Legendary Cypress Hill hip-hop DJ and producer takes us on a journey into the future sounds of dubstep, glitch and grimy electronics on his debut for Ultra Music.
***Featured guests include Public Enemy's Chuck D, Dizzee Rascal, Freddie Gibbs, Danny Brown, Belle Humble, Roc Marci, Killa P
You know DJ Muggs the hip-hop producer (platinum albums with Cypress Hill, House of Pain's smash "Jump Around"—plus a dozen stellar albums of collaborations in the Vs. series, as Soul Assassins and otherwise), the globetrotting hip-hop club DJ (spinning 100+ dates annually) and the experimental recording artist (2003 genre-defying album Dust). Take a breath and get ready for a new chapter in the Muggs story—and forget everything you thought you knew.
With Bass For Your Face (Ultra Music), the Los Angeles producer turns his considerable hard-won skills and discerning ear to dubstep, glitch, dub electronics in 12 original tracks featuring rising stars of hip-hop, a grime legend, a hip-hop god—but also an unknown Finnish singer discovered on SoundCloud. It's not a typical hip-hop album, or a dubstep collection for that matter. It's a 21st century hip-hop album built on futuristic dubstep production technique featuring rappers and vocalists operating on the leading edge of the underground. It's safe to say it could only exist in 2013.
TRACK HIGHLIGHTS: UK superstar rapper Dizzee Rascal and cohort Bambu guest on single "Snap Your Head Back." "I met Dizzee through my friend Bun B. We were on this thing called the Gumball Rally, a race from London to Instanbul. He said, ‘You should get with my boy Dizzee Rascal’, so he came to my LA Studio and we did the song."

Public Enemy's Chuck D rhymes on single and bonus track "Wikid." "I was trying to take the spirit, that raw PE energy and give it a futuristic twist. Chuck is one of my heroes man, I grew up on Chuck D, being educated by him and inspired by him, it's an honor to work with him. "
Young Gary, Indiana native Freddie Gibbs kicks into the full-length on the ominous "Trapp Assassin" with full dose of gangster reality. "Safe" featuring UK songstress Bella Humble will please big room club DJs with its raveworthy basslines and Humble's trippy, angelic vocals.
"Unknown" features Romy Harmony, an heretofore unknown singer from Finland. Found via a friend of Muggs on Soundcloud.com, "she basically burst into tears" when Muggs approached her about doing a track. Finding a singer like her online "makes me wonder how much undiscovered talent there was twenty years ago in some corner of the world," says Muggs.

It's far from a safe record, but Muggs wouldn't have it any other way.
A passionate devourer of new music and lover of classic underground sounds, Muggs has gone out of his way to challenge himself this time around. Touring the world for nearly 150 days a year, the vinyl-slinging DJ refuses to box himself into genres lest he get bored. He's as likely to drop an old Prodigy track at a dubstep festival gig ("the kids go nuts") as break up a club hip-hop night with Led Zeppelin rockers. But he also has his ears to ground. Muggs constantly searches for the next vibe and he found it in dubstep. "About six years ago, I started checking it out. It was super super underground and dark... I am always looking for that underground thing, that next thing, that form of inspiration."

Meanwhile, back in Los Angeles, Muggs saw a vibrant community emerging at the Low End Theory club night. With the likes of Flying Lotus, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, drum ‘n’ bass innovator Photek and Muggs himself gracing the DJ booth, the forward-thinking, avant-garde leaning event recalled the cross-pollination of the downtown Manhattan in the 1980s for the New York-bred DJ.

For Bass For Your Face, Muggs went back to the drawing board and completely reinvented his production style. There are multiple bass tones and drum sounds constructed from scratch (rather than James Brown kits or sample sets). Exploring a new process that includes the meticulous building of sounds was a welcome experience for the veteran producer. Don't misunderstand, Muggs hasn't fled hip-hop—he's made four hip-hop tracks on the day you're reading this. But he recognizes that electronic music as a genre has massive potential in contrast to a strictly underground sound.
Bass For Your Face is a return to the underground for DJ Muggs, who hopes to connect old school beat fanatics with the raw fundamentals of drum sounds and electronic basslines. "What I tried to do was make this kind of record that real hip hop heads that aren’t really into dubstep would like, and show them the similarities that I found in some of the early dubstep stuff. The stark beats, dark minimalistic shit reminded me of the early hip-hop stuff, the T La Rock stuff, the early Mantronix productions—just kicks, snares and 808s. When I'm hearing that, it's the same to me - it’s got the same spirit, that underground spirit."
Recording for roughly six months between tours, Muggs came away with nearly 40 tracks. Some bonus cuts will be on the free EPs he's dropping as a prelude to Bass for Your Face. Fashion brand Mishka dropped the free Soundclash Business EP in November featuring ultra-hip up-and-comers A$AP Rocky and Chuck Inglish of the Cool Kids. Together with the upcoming Soundboy Killa EP from DJ Muggs, we'll hear a rawer face of Muggs doing dubstep as a prelude to the Bass For Your Face long-player.
Only time will tell how hip-hop purists accept this new DJ MUGGS production. MUGGS says, “This is what has inspired me to go forward and want to make music at this point. This is what I feel like doing." To be an artist and inspire the next generation, there's only one rule in the world of DJ Muggs—There are no boundaries, keep on pushing.
