2. Popkomm 2010 - "Austria sounds great"

Austrian acts at the Popkomm Showcase Festival

Ogris Debris  - 09.09.2010, Eckstück

Ogris Debris, the Viennese electronic duo, is conquering the dance floors of international clubs with their somewhat unconventional, but very distinctive and fresh mix of techno and house music. Even though they have not produced an album yet, the two have already been on tour in Japan, have had their hit "Mitzekatze" played by BBC DJ Gilles Peterson and the popular Austrian radio station FM4 on heavy rotation and have the electronic music pioneer Peter Kruder as one of their first fans. They were nominated for the Austrian music award, the Amadeus Award, in the category Electronic/Dance, and according to these modest musicians, the trophy should have already been standing in their villa for a long time, next to their various other prizes, but there was just not enough space.

Tanzbaby - 08.09.2010 La Vie En Rose, Airport Tempelhof / Eckstück

Tanz Baby! are David & Mu, the "Great Pretenders" of Vienna's music scene.
Using instruments such as a 1970s electronic organ, with its typical groove patterns, and a 1980s vintage drum, Tanz Baby! create a unique atmosphere of otherworldly artificial retro pop.

Trouble Over Tokyo - 08.09.2010 Eckstück / 09.09.2010 SchwuZ Club (Karrera Klub Night)

The British-born Christopher Taylor, a.k.a. Trouble Over Tokyo, brought attention to himself in spring 2007, as a support artist for the local indie-pop band Garish. The question is, why would he choose the Alpine republic as a playground for his indie-soul-electro-pop music? By chance, a visitor from the Styrian city Graz met the English musician in a London pub a few years ago and invited him to play a few concerts in Styria. The rest is history and Trouble Over Tokyo is here to stay.

Ginga

The fact that Ginga is a band with big potential is something that has already been known in Austria for quite some time, but was not fully recognized. After their brilliant and outstanding performance at the Popfest in Vienna this year, there was no question that Ginga is probably the most promising band of the local pop scene. With their debut album "They Should Have Told Us", the four-member band first called attention to themselves in 2008. Songs like "Cinnamon" and "Fashion" were played at Austria's radio station FM4 in permanent rotation. Especially beyond Austrian borders, fans were enthusiastic about these wonderful pop songs.

Bilderbuch

Bilderbuch´s first release already caused quite a stir - the debut "Nelken & Schillinge" is full of surreal lyrics, playful monologues, great stories full of absurd metaphors and exciting Rock and Roll. The singles "Calypso" and "Kopf Ab" as well as the corresponding videos enjoyed insistent demand in the radio, on TV and the web - both titles even topped the charts of Austrian video channel GoTV for several weeks. All this and last but not least the phenomenal live qualities of the band led to their nomination for the "FM4 Award" at the Amadeus Austrian Music Awards. Eventually word of mouth cut across the borders - at the opening of Pop Up Leipzig, Motor Club (Berlin) and numerous club shows the band attracted a great deal of attention in Germany.
A remix EP transfering Bilderbuch to the dance floor will be released in September: hip producer Dirty Disco Youth, Berlin newcomers I Heart Sharks, Austrian House heroes AG Trio, The Integrals and many others cut up and rearranged "Nelken & Schillinge". In the meantime, the band once again retreated to the studio to record album #2 - scheduled to be released in February 2011.

3.  Moving Sounds New York

The Austrian Cultural Forum New York, the Argento New Music Project, mica - music austria, and the Czech Center New York present MOVING SOUNDS - a festival devoted to sound and its roles in contemporary music. (1-5 September, 2010)
Moving Sounds is a 5-day festival of music, visual media and aesthetic dialogue, produced jointly by the Austrian Cultural Forum, the music information center austria (mica), and the Argento New Music Project. The festival creates a forum for dialogue about sound. What is the relationship between sound and music? Can new theories of sound transform traditional ideas of “popular” and “classical” music? Through concerts, symposia, and social environments, the festival explores sound and its musical and sociological implications.
All events take place at The Austrian Cultural Forum New York, 11 East 52nd Street, New York, NY 10022, Czech Center NY, 321 East, 73rd Street, NY 10021 and Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street, NY 10012-1408.

Austrian artists presented at the festival moving sounds New York:
Christian Fennesz

Serenity and euphoria—Christian Fennesz is Austria’s claim to fame in matters of advanced electronic music. His solo works cause a sensation internationally; his collaborations with Mike Patton or Ryuichi Sakamoto are the topic of much discussion. So this is the attempt at a portrait of him. more

Georg Friedrich Haas

The Utopia of Sound in a Disenchanted World:
The Compositions of Georg Friedrich Haas
Diffuse masses of sounds cascade into the depths. The descending motion is perpetually repeated, persistently spiraling downward, then upward again – but only seemingly, for the oscillating play of shifting accents and volume generates the illusion of an endless expansion of the tonal space. The deceptive game finally exposes itself when the deceleration of sequences reveals the inner pattern. A brilliant tonal space unfurls where well tempered sounds meet rarified overtone chords.
