Election Day was a huge success ...

... for Columbus Community Bill of Rights!

from Sandy Bolzenius:
Here is a follow-up from Tuesday along with our outstanding successes.
Each and every one of you helped boost our petition signature count to a grand total of ... 937 on election day alone!
We got a better idea of which stations see the most voters. While the Board of Elections lists most of the places we were as high-traffic sites, its statistics cannot match your personal experiences.
Collectively, we educated over a thousand voters on the threat that fracking poses to our beautiful city and what we can do about it. Not all voters signed this time, but they now know about the issue.
We also updated people, many who have already signed during this campaign or earlier ones, about our work. It's neat seeing so many people announce with big grins, "I've already signed!
I'd say that these are some high-value accomplishments for just one day! Here is even better news: We have surged past the 7,000 signature mark!

Ohio Environmental Council published a press release
to clear erroneous statement about brines

Heather Taylor-Miesle, Executive Director of The Ohio Environmental Council, issued a press release on November 2nd, 2019. This is a first step to reverse the damage done by the erroneous statement, quoted by an OEC employee, in the October 23rd article in the Dispatch.  We can only assume that the oil & gas industry's front groups, such as Energy In Depth and the Ohio Oil And Gas Association, will use the statement in the November 2nd article to bolster their claims that frack brines are safe for the public and environment when disposed of on surfaces.

Grass roots activists are making arrangements to meet with OEC to discuss how we can further help them to ensure that accurate and new information is put out so that the public and, hopefully state legislators, will understand it.

We cannot allow Ohio to continue spreading conventional oil & gas brines on roads, but even more critical, we cannot allow products that contain these brines to be sold in stores for general public consumption from their homes.

Click HERE to read the press release on the OEC website.
The release can also be read as a Dispatch letter-to-the-editor HERE.  It was hoped that a corrective article would be published since the original information was much more visible in an article, not a letter.

Defend the Defenders

L’eau Est La Vie, based in Louisiana, has an amazing history of defending local waterways, but is now under threat after peacefully protesting the construction of a new pipeline. Last year, with permission from the land owners, the group set up camp on a patch of land in the path of the pipeline. Private security and local police arrested the water protectors. These protectors now face felony charges under Louisiana’s new ‘critical infrastructure’ law.

New Report Reveals Oil Waste in California Aquifers

[Excerpt:]
“The most recent study identified two pathways for pollution migrating to groundwater. First, contaminants dumped by the oil industry into unlined wastewater pits have trickled down through the soil into groundwater below. Second, researchers found “direct evidence” of waste fluids injected deep underground migrating outward from oil-industry disposal wells into surrounding aquifers,” he said.

He said the findings “contradict repeated assurances” from state regulators and the oil industry that oil and gas fluids would remain in place and not migrate to nearby groundwater sources.“

In an earlier study, samples from multiple water wells were found to contain high levels of radium, a radioactive element found in oil industry wastewater. Eighteen percent of water wells sampled near the Fruitvale, Lost Hills and South Belridge oilfields contained unsafe levels of the chemical,” the groups revealed.

Immediate Moratorium on Fracking in England
Because of Tremor Risk

[Excerpt:]
“Whilst acknowledging the huge potential of UK shale gas to provide a bridge to a zero carbon future, I’ve also always been clear that shale gas exploration in the UK must be carried out safely. In the UK, we have been led by the best available scientific evidence, and closely regulated by the Oil & Gas Authority, one of the best regulators in the world.

“After reviewing the OGA’s report into recent seismic activity at Preston New Road, it is clear that we cannot rule out future unacceptable impacts on the local community.

“For this reason, I have concluded that we should put a moratorium on fracking in England with immediate effect.”
