Keynote presentation: Internet of Things for Manufacturing

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical objects or “things” embedded with electronicssoftwaresensors, and connectivity to enable objects to collect and exchange data. The Internet of Things allows objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration between the physical world and computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit.

How does this apply to me in my manufacturing facility? Over the years there has been an increasing need for more information to be extracted from manufacturing control systems; and to have this information distributed to more people within an organization in order to make business decisions. This coupled with ever-changing computer operating systems and security concerns had put a strain on the traditional infrastructure design of control systems.
New designs leveraging modern technologies are allowing for more visualization into the systems allowing for real time data to be viewed remotely on mobile devices. The new designs also greatly reduce the maintenance involved day to day as well as making future upgrades seamless.
This discussion will review the traditional vs modern designs highlighting the technologies used and the benefits realized. Realizing these benefits today has become known as the internet of Things.

Presenters: James Taylor and David Jirku.  James is a 10 year veteran of the automation sector who works for Rockwell Automation.  David has been active in the field of networks and cybersecurity for the past 17 years with Cisco Systems.

Software Solutions for Better Safety, Reliability, Efficiency and Sustainability

Description:  Plant processes are increasingly complex and difficult to manage. Add in pressures arising from global economic conditions, a complicated regulatory environment and supply chain variability and you have a perfect storm where plants must do more with less and make faster, smarter decisions just to remain competitive.  Successfully resolving these questions through technology that works with existing assets and systems will transform any business and generate significant value through improved safety, reliability, efficiency and sustainability.

Presenter:  Ron Poirier - Ron has been with Honeywell for over 20 years where he has held numerous roles including Technical Sales, Sales Management, Business Manager, and is currently a Channel Manager for Honeywell Advanced Solutions.  Ron has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ottawa University.

11 a.m.
More than just Sci-Fi

Description: The new laser based analysis technology is changing the landscape across all industries. From ensuring your inhaler works to controlling the burner in your furnace, laser technology is sequentially knocking out standards in technology for a more accurate, easier to apply and less maintenance prone solution. We will discuss the evolution of technology, current capabilities and future aspirations of laser with application examples in Petrochemical, Natural Gas, Packaging, Marine/CEMS and Combustion processes.

Presenter: Lewis VanKamp, Technical Analytical Specialist, Lakeside Process Controls

1 p.m.
Topic:  Turbogen To Profits!

Description:  With the ever evolving landscape of government programs and incentives, ArcelorMittal Dofasco wanted to take advantage of a government sponsored program for energy conservation and savings. With the redeployment of a used/rebuilt 50+ year old Turbogenerator, they were able to save the company millions of dollars in annual electricity costs, while saving the environment. The project maximized the use of existing plant infrastructure, minimized capital costs and used a state-of-the art DeltaV control system, with Charms, to pull it all together.

Call for Volunteers

ISA Hamilton is looking for a few additional volunteers to help us run our programs.   In the past couple years, we had a few of our long-time exec members step back when they retired, so we are looking for some fresh blood.  Like what we do as a section? Please consider offering a few hours of your time each month to help us with our expo, golf tournament, student programs, and dinner meetings.

Running our local ISA section does not take a lot of work, but it helps if we can spread it amongst a few more volunteers. Interested?  Please contact our section president Brent Killins at (905)-812-2247 or president@isahamilton.com
