Subject: The Three Dimensions of Strategic Energy Management
Strategic Energy ManagementThe "three dimensions of strategic energy management" is a presentation about how organizations can strategically manage energy costs and consumption to benefit the organization and (at the same time) create a more sustainable environment. Many people and organizations have been lulled into a sense of futility by the many years of regulated and monopolized energy provision on many North American markets. Some people and organizations manage only one dimension of their energy portfolio and are therefore repeatedly disappointed with results. The reason they are disappointed is the other two dimensions are affected in a manners that completely offsets the proposed benefit of their work. This is analogous to buying the cheapest gas for your car, while not keeping the engine tuned or driving heavy footed and using excessive braking.
Speaker: John Vinken  -  Energy Systems Engineering
Currently a Manager in the Redevelopment Department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, John is responsible for a vast array of projects including building 18 state of the art Operating Suites, a new Diagnostic Imaging Department and all projects at the ambulatory care site on king Street east.
Formerly the Director of facilities, bio-medical engineering and security at the Grand River Hospital, Kitchener, ON, he managed 1.2-million square feet of healthcare facilities over nine campuses, an operating budget of $10-million, and construction worth $80-million. His focus on management reduced the annual budget by $1.7-million. He renegotiated leases, renegotiated electricity and gas supplies and gained evaporation rebates from the City of Kitchener related to cooling towers and heat recovery boilers. He improved operational efficiency with a computerized maintenance management system.
