BREAKING NEWS

New WPCC Autism Information Pack now Available
The WPCC first developed its Autism Information Pack in 2013 in an effort to make it easier for families of autistic children and young people to connect to relevant information and support. After some years, the pack we had developed began to become obsolete as services and information changed over time, so the WPCC set about re-writing this pack. After several years’ hard work by a small team of dedicated volunteer parent carers, we are delighted to announce that the new WPCC Autism Information Pack is now finished and available to view.

The original Autism Information Pack was 72 pages long. Replicating the layout of our original pack and breaking information down into age related sections, our new pack comes in at 212 pages of information! Due to funding, we had to make the decision to publish this new pack in a digital format. Additionally, because both local and national services change so frequently and need updating regularly, a digital format is easier to do this.

To see the new WPCC Autism Information Pack, please click: Autism Pack.

New Support for Families, Children and Young People in Wiltshire
Family hubs are launching in Wiltshire this April, meaning that families, children and young people will be able to access support both face to face and online under the new model from 2nd April.

The new model will give greater local community support and guidance for families and young people aged from 0 to 19, extending to 25 years for those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Wiltshire Council has awarded the contract to Spurgeons to provide new family hubs in communities throughout the county.
There will be three main hubs operating at Five Rivers in Salisbury, Monkton Park in Chippenham and County Hall in Trowbridge,. Alongside this, there will be regular family hub support available at advertised times at "navigator locations" in community venues around the county, including libraries and leisure centres.

There will also be a digital platform that can be accessed on phones, tablets or computers, offering information, support, and courses to give children, young people and families the help and guidance they need to thrive.

Each hub will have its own team of navigators. They will have a visible presence in the community to ensure they are on hand to offer help to families that need it, and to signpost and create links to other agencies, such as local schools and early years providers.

There will be an online webinar on 29th April at 6pm about family hubs so people can ask questions and find out more about the face to face and online offer. People can join the webinar using this link.

Non-Speaking Autistic Children’s and Adolescent’s Mental Health Survey
Klaudia Niemiec is a researcher from the University of York and would like to invite you to participate in a research project that explores 'How does attending social groups impact non-speaking autistic children's and adolescents' mental wellbeing?'

Please find in attachments a flyer (Participant Recruitment Leaflet.jpg) that includes information about the study, the eligibility criteria and a link/QR code for the survey.

Each parent's unique insights and perspectives on non-speaking autism are incredibly valuable and could greatly enrich research findings.

Aimee is also working on a research study that explores the mental wellbeing of non-speaking autistic children, while also assessing the support available to them. They are interested in hearing the experiences of parents/caregivers of children aged 4-19 years.
The study involves taking part in a 10-minute, online questionnaire about wellbeing priorities and gaps and strengths of current support.  All responses are anonymous and there is no obligation to answer every question.

Please see flyer in attachments (Copy of Participants Needed) for QR code to complete the survey.

New Specialist In-Patient Mental Health Provision for South West
Planning permission has been granted for a new £20m unit in Bristol providing specialist mental health care for people with a learning disability and autistic people across the south west.

The new 10-bedded unit will be built on the Blackberry Hill site and run by Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP). It is being designed specifically to care for individuals across the south west with a learning disability or autistic people who would benefit from specialist mental health treatment in a hospital, when needs cannot be met in a mainstream mental health hospital or at home.

The Unit will help to bring an end to long-distance placements for patients, making life better both for individuals who need hospital treatment, and for their families, friends, and carers.

Construction work is due to start in May this year, with the Unit anticipated to open in the summer of 2025.
