United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dear ,
On Sunday 1 September 2013, the Australian Civil Society Parallel Report Group Delegation (Civil Society Delegation) met in Geneva to finalise preparations for its formal statement to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Civil Society Delegation is made up of representatives from Disabled Peoples Organisations (DPOs), disability advocacy and human rights organisations.
Delegates met with Victoria Lee from the International Disability Alliance (IDA). The IDA is a network of international and regional DPOs that aims to promote the effective and full implementation of the UN Convention (CRPD) worldwide.  The IDA is able to assist the Australian Civil Society Delegation with information on how to make effective representation to the UN committee.

Delegates also met with the Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes, and Helen Potts of the Australian Human Rights Commission. The Australian Human Rights Commission will also be providing a report to the UN Committee. The Commission has the opportunity to comment on Australia's compliance with the Convention. Mr Innes has indicated to delegates that he will be available to discuss any matters during the UN committee process.

The meeting was also attended by the photographer, Belinda Mason who has produced a photographic essay Unfinished Business, about disability in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The Australian Ambassador is hosting an exhibition on behalf of First Peoples Disability Network and this  will open on Monday 2 September. All Australian delegates have been invited to attend.

The delegation reviewed the final draft of its opening statement to the UN committee. Delegates have a brief 10 minutes to provide an introductory statement to the UN committee in the opening session of Monday 2 September. The next daily report will include details of this statement.

The Australian delegation also discussed running its own meeting with members of the UN committee on Tuesday third September. At this event delegates will present Australia's NGO report in more detail. UN Committee members will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the issues as they relate to Australia at greater length.
