Introduction: After a very successful cohorts of Paddlesports Instructors over recent years, we are looking to build the 2026 cohort. Within Warspite and Ajax we are targeting competent paddlers who are 16 years or older and want to lead others.
Course outline: The British Canoeing Paddlesports Instructor is a Nationally Recognised Award aimed at providing a first instructing qualification.
It is aimed supporting the instructor with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities to support learning and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding.
The process of completing the qualification aims to help prepare candidates for their first paddlesport instructing role; ‘primed and ready’.
Pre Requesites:
-
You must be 14 but We will be targeting over 16 years as this has a substantial leadership element.
-
You should be confident in your ability to paddle on flat water
-
You should be confident in your ability to do rescues and have done either the Paddlesports Safety & Rescue Course or the Foundation Safety & Rescue Course.
-
Please do take a look at the resources on the link below.
Location: The Course will run at Warspite Ajax Scout Boating Centre, Thames Ditton. It is non residential
Method of delivery:
The courses will be run by Dave Foley & Shahid Wahab.
Both are independent course tutors. They have delivered both Paddlesports Safety, Paddlesports Instructor and Flatwater Freestyle (Shahid) qualifications for Warspite & Ajax previously.
Components:
There are two key elements to the qualification: The Paddlesports Safety & Rescue and then the actual course which includes assessment.
You do not have to do the Paddlesports Safety and Rescue with us to do the Paddlesports Instructor, but most will.
Places & dates:
These will take place at Ajax and Warspite Sea Scouts, on the Thames, at Thames Dirron
These are limited and we will have more on the Paddlesports safety than we can take to instructor so we will review the list at the start of March and share the pathways by the end of that month. We cannot guarantee anyone will be part of the cadre but we will prioritise those who apply.
Paddlesports Safety and Rescue - 1 day
We have two opportunities for this planned. You will only need to do one of these:
Saturday: 16th May
Saturday: 30th May
Paddlespiorts Instructor - 2 days - you will need to do both days. Saturday 11th/12th July
Costs:
Warspite and Ajax provide the space and any boats needed as part of our support for wider Scouting. We then split the tuition and any extra costs. These are typically
-
£60 for the Safety Course. (Commercially these are about £100)
-
£120 for the course. (Commercially these are circa £200 upwards)
For the Paddlesport Instructor there are then Paddle UK / British Canoeing costs.
-
£46.80 British Canoeing fee
-
If the cost is a barrier, please get in contact.
Feedback on this course.
D: Leader “I thought that the course was excellent. Well organised with the right amount of instruction and actual practical hands on activities. There was a good energy from the instructors which helped. Definitely have enough confidence to take groups out and know that you had a few games/ideas by the end of the session.
F: Explorer “ The instructors were both amazing and made the course inviting and enjoyable to take part in. As well as teaching us the necessities, they provided us with extra knowledge that is very useful.”
A: Leader “Overall the course was really enjoyable and gave an excellent opportunity to learn games and techniques to engage small groups of people new to paddlesports, along with cover the basics of planning a session.
The instructors were highly engaging and supportive and gave excellent hints and tips.”
