Long, lazy evenings ... That's what we love about August. Those lovely drawn-out dusks are perfect for spotting bats zipping about as they hunt for insects. This month celebrates International Bat Night, so be sure to spread your wings and go on the lookout for some fab fliers. If you'd prefer something less outdoorsy to fill your nights, why not grab a copy of our great new book Charlie – The dog who came in from the wild, check out our great summer reading picks, or browse the new H&H catalogue online for more great books? Just don't forget to take in a sunset or two ...
New this month!
Charlie – The dog who came in from the wild
HH4784 • Paperback • 17x22cm • £10.99 • 112 pages • 47 pictures
• ISBN: 978-1-845847-84-5 • UPC: 6-36847-04784-9
The true story of the bond that developed between author Lisa Tensin-Dolma, and Charlie – a traumatised, one-eyed, Romanian dog who lived the first 18 months of his life in the wild, never socialising with humans. Charting Charlie’s progress and setbacks, it explains how Lisa worked with Charlie to help him overcome his extreme fearfulness to become a happy, affectionate, fun-loving family dog. Charlie – The dog who came in from the wild is touching and heart-warming, and clearly demonstrates the transformative power of love and kindness.
Critical acclaim for Charlie:
Charlie will be available later this month. For more information, or to be alerted when the book is released, visit the Hubble & Hattie website.
International Bat Night
We're batty about bats!
Bats get a lot of bad press. Their sharp teeth, propensity to hunt at dusk and at night, and their connection with a certain Transylvanian Count have led people to believe that they are something to fear. Well, we're here to tell you that bats are beautiful, and what better time to get to know them than on International Bat Night?
Organised by Eurobats, International Bat Night was founded in 1997, with over 30 countries across Europe and beyond taking part, and conservation groups running events, presentations, exhibitions and bat walks on the last weekend of August each year.
The event encourages the general public to learn about the way bats live; what they need to survive, and the importance of conservation for this remarkable mammal.
To find out if there's a bat event going on near you, check out the Eurobats webpage

Sage and Austin hit the road!
Dogs and their wheels ...
We were delighted to receive these great pictures from Canada-based Hubble & Hattie and Veloce author, Norm Mort, of his dogs, Sage and Austin. As it turns out, the lovely pair are just as car-mad as their owner! Check out what Norm has to say about Sage's new wheels ...
Studebaker Lark VIII Deluxe Station Wagon
is a rolling work in progress, which means it's not finished yet. It's an all-original example, with less than 35,000 miles on it. I want to keep most of the original paint rather than do a full re-spray, and will try to remove some of those excess areas of grey primer the previous owner sprayed after doing some minor bodywork.
Sage is a car dog, and since Austin has claimed the 1966 Autobianchi van (see below) as his, the arrival of the Studebaker keeps the children – sorry, puppies – from squabbling."
Waggy tails all around for these car-loving hounds, then! If you'd like your dogs to be as happy in the car as Sage and Austin, check out Norm's book, Dogs on wheels – Travelling with your canine companion, for great tips and advice on getting the most out of travelling with your four-legged friend – whether for five minutes or five hours.
Dogs on wheels is available now over at the H&H website.
