What if the most honest and essential parts of yourself were laid out in front of you as a dark terrain only you could traverse?
Existential, yes, but it’s a question that, Devin Coogan, otherwise known as CHILD, continually tries to answer with his craft – a hypnotic blend of alternative, indie rock, and hip-hop informally known as experimental pop. He is the consummate artist – a musical explorer – perpetually looking for undiscovered sonic territory.
With the release of his sophomore single, “Nothing to Say,” CHILD manages to say a lot – particularly about his immeasurable talent and refreshingly distinctive sound.
“Nothing to Say” and its accompanying lyric video officially drop September 18, 2020.
“Overwhelmed by the dark realities of exploitation, along with our Western-world veneer of ‘entertainment,' we crafted 'Nothing To Say’ as the antithesis to a fraudulent culture,” explains CHILD.
“My co-producer, Bala Mandala, took the production beyond imagination. Then together, we crafted a bright & hope-filled ending—to serve as my reminder: I am meant for more. We, as a people, in this life are meant for more."
Born and raised in New England and currently based in Raleigh, NC, CHILD encapsulates what often makes alternative pop music so remarkable – familiar melodies and hooks, as well as a haunting lyrical depth.
CHILD is one of the first artists to sign with AESTHETYK, founded by music industry veteran, Matt Ingle. Ingle’s penchant for unearthing innovative and inspiring artists is something he has enthusiastically carried on for over 20 years. He created AESTHETYK as a way to offer emerging songwriters and musicians an opportunity for incubation, helping them cultivate a signature and meaningful sound, as well as brand and ethic for a mass audience.
“Nothing to Say” is CHILD’s follow-up to his debut single, “The Encounter,” released earlier this year. The track amassed 150,000 Spotify streams in its first month.
“Ultimately, the purpose of ‘Nothing to Say’ is to draw the listener towards a place of searching and discovering, even finding stability and sanity in difficult situations,” shares CHILD.
“Lyrically, it’s written from a millennial’s perspective: on a micro level, the artist is overcoming a life obstacle that has left him powerless to change the opposing side’s views of him. On a larger scale, it is related to the common skepticisms and suspicions of young adults towards the world—specifically Hollywood, government, modern and progressive pop culture—even as deep-seated as religion, conspiracies, mysticism, and the Illuminati.”
