Wednesday 3 June

Next Wednesday our speaker is Nicholas Posner who will be presenting his talk, 40 Years of Celebrity Portraiture. Here is what Nicholas has to say about his talk:

How do you become a celebrity portrait photographer? Well for me it happened almost by accident and it has run alongside my career in medicine, including 25 years as a GP. This talk is the rollercoaster story of my life in photography, from being schoolboy photographer in my native northeast, to the heart of political intrigue at Westminster and a smattering of sports and TV stars along the way. From a heart-stopping smile from Kylie to a game of snooker with the Home Secretary, there are stories of chance meetings, grand offices and humble homes. You hear an awful lot in the press about these people. So is it all true? I can assure you it is.
Here are a couple of images from the talk:

I cannot find a website for Nicholas, but this link will take you to a section of the National Portrait Gallery website in which he features - https://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/person/mp62899/nicholas-posner

Making Nature Work
Clink Clink (our neighbours in Unit 14) and the Bristol Zoo Project have launched the “Make Nature Work” project at Montpelier Central. This involves various things including installing wildlife trail cameras and upgrading all the planting around the estate to make it more nature friendly and involves all the tenants in Montpelier Central.

To kick things off, in June the project will begin the first round of adding new plants to the site and installing bird and insect boxes. We have received the following request from Clink Clink: To get things going, we hoped you would nominate one person from your organisation who can be our lead point of contact for the volunteering days. All we’ll need them to do is gauge the availability/interest of the team and share it back with us. We’ll add them to a WhatsApp group and then send (light) comms to organise the first volunteering day for a time that suits the majority of those who’d like to join us on planting/installing!

This is where you come in - if you would like to be the BPS point of contact and would like to get involved in the project, please email me (pete@bristolphoto.org.uk) with your mobile phone number and I will pass it on.

Amateur Photographer of the Year 2026

The 2026 APOY is now under way, with the first round already completed. Round 2 - Black & White, is now open for entries.

Last year’s winners, Plymouth, had 15 members score points by having more shortlisted images, rather than finishing in the top 10 in each competition. Against this BPS had only 5 photographers shortlisted across the various rounds and finished 9th – with the talent within BPS we should finish way higher up the rankings.  But to do so, requires members to enter! So, lets get behind this and give this a real go.
Here is the timetable for the rest of the competition:
To enter, just visit: www.amateurphotographer.com/apoy and quote the FREE entry code APOY77410062 Just remember to select Bristol PS when you register your first entry.

So, now you've been given all the entry details and you've got the talent and espescially as it'll cost you nowt - you have no excuse not to enter!

Annual PDI Competition
The results from this year's Annual Projected Image Competition are now in. The evening proved to be a bit of a masterclass in time management, with our judge, Eddy Lane, managing to pass comment on all 153 submitted images and still finish ahead of time - just goes to show what can be done when the judge doesn't waste time describing to the audience what they can already see, instead restricting his/her comments to critique - well done Eddy.

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
