Joining Forces Tool Kit Now Available
Last summer, AACN joined with the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) to enhance the resources available to nurses working with veterans as part of the Joining Forces initiative, with a particular focus on nursing education. To that end, the Enhancing Veterans’ Care (EVC) Tool Kit has been developed and includes resources and exemplars that can assist faculty with the implementation of curriculum elements that will appropriately address the unique needs of veterans and their families. 2013-2014 Postdoctoral Nurse Fellowship Program
The Postdoctoral Nurse Fellowship Program is designed to provide nurses who have a research- focused doctorate the opportunity to broaden their scientific or research background, or to extend their potential for clinical research in nursing.

GNSA Launches Free Webinar Series
Pathways to Leadership for the Graduate-Prepared Nurse

Graduate nursing students are invited to join distinguished nurse leader Mary Wakefield, PhD, RN, FAAN, for an insightful conversation about the expanding roles for nurses with master's and doctoral level preparation. Dr. Wakefield, the highest ranking nurse in the federal government who heads the Health Resources and Services Administration, will discuss how nurses are transforming the future of healthcare in many arenas, including primary care, healthcare administration, research, policy, and education.
Dr. Wakefield will share her own personal story from bedside nurse to national leader and offer advice on how to advance your own pathway to leadership. Following the remarks, participants will have the chance to ask questions and explore topics of personal interest. Dr. Wakefield is presenting this free webcast to help launch the Graduate Nursing Student Academy (GNSA), a new national network of students in master’s and doctoral nursing programs established by AACN.

Apply Now for the 2013 Minority Nurse Faculty Scholarship
AACN, with support from the Johnson & Johnson Campaign for  Nursing’s Future, is currently offering a sixth round of scholarship funding to underrepresented minority nursing students who plan to work as nursing faculty after graduation. Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a doctoral nursing program or a clinically-focused master’s degree program. Five scholarships in the amount of $18,000 will be awarded.
Applications must be received by Wednesday, May 1, 2013.
Inaugural Winners of AACN's New Dissertation and Capstone Awards Announced at the Doctoral Conference
Last year, AACN created a new awards program to recognize outstanding dissertations and capstone projects completed by students in research- and practice-focused doctoral programs. With more than 60 applications received for these top honors awards were presented at AACN’s annual Doctoral Education Conference in January 2013.
The Excellence in Advancing Nursing Science Award for an outstanding dissertation from a student in a PhD in nursing or DNS program was presented to Dr. Oleg Zaslavsky, who graduated in 2012 with his PhD from the University of Washington. His dissertation chair was Dr. Barbara B. Cochrane (pictured below). For his Longitudinal Dynamics in Indicators of Frailty: Predictors and Long-Term Outcomes study, Dr. Zaslavsky used latent growth mixture modeling to examine trajectories of change in musculoskeletal and neuro-cognitive indicators of frailty in older women, using the large Women’s Health Initiative database.

Honorable mention went to Tiffany Moore, BSN–PhD student from the University of Nebraska Medical Center for her dissertation of Model of Allostatic Load and Complications of Prematurity.
The Excellence in Advancing Nursing Practice Award for an outstanding capstone project from a student in a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program was presented to Dr. Erin Harnett. Dr. Harnett graduated in 2011 with her DNP from New York University, and her capstone project advisor was Dr. Barbara Krainovich-Miller (pictured below). Dr. Harnett’s Integrating Preventive Dental Care in a Pediatric Oncology Center evidence-based practice project resulted in a significant policy change in practice at a major Cancer Center for a highly vulnerable pediatric oncology population. The Center admission protocol now requires that all pediatric oncology patients receive a comprehensive oral health assessment and exam on admission as well as receive fluoride varnish treatment and a dental referral if caries are detected prior to initiating their chemotherapy or other forms of cancer treatment.
Honorable mentions went to:
  • Vicky Grossman, MPH-DNP student from Duke University for her capstone on The Role of Health Promoters in Zinc Compliance in Guatemala.
  • Carrie Kairys, DNP student from Johns Hopkins University for her capstone on Improving Contraceptive Counseling by Instituting a Provider Reminder with Clinical Decision Support in the Electronic Health Record.

AACN member deans and their practice partners are encouraged to make plans now to attend the Implementing Successful Academic Practice Partnerships conference on April 18-19, 2013 in Chicago, IL. Discover the keys to maximizing your strategic affiliations to ensure that they are goal-driven, outcome-focused, and mutually beneficial. Participants will explore how to sustain commitment and cooperation among partnering organizations through interactive presentations highlighting successful collaborations, including a look at partnerships forming to support the new federally-funded Graduate Nursing Education demonstration. Both the academic and the practice partner must attend together as a pair. QSEN Faculty Development Workshop at NONPF
AACN is pleased to announce that registration is now underway for the April 10, 2013 Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Faculty Development Workshops in Pittsburgh, PA. As a pre-conference to the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Annual Meeting, the Pittsburgh QSEN Faculty Development Workshop will give nursing faculty and hospital educators the skills and resources needed to teach quality and safety competencies in master’s and doctoral level nursing courses. Graduate faculty and their practice partners are invited to apply.

Registration is free to the first 100 faculty who register for the workshop. Applications must be completed online. The application is available at http://www.aacn.nche.edu/qsen/workshop-application. Contact hours will be awarded to all attendees who complete the entire one-day QSEN pre-conference workshop. 
Please note that in order to attend the QSEN Workshop in Pittsburgh, accepted applicants also must attend the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) 39th Annual Meeting on April 11-14, 2013. If your participation in NONPF is not confirmed by April 1, 2013, you will not be permitted to attend the QSEN Graduate Faculty Development Workshop.  CCNE Seeks Applicants to  Serve as On-Site Evaluators
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) is seeking applications from both educators and practicing nurses to serve as volunteer evaluators on its nursing education program accreditation review teams. The next evaluator training program will be held on May 20-21, 2013, in Reston, Virginia. CCNE typically conducts on-site evaluations during the spring (February through April) and fall (September through November). An on-site evaluation of a nursing program (which could be located at a college or university anywhere in the country) typically occurs over a three-day period. CCNE's expectation is that evaluators commit to participating on at least one on-site evaluation per year, if asked. Please consider this information when submitting an application. The deadline for submitting application materials is March 15, 2013.

Innovations in Professional Nursing Education Awards 
This award recognizes the outstanding work of AACN member schools to re-envision traditional models for nursing education and lead programmatic change. Innovation awards, including a monetary prize of $1,000, will be given in four institutional categories: Small School; Academic Health Center (AHC); Private School without an AHC; and Public School without an AHC.

One of the highest honors a person can receive from AACN is the Sr. Bernadette Armiger Award, which recognizes a nursing leader who has made significant contributions to AACN and its goals, to nursing education, and to the advancement of the profession. The award honors Sr. Bernadette Armiger for her distinguished service to AACN and to recognize and encourage efforts toward the advancement of nursing education and practice. Sr. Bernadette served as AACN’s third president from 1972-1974. As AACN president, she was instrumental in forming an alliance between AACN and the ANA, as well as the Interorganization Committee for Implementation of Nursing’s Role in Health Care Delivery, which brought together the presidents and executive directors of AACN, ANA, and the NLN. To this day AACN enjoys the benefits of the relationships formed during her term.

ELNEC Announces New Training Program for APRNs in Palliative Care
Palliative Care is growing in the United States and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are expected to:
  • Respond to the complex needs of patients with serious and life-limiting illness and their families as outlined in the 2010 Institute of Medicine report on the Future of Nursing  
  • Meet the objectives of the 2010 Affordable Care Act which will increase healthcare access for all Americans
  • Provide quality palliative care across the lifespan and across clinical settings, as defined by the National Consensus Project for Quality Care Clinical Practice Guidelines 
This course is designed for APRNs, including nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists. Nursing faculty are encouraged to attend this training, as they will receive information/training regarding issues vital to all APRN students (i.e. overview of palliative care, advanced pain and symptom assessment/management, communication, leadership, finance/budget/business development).
Plan now to attend the April 4-5, 2013 course in Anaheim, CA or the November 5-6, 2013 course in Washington, DC. Further information about these two national training courses is located at www.aacn.nche.edu/ELNEC 
The ELNEC Project is a partnership between the AACN and the City of Hope in Duarte, CA.
CNC Offers Discount for the CNL Certification Exam 
CNC continues to develop new items for the multiple-choice CNL Certification Exam. As such, the exam that has been administered since April 2012 will be updated beginning with the April 2013 testing period. However, CNC must beta test the items to determine the minimum passing score in compliance with national certification standards. 
The beta test will occur April 1-6, 2013. All candidates who register for the beta test will receive a $50 discount off the registration fee. Candidates who pass the exam and meet all eligibility requirements will earn the CNL certification. Candidates who do not pass the exam during the beta test will receive a one-time $50 discount to retest. To take advantage of this cost-savings opportunity, you must complete the hard copy of the application posted online here and submit the application by Friday, March 1, 2013. Beta test participants will receive their exam results via email approximately four weeks after the testing period. Successful candidates will receive an email notification of passing only – a score and diagnostic score report will not be provided to the candidate. Unsuccessful candidates will receive an email notification of failing the exam along with the score and diagnostic score report.

CNC to Host CNL Certification Exam Chat Room 
CNC is hosting an online CNL Certification Exam chat room! Encourage CNL students and graduates to join the chat room of The CNL Community, AACN’s online discussion board, to participate in an exchange of information on March 25, 2013 from 1:00 - 2:30 pm (ET). This is a great opportunity for prospective CNLs to post questions to colleagues prior to the CNL Certification Exam. The session is intended for them to connect with CNL students, CNLs, and CNC staff. Participants simply type their questions and responses to post on the chat room; they will have an opportunity to discuss CNL Certification Exam preparation, ask CNC staff about the exam format, learn how CNLs prepared for the exam, and much, much more! A transcript of the discussion will be available and posted on The CNL Community after the session.

Million Hearts Educational Module is Ready for Students
  Million Hearts™ is a national initiative to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over five years. Million Hearts™ brings together communities, health systems, nonprofit organizations, federal agencies, and private-sector partners from across the country to fight heart disease and stroke. AACN is pleased to be a supporter of the Million Hearts campaign.  
Million Hearts has launched an educational module as part of the National Interprofessional Education and Practice Consortium to Advance Million Hearts. Several colleges across the country are participating by having their students complete the module, which takes approximately 4 hours. Health professions students who complete the Million Hearts educational module on the Web site (which is free), will become a Million Hearts Fellow. At the end of the module, there is a mechanism for students to enter data on the 10 people for whom they conducted Million Hearts screening and/or education, so there can be tracking on the number of people reached through this effort. This module is intended to help students learn about how they can impact population health through Million Hearts and assist DHHS in preventing 1 million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.
For those faculty who were not able to have a faculty representative attend the last webinar, there will be another informational webinar on how to use the 4-hour Million Hearts module with their students on February 21 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm (ET).

The newly enhanced 2013 – 2014 NursingCAS application is opening on April 15, 2013 and there are several new features that will make the application more flexible to fit the unique needs of different schools and program types.
