2023 Ethics Olympiads

Dear Colleagues,

2023 is shaping up to be the best year ever for the Ethics Olympiad.

The third international Middle School Ethics Olympiad was held in February with St Andrew's Anglican School Qld taking the Gold Medal, Diocesan School for Girls NZ was awarded the Silver Medal and Mount Carmel College Tasmania was awarded the Bronze medal. This was the first time a Queensland school has won an International Olympiad. Congrats to all 40 qualifying schools that participated.

Successful Junior and Senior High School training days were run in March. Over 300 Senior students and coaches participated in a full day of training in mid-March while over 200 Junior students and coaches participated in two Junior School training days in late March.

In April we ran the first ever International Tertiary Ethics Olympiad between US and Australian Universities. Australian National University was awarded the Gold medal and Tufts University US the Silver Medal at this inaugural event.

May marked the start of over twenty Senior Ethics Olympiads with over 330 teams registered to participate. These events will culminate in a Senior High School final with the Gold and Silver medal winning teams coming together in July.

Congratulations to those 100 students that entered the case writing competition this year. 2023 marked the first year when we included cases written by students from the 2022 competition. The 2023 Ethics Centre Award for the best case went to Edison Zhoo from St Kentigern's College NZ, Paying up for History. Other prize winners are listed below. Congratulations to all the students that participated. These cases will be made available to Member Schools.

We have also welcomed over twenty schools as new members of the Ethics Olympiad over the last six months. (See list below)

We have enjoyed the involvement of schools in India over the past twelve months. These schools, together with a growing number of schools in Singapore and Hong Kong have provided our annual events with an important international dimension.

2023 is shaping up to be our most exciting year to date with a full calendar of events already mapped out.

Let the games begin!
