minimalist, sometimes flamboyant accompanying of folk luminaries including Rufus Wainwright, Nic Jones, Jackie Oates and the Mercury nominated Rachel Unthank and The Winterset. Highly recommended!

Beth PorterAnother show we're particularly looking forward to is a special double bill on Sunday (11th Feb) featuring an idiosyncratic blend of surreal folk & dissonant blues from ANDY SKELLAM whose music reflects darkly humorous & deeply affecting absurdities, who will be sharing the bill with top cello player BETH PORTER. Porter has a pure unaffected voice that delivers beautifully original, understated yet powerful songs. Imagine Joanna Newsome goes to Nashville and writes a song with Anne Briggs and David Byrne from Talking Heads. This promises to be a gorgeous night of music!

Arthur Coates & Kerran Cotterell Other upcoming highlights include old-time duo HILLS OF BELGIUM (7th Feb), the ever brilliant clarinetist, saxophonist, pianist and singer EWAN BLEACH with his 1920s and 30s jazz and blues (9th Feb), and the album launch for the astounding energetic folk duo ARTHUR COATES & KERRAN COTTERELL (16th Feb) whose sound is rooted in Quebecois traditional music fused with songs from North America & around the British Isles.

Idle WomenWe're also increasing our programme of weekend matinée shows - they're a really lovely way to spend a wintery afternoon! We have a special one coming up on Sat 10th Feb - IDLE WOMEN - a new musical, written and performed by THE BUSY LIZZIES theatre group. Based on the women working on canals during World War Two, it has themes that resonate today: purpose, friendship, gender, sexuality, and identity, with great tunes! It’s jazzy, it’s skiffely, its romantic, it’s tearjerking, it’s inspiring, it’s fun... Come see for yourself! Other upcoming matinée shows include a special double bill with talented singer-songwriters DAISY CHUTE + JAMES WALKER (Sat 17th Feb), as well as our popular monthly residencies REBET ASKER GREEK ROOTS SERIES (Sun 11th Feb) and our highly regarded OPEN MIC (Sun 18th Feb). While music lovers of all ages are always welcome at Green Note, our matinées are particularly family friendly!

Mermaid Cafe ClubSpeaking of residences, we also have another instalment of The MERMAID CAFÉ CLUB (Mon 12th Feb). India Parkman will be kicking off this first show in the new year, with heartbreaking storytelling inspired by music from the 50s and 60s. Followed by the Sunflower Thieves, a self-produced sisterhood, nurturing a unique sound through ethereal vocal harmonies and storytelling lyrics. This will be followed by a performance from a SECRET HEADLINER revealed only on the day of the show. This night is has quickly become a favourite to many - come discover why!

Gypsy Dreamers Also an early heads up that we have two very lovely shows on Valentine's Day (14th Feb) this year - love songs from the early Jazz era from the DEBORAH CAREW STRING TRIO in our main space, and jazz, chansons and cheeky Valentine's fun from THE GYPSY DREAMERS TRIO in our intimate Basement Bar. We recommend booking early as our Valentines shows always sell out!

Many more great shows coming up (far too many to mention here)... so make sure you keep an eye on the events page of our website.
